I was a professional painter with a company for 15 years. 👍🏻 nice job, and a Few tips... If you are further away, you can get a softer mist coat. There are also better spray tips on some cans that allow a vertical or horizontal spray fan pattern. I’d also recommend a spray polyurethane like Hellmsman green can that will seal in finished product with water and uv plus scratch resistance. There are also semi-transparent tinted polyurethanes that can add another dimension or see through color to finish. I did a 22 1940’s rifle once like this.
You can also heat the spray paint can in warm water and it will help the paint flow and get better spray patterens Thanks for your video was enjoyable to watch
My wife gets mad when I buy a new gun and spray paint it lol when they are all camo she can’t tell if it’s a new one or not. I always use jungle colors in large crossing bars mixed with dark green or flat black tiger stripes. It blends in perfectly here where I live.
Man there’s something about spraying... 3 thousands dollars worth of rifle/attachments (w/5 $ can-paint) that I just LOVE..Although I would NOT recommend posting ANY pics of ur “finished products” on social media!
I agree. My m&p 15 I painted but I only have about $700 in it. I just did a mossberg 500 (western field). Took 10" off the barrel it came out badass. A $70 gun.

I've painted several of my own rifles without using decals or patterning of any kind. After seeing them at the gun club, several guys have asked me to paint their rifles. Additionally, I use Brownells AlumiHyde ll. It comes in many colors and is an air activated epoxy based paint. It's not quoted as rugged as CeraKote but takes a beating with little chipping or wear. I typically use OD, brown, FDE, and Parkerized Grey... AlumaHyde ll is easy to use. Spray it on, wait 30 min. (dry to touch), spray next color (always go dark to light), then repeat until you have what you like. After finishing, you have to let the AlumaHyde ll cure for 2 weeks.
Daaang it ..... now I got to try that then move up to my Jeep.. Awesome video like always .. straight to the point and I can still watch your other videos with out charging my phone
Nice job and good video. I love doing mods when needed or to save money, etc, and to create and build things. We are all creators..For anyone depressed or having other problems because of all the craziness going on, remember that, and as preppers and survivalists, there are always things to do, alot that don't even cost money or very little. Everyone, keep your mind busy and your head up as things around us seem to be crumbling. God bless.
Good advice. I just got done doing a mossberg 500. I prefer the jungle colors also. For my patterns I used the flora on my property. I did my m&p 15 this summer and it came out trick. Used ferns on it. I've been prepping for about 8 yrs. Staying active till I get back to work. Good on ya Mr.🇺🇸
Rustoleum has some flat paint that is great. It's available in black, brown, grey, and green. I have an AR that I'm going to camo. In my area, there are lots of ferns to use for stencils. If you clearcoat the paint, use flat or super flat.
Just some tips for folks doing this. If you don’t have stickers, lay some masking tape out on plexiglass, cut off the straight edges, and make your own shapes. Also, when clear coating, lusterkote makes a solvent resistant clear coat, originally made for model airplanes. But it will make lighter colors like white or tan a little darker. I always let the paint dry before peeling stickers. Its like unwrapping a mummy at the end. And it really pops if you use multiple colors. The rifle in the video looks really good. Good luck to everyone.
Great job! I definitely would have used more earth tones, and used a sniper veil to add a good breakup pattern, but either way it still looks good! I'm guna have to get me some of those stickers!🤜🤛🇺🇸🇺🇸
I'm planning on redoing the factory camo on my Mossberg Thunder Ranch MVP LR after deer season. I don't want to smell like an auto body shop while walking to my hide. It currently has what looks like a Rhodesian camo pattern. I'll use native flora for patterns.
Thank for vid boss. Man I went odd ball urban with mine. Lol grey's and whites.... I've found also that the really beautiful/detailed paint jobs that look amazing up close, from far away it still just looks like a gun. So big wide patterns camo out the best. Only my .02$.. thnx for making vid
Jack... If you ever have problems with paint chipping/dinging, try using Brownells AlumaHyde ll... It comes in many different camo colors, and it's an epoxy type paint that's almost CeraKote tough. The only downside is the 2 week "Full Cure" time and its pricey ($24.00/can in 2015). I have used this (rattle can type) paint exclusively on all my builds for the last 20 years..!!!
I know this is an old post , but im about to black multicam cerakote a wilson combat ar. The stencil shape is as important as the colors you choose. You dont by any chance know which stencils you used on this project do you. The stencil shape is perfect for what i need.
Larry, unfortunately we were going to our cabin on Bear Lake in Northern Utah and were planning on moving our firearms (what few we had) due to civil unrest in cities. As were crossing the lake some individuals in a speed boat (apparently drinking) came too close and swamped our boat! We lost everything! We don't know exact location because the lake is rather large (AND DEEP) and the wind pushed our overturned boat for some distance before being rescued. Our rescuers told authorities that they THINK the area where we were capsized was in about TWO HUNDERED FEET DEPTH . I or my friend have no real clear memory as we were starting to suffer from hypothermia.... Unfortunately my homeowners insurance policy will not cover the loss. Be sure to get a special rider for firearms if you ever lose any--but as we found out, EVEN if we had it, hard to file a claim with lack of proof so we never even thought about it! . Understand there is a lot of wierd things happening these days! GOOD LUCK TO ALL, !
The painting your rifle is your own choice but I heard somebody want to say well you paint your rifle so it makes it hard to discern at distance if a person is carrying a weapon or not but in a sthf scenario there is no Geneva convention and if I see a person with camouflage walking through the woods whether I see them armed or not 🤷♂️
SHOULD THE STOCK OR ITEMS TO BE PAINTED BE WIPED OFF FIRST WITH ALCOHOL, ACETONE, OR PAINT THINNER TO REMOVE ANY OIL, DIRT, GREASE OR OTHER CONTAMINATE?
Ive rattle canned all my rifles. One thing ive learned is there is camoflage patterns and then theres true camoflage. I stopped paying attention to the exact perfection of a repeating pattern and started paying attention to how the eye percieves patterns. Use your areas color tones, stick to 3 colors, break up the patterns into medium and small. Off the shelf camo rifles are like one size fits all pants. Btw im a proffesional artist.

If he hung it, it would gave been easier to paint and create a flow. I agree he was too close, but he made his point, still a good demo.
My father did this 2 his hunting rifle ,i almost cried when i seen it .That nice shiny browning automatic, he did the barrel and everything .

In my humble opinion, this is the best DIY demo for black camo painting. Simple, but effective. Great job.

Leaves , branches , grass and netting also make outstanding stencils..hold it further away for softer edges- closer for sharper edges❤
Best one I’ve seen on you tube. Doing my ak and I wasnt too happy with anyones results until I saw your video. Nice stuff

I just painted my Tikka stock with this method. It turned out rad.

I can blow your mind with just some pine straw and homemade tiger stripe stencils. Best rattlecan job you ever saw.
