    I am not trying to offend anyone at Pew Pew writing this , I am a fan . I have made a hobby of painting 5 of my rifles " all AR Sporting rifles " and there is a right and wrong way . Any job worth doing is worth doing right in my book. When I take my rifles to the range I am always approached and complemented . It is one thing to paint a rifle with iron sights and another to paint one with a matching optic. Masking is important ! and a little time consuming, but well worth the effort. I use a glass window pane from Home Depot with the edges taped to lay out painters tape on and a straight edge to cut the lengths and widths I need.
    Mask your sight post and the screw adjustment on your rear sight " if you ever want to adjust it again " I strongly suggest you mask the Manufacturer name and serial # as several coats of paint may fill or distort numbers " and if you ever decide to sell it
    you don't want a a spot with scratched off paint to show the maker " . I make my own stencils if I am doing an intricate pattern like Multi cam by using wax paper , covering both sides with painters tape " slightly overlapped " cut out my snake or blob and peel it apart with a razor knife and WA LA a stick on stencil . An easier method with more controlled fantastic results is The Sea Sponge Method " NOT your wife's kitchen sponge ! " A porous Sea Sponge can be bought at Home depot or an art store, using scissors cut different size pieces from it " for different patterns " . Testor's Models paints sell many flat finish military colors to use with your sponges.
    First SPRAY your entire rifle with a Base color then use the sea sponge to dab different colors " one at a time " and be sure to blot the sponge before you put it to the gun so you don't have too much paint on it. I did a Deep Gray base Urban camo job on my AR Pistol and used 4 shades of gray " Testor's model paints " carefully dabbed on it and it turned out Fantastic !
    There are some Guide lines that make camo truly " effective " Always have your darkest and lightest paint's all along the top and bottom of the rifle " this breaks up the outline . Don't be afraid to use your lightest color paint " in small areas " the lightest shade " of the color you are using " ever notice Multi-cam has White in it " And I always use at least two coats of Rustoleum spray on Matte Clear coat to protect
    the finish and it works well. Let me know if you have questions or need help. A company called Arvoe makes excellent spay cans of current authentic military colors for $6-$7 you can order on line their Coyote and Light Coyote are awesome by themselves . I have used Brownells aluma-hyde but you are supposed to bake it on and that takes patience " and a forging wife " Don't get in a rush ! let each color dry overnight " if spraying " and you will have a one of a kind rifle you can be proud of.

    Some things to remember:
    1) LIGHT COATS!!! and let each coat dry between sprayings.
    2) When you paint your mags and optics, be careful of the rubber parts. they dont like paint. or brake cleaner. or you, probably.
    3) after cleaning off all oils, your first coat should be self-etching primer. it really REALLY helps the paint stick.
    i tiger striped mine, carefully painting each shadowed stripe on by hand. it took three days, but i also like to paint models of tanks so it was fun for me. anyways, the gun is only to be used at a range of 30' at 4 in the morning when someone anti-social knocks in the front door. and every few months at the range, where i get bombarded with requests to paint other folks stuff. nope.

    • @100GTAGUY
      @100GTAGUY 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Groff you could probably hydrodip it but I don't personally know how it'd hold up to wear n tear compared to a proper paint job. But painting anything isn't really "tacky" (assuming it's done with decent quality) it's simply a way to personalize something and or add a protective layer from the sun and other elements.
      I'd go with powder coat personally because I've seen how hard it is to sandblast off engine parts, it's durability blew my mind. There's also just about endless possibilities for color, you could probably even find a match for your local dirt and foliage. Sure it definitely costs more, but it varies especially if you can find someone who has a small PC setup they use for small personal projects willing to help ya out.

    • @MichaelGroff
      @MichaelGroff 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@100GTAGUY you kinda made my point for me. Cerakote is def higher quality, a better finish and an overall more professional way to go about it over the "tacky" way if just hitting with some spray paint. I asked a friend about this and he's done it to a few of his AR's and he has mentioned that it even feels tacky(on his cheek and in his hands) in comparison to a cerakote job. But to each their own. It def gets the job done for a fraction of the cost that a professional job would run you.

    Do NOT use BRAKE CLEANER to clean your rifle!!!
    Brake cleaner will get it clean but it leaves behind a residue, so the paint will take forever to dry, scratch off with your thumbnail, and get sticky if you hold it for a long time. Clean it with one round of acetone, two rounds of alcohol, and a round of distilled water. Use clean towels for each phase. Let it sit for an hour, then get your paint on. (Also, I still hit the like button because I’m not a complete douche bag.)

    Did you really spray it down with brake kleen? Seems like it would melt the rubber grip and stock. Just curious.

      Yup, it's always been fine and we've done this on probably a dozen builds. We don't go nuts on it though.

    $20 gets a cerakote kit to finish a full AR, a little more prep work that you should probably do with rattle cans anyway...but a massive improvement in durability etc.

    A part of me wants to paint my AR but I think I'll keep it original, mainly because I only have 1 AR with a lot of time and money into it and Idk when I can afford another. I could paint it and love it today, then feel like I ruined it in a week. I do like to admire paint jobs like this tho. I may buy throw away furniture that I can paint and just leave the barrel, receivers and original furniture the way I bought it.

      Dont do it painting Ar-15s is something, dudes that live in their mothers basement do, to play soldier and try to impress their looser friends. You say you put alot of money into your rifle, if you have to have it refinished send it off to a Pro, and have it ceracoated, or a number of other finish options they can do now a days, it will look way better, and adults wont look at you like your a idiot when you bring it to the range to shoot.

      @The Weapon Collection actually i wrote another comment in for this video that says "if you are not in the active military, painting your rifle is stupid" , one you will never be able to sell said rifle, to if you do some how prove me wrong and find a shit hole pawn shop that will take it the value is automatically dropped, two: Your not a professional sniper, three: even if you were painting your "personal rifle" is still dumb, four: black blends with ALMOST all enviroments, five: the shit has NOT hit the fan, and if it does, paint on your rifle wont save you,(and if you actually need it painted why not wait till the shit does hit the fan. Just incase your fantasy of world ending zombiez that attack black rifes and not painted ones, never comes to life. Six: they make stuff that helps your bright black rifle blend into environments that black stands out in. Its called FDE colored rifles.
