Man, he's so humble about it all. I listen and get inspired by this album about once a month, and it means the world to me. And here he is just talking about it like it's something he could knock out between a bowl of cornflakes and some coffee. That's the way of a musical craftsman and a consummate beatmaking professional.
I met him 15 years ago at a random questlove party.. told him my favorite song was africa face the sun and he threw his hand and brushed it off like it was nothing special he did
...Madlib should host whatever the equivalent of Actors Studio is in music and share all his wealth of knowledge and music curating as he talks with other giants of music, production, and beats. I know that'd be his nightmare tho lol, love seeing my guy come out and talk a hit here and there!
Oh man, I just recently copped this record by Madlib like maybe 2 months ago and I can't believe it's 20 yrs since it was released. This album is just as timeless as the Blue Note records it sheds light on, which probably just goes to show that love is that arch over time that connects like-minded souls. The levels of funky jazz on Slim's Return is just jaw-dropping, and laced with the beat & scratching is otherworldly sublime. I could listen to this whole masterclass record on repeat.
I can't believe it's been 20 years since this classic of an album dropped. This was the first Madlib album I purchased. I remember buying at a Barnes and Nobles. I hope he drops a second "Shades of Blue" album soon, because he's mentioned about putting out a second Blue Note jazz album, but has yet to put it out. Much respect to Madlib as always.
Love this record, scrambled years ago to own one, and now I can't go into a shop without seeing various release versions of it. It's been 20 years though. WE NEED A VOL. 2 FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!!
maaaan, I dunno if I can trust madlib with the amount of projects he’s promised within a year that never come out, but I’m praying for this one. wish you’d asked him abt tracks on the blue note EP, specifically that young warrior track by bobbi humphrey that never released unlike the original distant land. fun interview tho, great anniversary
BEEN DOWN SINCE THE BAGGY LOW BUDGET STEEZ GEAR BRUTHA. VERY HAPPY TO SEE YOU GET YOURS...PERC SAID IT BEST, HARD WORK PAYS!!!!!! STAY ON TILT MADLIB, AND STAY HUNGRY, TRUE WORK ETHIC!!!!
MY MAN.... I'LL ALWAYS KNOW YOU FOR STONES THROW AND ANYTHING ON THE LOW AROUND OR AFTER THAT ERA.... SALUTE BRUTHA... AND THE VINYL WAYS A TON....CDP FOREVER.
If he really does do another Blue Note revisited, he has to go full blown Yesterday’s New Quintet on it, preferably approached like a Joe McDuphrey project.
@@paisleyblvd.8465 When you said "up and comer" I assumed it wouldn't be artists who've been on the scene for over a decade. Majority of those artist you listed have been around closer to 20 years. If you had said just other hip hop artists who mess with the jazz genre as well then yes they fit into that category. But I don't consider someone who's been at their careers for 10-20 years up and comers. That's just me.
20 years sounds like a good time to put out another Madlib project on Blue Note

I got this album from Blue Note loving Madlib but having never heard it. It's fantastic. What a work.

Gratitude.
Ps The first 2 Madlib projects I got blessed with were Blue Note and Madvillainy

don't blame him blame the outdated copyright laws that treat sampling like it's cocaine distribution
@@tapedlockz420 Well Shades of Blue was commissioned by the label, wasn't it? So it would've already been cleared before he started making it
@@-47- yeah obviously, the other person mentioned all the other projects that have yet to release which was what i was talking about
@@tapedlockz420 And I was talking about the alleged second Shades of Blue album, since that was the album he was worried would never get released
Sophomore Madvillain CONFIRMED and in the works.
Madlibs one of the illest and realest
Super dope interview. Two legends.
Thank you Madlib
Que entrevista maravilhosa! Tenho em vinil esse disco! Madlib The Legend!🐐

Otis is an incredible talent.

6:45 I think this was one of the Tracks from Stalley's Album(The Autobiography).
Madlib invasion!!!
M-M-M-M-M-M-MADLIB INVAZION!

Hell no, another JoeMcDuphrey album would be better than him incorporating Yesterdays Universe vibes into another Blue Note remix album.
fav artist ever but take any release he promises with a grain of salt
Yea hes promised so many projects that have never seen the light of day
true haha
He confirmed sophomore Madvillain is being finished and will be released.
@@murakawa-san2279 lol
I thought he was wearing a Steve Jobs turtleneck at first lol
Loop Digga 😎
He said Donald Byrd and who in the beginning?
*i didn't know the Donald Byrd "Distant Land" joint before..*
Mizell bros. They produced Donald Byrd
So are you happier with Universal’s current ownership or EMI’s former ownership of Blue Note? Peace.
PATIENTLY AWATING SOPHOMORE MADVILLAIN ALBUM.
NO DISRESPECT,BUT SHADES OF BLUE ISN'T EVEN ONE OF HIS BEST. HIS DISCOGRAPHY SPEAKS VOLUMES TO ME,AND THERE IS TOO MUCH BETTER IN THAT CATALOG!!!!!!
my favorite are Madlib mind fusion mixes
Ehhhhh give an up and comer the opportunity to crank out a fresh Bluenote album, bro is washed sonically…the soul lazy loop stuff is not interesting.
4:23
Name an up and comer you're aware of who is as tapped into jazz music as madlib though. I'm not aware of any personally.
@@docbizzlerBlack Milk, Karriem Riggins, Tuamie, Jazzanova, Kruder & Dorfmeister, KanKick, DJ Spinna…I can keep listing
