The wife part lost me at the end. During the interview he said he was single no attachments etc but when he was liberated he chose to make his first phone call to the wife - what wife? He also had a sollicitor? When did he have time to find a wife and a sollicitor and get married before ending up in that room? I'm sorry he was treated the way he was and there's a fair chance he may have been innocent but some things just don't add up, probably because he left out a lot of details and the interviewer failed to ask more specific questions.

“Oh no I was trying to go to a wedding in Pakistan but ended up in northern Afghanistan joining up with the taliban, how did that happen” 😂 hard to imagine why the military didn’t believe his story.
My bet would be that he was a dumb teenager fantasizing the taliban, decided to join them not knowing what he was getting himself into.

I do think he went to Afghanistan to fight.. I struggle to comprehend how 4 lads can get themselves caught up in such a state without their families intervening. As someone who comes from a south Asian background your family are very much a big part of most events in your life, esp travelling at a young age to that part of the world post 9/11. However he was proven innocent and illegally detained by the US. That fact won’t change despite his initial intentions for his travels

Totally agree. He gave a very cagey excuse of “we were going the wrong direction because we were being used to finance travel”. I can’t imagine the fighters begrudging travel logistics to anyone willing to fight for them, it’s peanuts to them. This man is clearly very naive, he openly admitted he had never heard of Cuba before or even had an understanding of where South America is, he also didn’t understand some of the words and terminology the interviewer was mentioning. He was clearly naive enough to think that going to explore the option of fighting for his religion was a good idea at the time. He seems close minded too, he kept mentioning they had no tissues or showers etc without realising this is a careful tactic as it’s in Muslim’s culture and beliefs that you should be thoroughly clean before eating etc and that you should douse with water after using the toilet hence they have lotas (the jugs in bathrooms). Some viewers might not understand this so would be confused why he was more pissed off that he had to use a toilet without tissue than he was about being physically tortured or underfed. He could have explained why this was during the podcast. Personally, I don’t think he’s spent much time with westernised people, only other muslims, or he would understand this difference in culture and the importance of highlighting it to listeners. For a man who doesn’t grasp the basics of other cultures or has many brain cells to rub together, it’s wild that he travelled to Afghanistan on whatever adventure he was on. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
I’ve got to tap the interviewer on the back though, the story clearly didn’t wash with him, you could tell by his reactions that he didn’t believe the man yet he still showed empathy. Whatever anyone does, illegally, human rights should be followed. So I too felt empathy in some parts.

4:21 So you chose to go to from Pakistan to Afghanistan with supporters of the Taliban after you knew a war was popping off between Afghanistan and the US? Earlier you said you weren't, "paying attention to 9/11." You then paid for the cab that transported these fighters which according to you excluded you to Kabul and didn't know it was going to Kabul? Do you understand how that doesn't add up? Not excusing what America did but do you get how that explanation sounds like a made up story?

America illegally detaining him and putting him in Guantanamo for 2 years without charging him and instead illegally torturing him is the real story here. Has others have a said there appears to be many inconsistencies here.
    1. The call to his wife (this could have just meant his now wife)
    2. The no comment interview would of had to have been advised by a solicitor. Even if he wanted to scream from the rooftops his innocence it may have been the best thing for him to do a no comment legally.
    3. 9/11 was the biggest news in the world at that time. I was also 20 years old and I remember protests in Pakistan on TV and burning of the US flag etc. No way he didnt know much about it.
    4. The time to confess. I am not doubting the torture he went through as he was specific on this. However he is extremely tough if it took 1 and a half years for him to confess. I would think most people would crack after the first round of torture.
    5. He mentions the americans telling him he was at a rally with Muhammad Atta in 2011. Muhammad Atta was a terrorist who was killed in the 9/11 operation so the date is wrong. It would have had to have been before he died.
    6. If he had community service and they dont know if its 1st of august of the 8th of Jan. 150 hours at 8 hours a week means he would of finished his community service between these dates. as would of been done in 5 months tops.
    7. He says most people were innocent there. Maybe that was what they were claiming but a detainee eventually gave up a courier who eventually led them to Bin Laden so it did accomplish something in the end.
But was a interesting story. Ultimately he was naive and i dont think he will ever be returning to Afghanistan.

He didn’t join the Taliban, he went with 2 of his friends to a wedding in Pakistan and then he was captured and ended up in the worlds worst torture facilities for 2 years without trial. America is responsible for this degrading and inhumane treatment against these prisoners and not to mention innocent people in general. The US is supposed to respect and recognise human rights and ensure fair and proper treatment of citizens and prisoners alike, but if you look at the state of the country today it’s an absolute joke. The corrupt and harsh judicial system being number one on my list, as not only are so many innocent people being locked up every day but also the exceptionally harsh and lengthy jail terms for even the most minor of crimes. For example in the UK if you commit burglary then you’ll receive only a couple of years in jail, whereas in America you’ll get like 20 years possibly the rest of your life, that’s just one example. But the point remains that America is the worst country for human rights abuse, improper treatment and unlawful detention. The sooner you guys change your ways, the better.

I’m having to take this in with a grain of salt. I mean this happened a month after 9/11. Nobody really knew what exactly what was happening that quickly, but basically your country sold you out and said you were Taliban. Therefore our soldiers had to protect themselves while still taking care of y’all. I can imagine the distrust on both sides. Probably half of those soldiers lost someone they knew in 9/11. And the Afghans or Taliban, I’m a little confused on who y’all were traveling with before you were held by the Americans, told you not to say a word about who you were or where you were from. They were setting you up to be wary and scared of us while we were all wary and scared of all Muslim countries in the beginning before we really understood what had happened. Most of the soldiers were probably 18 & 19 years old also / either your age or a year older and here they are fighting this ugly war out of the blue… it’s all a recipe for disaster. I’m sorry that I cannot understand what you went through, but I just don’t have the capacity because I’ve never been in such a situation. I’ve heard of some of the atrocities committed by the Afghani women and also by the Russians and I won’t even try to to understand that because the depravity is too much for my brain to comprehend. I hope that everyone that was involved in that nightmare has taken a step back, or at least tried to, and put themselves in other peoples shoes and have empathy for them and the positions they were put into. That’s the only way that healing, forgiveness and maybe understanding can start to take place
So after all that, I’m still going to heed my mother’s very sage advice because it’s gotten me this far. “Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see”. God bless us, every single one.
