Thanks for extra protection advices! I seen people using catalyst with no eye protections, aero-sil with no masks etc. Great video with detailed informations. I've been learning fiberglass and gel coating repairing for 3 months now thanks for helping me expanding my knowledge.
I used to do this on the AV-8B Harrier. Showed the boys how to use the vacuum bag and heat blanket. I have an AZ K5 blazer top to save. Thanks for the help.
Can you please tell me if the gel coat needs to cover the whole thing or is it to cover the repair only? I have a Land Rover Defender fibreglass hood which was painted incorrectly (by me) and I want to remove all of the mess that I made several years ago. Do I need to sand away the poor paint back to the fibreglass and then roll gel coat over the whole thing, allow to cure, rub smooth, apply primer, rub down smooth and then paint topcoat. Is this the process that you would recommend? Many thanks Alan
Great video, I am getting started on a project some else started. There are spots that were filled with a compound that has fiberglass in it but is pink when hardened. Should I grind it out and start over or leave it. I am afraid of shrinkage once things heat up outside. Also send me the thickness of the thick mat you used? BTW where are you located? Orlando FL here.
My situation is a bit different from the video. I have a rear bumper that was damaged in transit(expected as it came from Japan) and it's couple cracks. They are the whole way through and the rear bumper is pretty thick in these areas. There is no light visible through the cracks/breaks and you can see the fibers freying of the fiber glass. What would be a good way to go about fixing this type of damage?
You are not using a roller to set your mat and roll out air bubbles and excess resin? That crucial step makes a repair much stronger by squeezing out the air and keeping the ratio of resin to mat correct for better strength and flexibility. A resin rich repair stress cracks easily..
So I have yet to find an answer as to how to repair a dually fender lower bar brace bolt hole that broke off which is slightly under 1"x1". Any suggestions?
what brand of gel coat do you use and also what type of primer for automotive paint would you use on top top of the gel coat? thanks im doing some custom reword on some widebody/fidnder flares i have on my car that are fiberglass an im having problems trying to undersand what i can use a "gell coat" after i have finished all my body work and repairs to the firberglass. basisly what i want to do is rebuild up the out side layer on the flares. hopefully that makes sense haha.
Hey, I thought your explanation was great. Not sure what gel coat is though? I’m repairing a container door on our motor home where it got tweaked when the slider opened before someone closed the container door. Thanks
Glad the video was helpful. The gel coat is the top coat that is usually applied to fiberglass parts to give them a high-quality finish to the visible surface of fiber reinforced composite.
God I hate working with fiberglass. I live in Florida, and I'm just not wearing long sleeves/long pants. Hopefully after a shower the itching will go away. I got some USC All Resin, because I'm working with SMC, and I have no idea if its epoxy or polyester, anyway, so far this stuff seems pretty damn good. B ut the damn activator instructions...awful. This stuff came with cream hardener , which is fine I guess, but i had to use at least a 1/4 what they said to use. First 3 oz batched kicked in probably less than 5 minutes. Nothing like throwing away 2.75 oz of resin. After that I cut it in half, and then half again. I'm repairing a Humvee hood, that someone else has worked on, oh joy! Any way, I really like this video.
Here in the west temperature always problem too hot resin kicks too soon too cold resin Very slow to kick you can alter ratio cat to resin some what experiment, try working when temperature less a problem the itch, dress up cover skin long sleeves gloves lotions containing lanolin rubbed on bare skin blocks pours and washes off easily hope this helps there is good money to be made in fiberglass repair
Can you comment on what kind of resin you use with that type of mat? I’ve read that some chopped strand mat can only be used with polyester resin. Thank you!
Poor technique from start to finish: no need for the screw, tape or foil on other side of crack . foil on wrong side, thick part of repair should be on underside so top can be worked to match contour., stir with stick or rod not brush, let resin rest until all bubbles gone. grind repair when resin fully cured just for start In the trade over 25 years, fiberglass repair my specialty

@classicmotorsports is it safe to use paint stripper to remove the old gelcoat??
never mix with the brush, it introduces air into the resin
What resin did you used that cured in about 20 minutes?

Dan, don’t use epoxy resin with chopped strand matt as it doesn’t have the styrene in it which allows the matt to be wet out
@@mitchfan01 does that mean polyester resin is ok for strand and woven ? But only use epoxy on woven ?? thanks
