Personally, I never could understand Tarja's "Who me?" reaction to getting fired. She said "I don't see myself like that", but this is the same bimbo who gave an interview in a German magazine in which she dissed the band, the music AND the fans--all while still a member of Nightwish. Tuomas saw it as a betrayal, hence the bitterness of the lyrics to "Bye Bye Beautiful". From what I understand, the record label wasn't very happy about it either. The woman had to go.

On the subject of Emppu, I think he doesn't get the recognition he deserves because he doesn't over play; everything he plays is there solely to enhance and reinforce the song, and that's a skill few guitarists have.

This song is high art. You have Tuomas and you have the allegorical "poet". The poet dies and then meets with his parents in the afterlife while Tuomas meets with his parents during the here and now and they console him for the pain he's gone through. The dichotomy occurs in several points during the progression. Stunning skill at composition.

I'm kinda mad still when people say Nightwish without Tarja wasn't nightwish at all, but lets remember the one who composes 98% of the music and lyrics is Tuomas, so he is in essence the band, even with her voice, she couldn't pull up nightwish without him. Don't get me wrong, shes an awesome singer and with a masterful domain of her voice, but, credit where is due. Thanks for doing more nightwish.

Next is what many here are asking... The Greatest Show On Earth live in Tampere, Finland.
There is an interview with Troy from 2017 where he tells how the idea of the song came about and how they got Prof. Richard Dawkins to personally participate in their fantastic live show in Wembley 2015.
Troy talks about it here (at 10 min 14 sec):
      th-cam.com/video/8svl7UGYVRc/w-d-xo.html
The song TGS On Earth has a lot to do with Prof Dawkins evolution approach to life on Earth , as Tuomas is an avid reader and a big fan of Prof. Dawkins, he created what Tuomas himself considers the peak of his work, as he said in an interview.
Tks for this great reaction video and all the BEST for you guys in 2019!

    • @F1rstWorldNomaD
      @F1rstWorldNomaD 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

I get what you mean but I can understand what people who said that ment. It wasnt like "theyre nothing without her" cuz as you say Tuomas is the genius behind it all but for many people (myself include) what made me a Nightwish fan *was* that very unique sound, I also listened to Within Temptation, Edenbridge and Epica but Nightwish stood above them and when Tarja disappeared that very unique sound changed and it never felt really the same (untill Floor)
I always loved both Tarjas voice *and* Tuomas music so I was one of the people who stuck around anyway, I also though Annette was a really good singer but as most I didnt feel the match was all that it could be.
Honestly I think people who said Nightwish wasnt Nightwish without Tarja was 100% convinced they would never find a replacement good enough and I cant blame them for that, Im still kinda in chock they actually found Floor.
To think there were 2 singers of that calibre on the metal stage and the same band managing to snatch both of them... those odds must be astronomical.

  • @ken_d
    @ken_d 5 ปีที่แล้ว +264

That was what happened with me as well. I heard one song, just one freakin' song after Tarja, then I stopped listening to Nightwish. I did not listen to them for years and then suddenly, a reaction video of Ghost Love Score appeared on my homepage and it got my attention. I know it was Tarja's song but it wasn't her on the thumbnail and it wasn't Anette either so I figured they have a new singer. I watched it... and I've been obesessing over them since then. Also, I tried listening to Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum just to see how I will feel about it now and I find some of the songs quite enjoyable. Anette was definitely different from Tarja but she wasn't bad. Her voice has its own charm. But Floor... Floor... Holy crap.

    • @CrisSelene
      @CrisSelene 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Because of these two I'm redescovering Nightwish. The Nightwish I didn't let myself know because I was so loyal to Tarja. But now I can have more beautiful music

    • @gorgarath
      @gorgarath 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yeah, Annette isn't a bad singer, but she just didn't fit the Nightwish sound that we all loved with Tarja. I also stopped listening to Nightwish during Annette's tenure. Thankfully they got Floor to join them and it's been amazing. And while I will sometimes go back and listen to Annette's versions of Tarja songs, I'm always underwhelmed. She does some really interesting versions, but I think the fact she just can't sing that style really hurts her performances of those.
Floor can come out and nail Tarja's songs as well as Annette's. Though, occasionally, there are some songs, Nemo for example, that I still go back to Tarja's versions because even Floor, for me, just doesn't quite reach the same places inside that Tarja did.

The last part Mother and Father is actually what his mother told Tuomas when he went home to the small town of Kitee where they all came from, Tuomas, Tarja, Jukka and Emppu. What hurt Tuomas most was that he lost a childhood friend forever. He never wanted to record this song, but eventually it appeared on the album Dark Passion Play. I have listen to it hundreds of times, and nearly ever goes without tears.

Y'know, one of the things I love about your channel above all others is the fact that you DO YOUR RESEARCH. In spite of the fact some viewers dislike the lengthy dialogue before the reaction, if you care about the music, it lends so much more gravitas because it shows you care enough to build a foundation of understanding to bolster your own reaction, as well as enrich the playing field to give greater depth to the reaction. In this instance, it gives depth and background to Tuomas's pain and some nuance to the song's origin. Y'all keep being you.

Two things a really love about this reaction...you take the time to explain the background of what happened and why this is such a personal and painful song for Tuomas, it’s so vital to understanding the complexity of the arrangement and lyrics....and I absolutely love how Sistah is so into the song, dancing along and getting emotional, really empathising with it. So many reactions are just people sitting and staring at the screen, but not this one.
Something about this video in particular is how Marko and Empu end up going to hang out with Tuomas on stage, just being near him. They know how hard this song is for him, and it’s really touching to see.

What an epic piece of art! I don't know why people would think you're faking it, but they're wrong, and idiots, besides, so don't worry about them. And I think the name Wolf was looking for, as to the name of the type of singing done by those boys, would be either falsetto, or possibly castrato.
PS Don't change the format of these videos. Wolf is like a teacher here, and his lectures have value for their own sake, besides enhancing the experience for you and many of your fans.

Yay I'm happy you're doing more Nightwish! The keyboardist wrote this song during dark times when the press was attacking him for firing their first singer, Tarja Turunen. He felt like committing suicide but decided to channel it into music so he committed "metaphorical" suicide rather than doing it in real life. He has since admitted that he has finished "sailing through dark waters" and is much happier now. He has the audio tech cut off the lyrics from his ear pieces when they play this song so he doesn't have to relive it over and over. Hope that helps with the background!
As a contrast, I would REALLY love to see your reaction to their biggest epic hit "Nightwish - The Greatest Show On Earth (Live Tampere 2015)". You will cry tears of complete happiness. It is a song chronicling the wonder of life and evolution and how amazing life is. Thanks Sistah!

Tuomas never intended Nightwish to become this huge Heavy Metal band. He had a thought, an idea, of a small folk music band. He invited Tarja Turunen in because she was already a singer and he knew her from school. She was fifteen and he was seventeen. But soon Tuomas realised that the lyrics he wrote could not be sung with just acoustic music. It had to be more. Much more. Louder. Tarja stayed on board and other musicians were called upon and stayed and Nightwish was born. As simple or as complicated as that.

Kudos to all the effort you did for this reaction! Really proper job, backstory, discussion, everything :)
The way I see it, all of them were young and immature at the time. Everybody made mistakes, and handle things unprofessionally. Tuomas has said in some interviews, that he regret that open letter and the way they handled the situation. But the outcome was inevitable.
Shitstorm of course was enormous. I remember that every media in Finland wrote about it, even the prime minister had an opinion about it. Fans were upset of course. All that must have felt crushing at the time. Somewhere between the 'cavemen' and the 'diva' lies the truth about those days..
Huge life lessons for everybody. Luckily it's 2019 now, they have dealt with it, and they are wiser & more professional musicians, and hopefully most of the fans also have moved on!

Imaginaerum isn't the typical Nightwish album, and I love it, but view it as different from most of their other work. It is more of a rock opera than a symphonic metal album. To be honest, it reminds me of Beethoven's Last Night by Transiberian Orchestra. It's more of an epic poem set to music than discrete songs.

I waited the release of "Eva" in front of my radio (they announced the day for it) and when I first heard Anette, I did like her but it was not instant love like with Tarja's voice. But I listened more and I love her era of Nightwish also, and especially Scaretale and Storytime are my favourites from her. And then... I connect with Tuomas as the writer as the core of Nightwish whereas many fans connect with the vocalist as the access to the band which is why so many fans in 2005 really blew their tops as hardcore tarja fans and hated Dark Passion Play in 2007.
Imaginaerum wasn't written FOR Annette in particular, it was written with the film in Tuomas' mind and the film soundtrack.
Imaginaerium It's a beautiful film about losing the opportunity to fix a broken relationship between a father and daughter because of dementia and the old man's previous bad experience with his own father and how his dementia is tormenting him now about his broken relationship with his little girl as all his memories are lost and as she finds his memories clearing his house. It's beautiful and tragic. Classic Tuomas. Painfully real to watch. A must see.

This song was about how Tuomas, in spite of not actually losing his mind, felt like he was trapped in his own hell -- and felt like death was the only way out. He felt strapped down to the altar of commercialism and trapped by the world giving it's disapproval. He really felt that the pendulum was dropping too slowly, and he was in mental agony, grieving over the loss of his band mate and friend. This is why you see him use his hand to slice his own neck from front to back as the pendulum makes it's last swing, and then you hear the heartbeat, because that signifies the death of Tuomas as a poet and creator.
But now? The storm had cleared, the dawn on a new era has risen -- and Floor was the healing catalyst that was needed. Watch Wacken 2013, and look at the band -- big smiles all around at times.

In my own opinion, one of the main issues that Tarja had was that at the time, 2 or 3 members of Nightwish smoked cigarettes. Tarja, like most singers avoids cig smoke like the plague, I've heard her comment in a live situation. I note that(now) Marco is the only one smoking, and he vapes. Obviously there were many other issues, but sometimes it's the small shit that really pisses you off. I'm not taking sides, this was a long time ago, just offering my thoughts.

I don't know if it's true but I also recently heard that this live performance was the first time he actually did use an ear monitor while playing it and that was why Marco and Emppu came up to him and played the last part and fist bumped him and smiled at the end. What a family, right. ❤️❤️

Its funny that you say you didn't like Imaginaerum, I was in the same boat when I first heard it. In fact, I hated it. After many listens I believe this is one of if not the best albums they have done. Along with the movie it ties in so well. I think it is a masterpiece.

I actually only bought the darned album last year... I was so misguided by it being "mellow jazz". :) After listening again, all the musical choices tie in, and it is a smooth experience. I still prefer the energy in my NIGHTWISH, but "Imaginaerum" aged really well! The only nit-pick is now I love the "Floor versions" of some of the songs better (like, she herself sings the high choral parts in "Storytime", or gives that extra "oopmh" to "The Last ride of the Day"...).
Other that that, no NIGHTWISH collection shoould be without Anette era.

Not another band on this planet could beat Nightwish into second place, not another vocalist on this planet could grace Earth like Floor.

Other than the million goosebumps I get every freaking time I listen to this version, I love the fact that Marco and Emppu come over to Tuomas, have a little 'chat' with him, basically just check if he's alright or not
    so much love

You need to review Nightwish while your lips are still red at Wembley Arena.

Now that's what I said to you, that talking about the thing what lead to this song. Thank you for doing what I suggested.

Completely forgot about Nightwish for more than a decade. Back then, "Gethsemane" hit me like a ton of bricks. Couldn't help feeling like I was witnessing something grandiose.
Let's face it, a hybrid of Metal and Opera was a very intriguing concept. But something was bothering me. This is very subjective, but as great as Tarja was technically, she couldn't reach me.
I felt a strange distant/uninvolved/coldness about her that turned me off. Like her soul was somewhere else as she was singing.
Then you guys posted the "Ghostlove score" video...which lead me to Floor and all their amazing live performances. You guys are awesome! Don't change anything. Expect to be copied in the future :)

I had a similar story with Nightwish as you had. I just couldn't connect with Imaginaerum, and just kept listening the past songs. However when I heard Floor Jansen was taking over, I immediately made myself listen Nightwish again and was not disappointed. And it keeps getting better. It has nothing to do with who is a better singer, but the esscence of the group, the sinergy and the chemistry. Go listen the Greatest Show on Earth album, full blasting sound and get ready for a ride of a lifetime. Nightwish is back

I'm not a fan of Anette's, but I do have to say that Poet and the Pendulum was one of the better songs for her. I sort of feel bad for her, all these youtubers doing reactions to Nightwish and they never pick her.

Unfortunately the first album with floor was something of a let down for me. Tuomas didnt use floors full skillset. But i'm hopefull the next album with floor will be a mesterpiece rivaling their best albuns like oceanborn.

There is a period of adjustment all around when one person leaves and someone else steps in to fill the void. Tuomas had to get more familiar with Floor's vocal capabilities. By now, he knows very well what she is capable of and can write accordingly. I cannot WAIT for the 2020 stuff to come out!!! :)

If Sistah wants to hear all the different singers, one option y’all could take is a video with every singer singing “Nemo”, as they all do it extremely well in my opinion!
Some song suggestions for each singer individually-
    Tarja:
    Higher than Hope
    Dark Chest of Wonders
Wish I Had An Angel (Good for Marco too!)
    Bless the Child
    Planet Hell (FANTASTIC for Marco)
    Annette:
    Amaranth
    Cadence of Her Last Breath
For the Heart I Once Had
    Meadows of Heaven
    Storytime
    Floor:
    Greatest Show on Earth
    Endless Forms Most Beautiful
    Élan
    My Walden
Weak Fantasy (for something a little different)
Nightwish is absolutely fantastic and I love yall’s reactions to them. But Sistah, if you love this genre of music, then you HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO check out Epica and Within Temptation. Simone and Sharon, respectivally, are such amazing and talented singers, and you definitely need to hear some of their work if you haven’t already.
For Epica, I would suggest Storm the Sorrow, Cry for the Moon, Omen: The Ghoulish Malady, Never Enough, Living a Lie, Beyond Belief, The Quantum Enigma, Design Your Universe, and Wheel of Destiny.
For Within Temptation, you should definitely see Raise Your Banner, The Reckoning, Shot in the Dark, Iron, Candles, Ice Queen, Mother Earth, Memories (A true work of art by the way), Angels, The Heart of Everything, The Truth Beneath the Rose, Hand of Sorrow, and The Cross.
Song overload I know, but Symphonic Metal is a beautiful genre of music that Sistah definitely needs to explore.
I hope y’all consider what I’ve offered in this comment that took way too long to type. ;)
