I am Retired US ARMY with 25 years Active service and I was an Instructor for 6 years on the M1A1 Tank.. You Video class tutorial was to the point, short and to the detail! Love it..I have learned something from you Sir!! I am working on a Giant P-51 now and I will Fiberglassing my project, Thank You!
It has been about 150 years since I have applied cloth and resin to a model. This was a good reminder of how it goes. Thanks for taking the time to video. It will help a lot of people.
Greg sounds alot like Johnny Cash! Great video my friend! Thank you for eliminating all the guesswork. Makes on feel more confident applying fiberglass!
I was curious about the statement (around 8:43) that too much hardener would prevent set up. I would have thought too much hardener would cause set up to happen too quickly. It did for me using Bondo body putty. I used too much hardener and it set up in the container while I was still stirring it...lol Thanks for taking the time to post your informative video.
So incredibly informative! Even you mixing the resin being "rudimentary"... not to me, I'm a beginner, haha! And those periodic checklists are priceless. Thank you so much, I'm now a better man bc of you!
I build duck hunting layout boats and after watching this video, I realize that I have been using too much hardner. This is a great video, I don't know how anyone could dislike it. Thanks.
Thanks so much for a fantastic video. I am excited to work with fiberglass now........THANKS TO YOU!!!!! TAKE CARE PAL. PS My name is Mike, 64 yr old USA competition full size glider pilot and RC builder. Once built and flew the Dodgson Designs Saratoga Windsong ! I am in the process to start building again.
Your video editor is awesome. This was a very concise and informative demonstration. Simple, in plain english, and didn't deviate from the subject material. I watched the whole thing start to finish.
I've built fiberglass boats for the offshore power-boating industry and also rotor blades for helicopters. We always wet the area before fabric, then wet out and roll to desired consistency. the only time we wet only on top is when using vac bags
Excellent! Your tutorial is very professional and I'm now eager to get out and start my big project! Someone suggested you sound like John Wayne but I'm voting you sound like Johnny Cash!
Great tutorial! One technical correction on the denatured alcohol. Alcohol is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water, including from the air. Manufacturers have to do special, expensive operations to get all the water out (that product is labeled "anhydrous" and costs!) - then over time it will absorb water from the air, so there's a shelf-life. A bit of searching suggests that hardware-store alcohol has around 7% water content. The cloudiness is from the alcohol ADDING water. That will cut the resin strength by some amount. Still, looks like thinning it does a great job of penetrating and hardening up the balsa (which also contains moisture) so you're getting good results, which is what counts here.
Just looking at the front end contours, you did an amazing job shaping the wood. Can't wait to try this with my modeling. Thanks for all the great tips.
I've always FEARED fiberglass- seems like it always had special techniques that I was unprepared to devise. But the realization that it's actually _EPOXY_ that holds fiber weave in place, makes sense: I've used 5-minute epoxy to waterproof firewalls, landing wells, all sorts of things. THIS just adds a little more "silkspan" technique. (Remember that stuff?) Thank you for doing this; it's very helpful!
I learned a lot fromthis video. Its a great balance of big picture information, small details, and live examples. Thank-you, I'm feeling a lot more confident about my project.
being a new modeler we find means and methods hard to find, so we just stumble upon them, like this.. AND you can use minwax wipe on poly and rust-oleum oil base enamel directly on FOAM, we discovered this while painting an Arrow foam Corsair. I happened to get some oil base paints on the foam packing and realized that not only does it not dissolve the foam, it bonds very well to the foam. The cheap paint that came on the plane peeled off with some Blue tape after I had painted with some latex water base paints; We even poured some paint thinner on the foam and it pooled on the foam but Did Not Dissolve the foam. Yes, you can coat your Foam plane with oil base poly, paint etc, resulting in a Hard structural skin.
I will be building a rocket soon that will need fiberglass reinforcements to the "fin can" section so they can withstand supersonic flights without ripping off, which I've never done before. This is the exact video I needed to have the confidence to get it done. Thanks!
Yeah, that was a good video. I particularly liked how you went into detail to explain the materials needed. One time use brushes, unbleached fiberglass and how to mix and thin the epoxy and how to lay it out. A very good tutorial. Thank you.
The best video I could find on TH-cam! Thank you sir for actually explaining what I need! I’m building a skiff for saltwater and I think I found what I was looking for. Definitely got yourself a new subscriber!
Excellent video. Greg is like the Bob Ross of the glassing world ! I too, will be using the Ziroli glass with Z-Poxy on my upcoming project. The only difference is that I will not be diluting the expoy with alcohol as I feel the viscosity of the epoxy is already thin enough out of the bottle...this is just preference.
Excellent presentation ! Very clear and concise directions on how to apply etc. Excellent lighting so I can see what's going on, excellent camera work, and probably saved me from making some huge mistakes on finishing my year long plane project. Thank you for a great You Tube tutorial. ( from Carl using my wife's account )
Great tutorial, thank you Greg! I’m new to the fiberglass world, this will help immensely. Question… I am making a fiberglass seat project which will use a plastic chair mold. I’ve read where waxing the mold will prevent the fiberglass, resin, hardener from attaching to the mold (plastic chair). Any advice here where I want to peel my fiberglass project off the mold? Thank you in advance!
After years of using fiber glass and CA glue, there's one thing I have repeatedly learned; do not wear a shirt (or pants for that matter) that you care about!
I have been using the Zpoxy Finishing Poxy but instead of measuring it all the time I use a Postage scale to weigh equal amounts on the "gram" scale. Since the Resin is slightly heavier than the Hardener there is no problem with equal mixing. Works very well for me. Bob
Robert Blubaugh Yes and No.. I do the same, but i back off on the Hardener by a full 15%.. since the Resin is heavier as you said by about that percentage.. So if you put an equal amount by weight of Hardener, you are using MORE hardener than Resin by VOLUME, and running the risk of NOT curing... so its the opposite.. I have gone a full 20% LESS (by weight) on Hardener and it cured perfectly.. and i use an extremely accurate scale ..01 gram accuracy.
Jeff from Jersey You are absolutely correct, I was thinking backwards! My scale measures only in whole whole grams and the amounts I have been mixing has not exceeded 10 grams total, not including any alcohol I added so there has not been a problem with curing, thankfully. I'll have to see about getting a more sensitive scale or mix more epoxy so that I can easily back off on the hardener to keep the ratios correct, i.e. 5/4 grams resin to hardener (maybe a couple drops more hardener).
As your scissor dull(this of course does not negate major nicks, just a dull blade set), can hone them. Just carefully keep the angled edge flat. And just hone the bevel, leave the flat inside bearing faces alone.
I'm a beginner. I want to build my whole shower stall with fiberglass. Your method of teaching really is excellent. Can you tell me where to get your complete program? Thanks Brent Hayes.Utah

This one of the best video's out there!! THX!! just one question: do you sand, each time, with 220 or do you use other paper too??
that was amazing. You said something about using a filler. what kind of filler, like wood filler?
Great video guide. Very clear and informative. Answered all the questions I had. Thank you.
Very nice, thanks for posting. I'll be outfitting my race car with new fiberglass parts with the knowledge gained from this video - Thanks!
