Best Balanced Fly Pattern! Two-Toned Baitfish

  • This is a fly pattern I’ve been improving on for years. I originally tied it to imitate baitfish at Pyramid Lake. I quickly learned that this fly works EXTREMELY well in any type of fishing environment. I’ve caught everything from bass and carp to lake trout and river browns on this fly. When tying balanced leeches, I usually stick with an extremely sparse body, which I believe does a better job of imitating the undulations of a swimming leech. Baitfish, on the other hand, don’t ungulate and “breathe” in the same way. They are solid bodied prey items which either sit still, or dart quickly. A thick bodied fly does a better job of imitating baitfish type movements.
The materials for this fly are as follows:
    Hook - Firehole Sticks 511 1XL 2XG #8
Bead - Fulling Mill 4.2 mm black nickel tungsten
    Thread - Veevus 16/0 Olive
Tail - Hairline Blood Quill Marabou Olive and White
Flash - Flashabou Accent or Crystal Flash
Body - Olive Ice Dub, Olive Brown Bruiser Blend, Minnow Belly White Ice Dub
Eyes - 3.0 mm Fish Skull Living Eyes Ice
    Resin - Solarrez Bone-Dry

When I went to tie it, the top white dubbing loop would very easily pull back and out and the whole belly would unravel. Do you have any tips to avoid that?

Nicely done! That was a smart change to wrap the green layer first to avoid the awkwardness off the hook eye later on!

This was the first fly I tried that on! I like the way it worked out. But from now on, I think I’ll apply some super glue to the body before laying down the belly dubbing. Seems like a week point the way it is.

Double loops, never done that before. Makes for a sweet two tone minnow.....and balanced no less!

also a note , when applying the bead on the pin before tying it down .Position the bead in reverse direction (there is a large opening and a small opening )Place the lg. opening on the hook point and slide it up to the head of the pin.The bead will then form around the head of the pin .BE CAREFUL not to apply to much resin ,it adds weight to the head. To check the balance run a pin or wire through the eye of the hook and suspend it in the air the hook should balance horizontaly (flat). If not, you can adjust the pin and bead forward or backward when tying the next one.

This looks GREAT! I recently discovered "balanced" flies, and I was looking for a small baitfish pattern to hang on a dropper beneath a foam terrestrial. I will give this one a try!

They sure are effective. I’ve started tying a similar version using craft fur. If it does well at pyramid next week, I’ll make a video for that one as well.

Why do you use a pin to place the bead? What happens if your bead was placed on the hook near the hook eye? Would it not ride upside down?

    • @SoggySleeves
      @SoggySleeves  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Offsetting the bead with a pin is just the traditional way of making the fly “balanced”, so It hangs completely horizontal when suspended in the water. I actually almost never use this method anymore. Now I just use an “Insta-Jig” bead, and place it on the jig hook. No pin assembly. It doesn’t hang completely horizontal, more like 45°, when using the insta-jig bead, but it really doesn’t make any difference. If there’s any sort of wind or chop on the surface, causing the fly to move, it will hang horizontally.
The reality of it is, I doubt either method actually catches more fish than just using a straight-shank hook, and a classic bead for weight. At lost not in a significant way. I think us fisherman do a lot of things to boost our own confidence, and fish probably don’t care haha.

very nice where could I get some of those for my trip in March if possible

    • @SoggySleeves

I wish I had the free time to do custom orders right now! No promises on my end. I’ll reach out to you if I end up being able to whip up a dozen or so before your trip.
But in the meantime, your safest bet is to reach out to Reno Fly Shop, or trout_trap on Instagram. I know trout_trap does custom orders. And I think the Reno fly shop has a balanced baitfish pattern for pyramid.
If you do reach out to them, would you mind mentioning my name? Not because they’d give you a discount or anything, I just admire those guys and want to get my name out there more.

Why would you "balance" it. ? That restricts its action.
