Ingredients:
8½ cups, white flour
2 Tbsp, fast rising or traditional yeast
¼ cup, melted butter or margarine, more for hands and pans
½ tsp, sea salt
½ cup, brown Sugar
2 Cups, warm water more if needed
¾ cup, molasses
1 tsp, vanilla
2 tbsp, cinnamon
½ Tsp, ground Cloves
2½ cups, raisins
½ Tbsp, white Sugar
Prep time: 10 minutes, mixing time: 10 minutes, rising time: 2 x ½ hour, baking time 30 minutes
Method:
1 - Combine in large bowl: 8 cups flour, ½ cup brown sugar, sea salt, raisins, cinnamon and ground cloves, mix together.
2 - In another bowl, add dry fast rising or traditional yeast with 1 cup warm water and ½ tbsp white sugar, let rise for a five minutes.
3 - In another bowl add 1 cup of warm water and ¾ cup molasses mix together, then melt ¼ cup butter in a glass bowl.
4 - When yeast is ready pour over flour mixture in bowl then start adding the warm water, butter, molasses and vanilla mixing all ingredients together with a spoon or kitchen aid until it thickens then keep adding flour to work dough together, add more water if need at this stage ONLY” this will be done with your hand.
5 - Knead dough, add more flour if necessary until dough is smooth , elastic and no longer sticky and you can hear cracking sounds of the dough when folding dough inward, keep working dough into a ball.
6 - When completed sprinkle some flour over the top. I always draw the sign of a cross a few times on top then cut the top of the dough like a cross then cover with parchment paper and big towel. “Crossing your bread is optional”.
7 - Let rise in a warm place on your counter top until dough rises for 30 minutes then knead it down for a couple of minutes.
8 - Repeat this step letting the dough rise again for another 30 minutes.
9 - After your dough rises “ DON’T DEFLATE DOUGH” and cut in pieces forming it inwards into a ball, placing dough in bread pans, place three buns in each pan.
10 - Makes 3 loafs of bread keep covered and in a warm place until bread rises half the size you started with or just 30 minutes.
Pre-heat oven at 350 degrees F, bake bread for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown or depending on your oven, when bread is baked take out of your pans and place them out on a cooling rack.
BAKING TIPS: Sweet bread don't rise the same as white bread and it's a little heavier but ever so good. Grease bread with butter then cover with parchment paper and towel to soften tops. Don’t deflate the dough on its last rising because you need the air to stay in dough when folding them into balls.

Mom made newfie homemade bread for years and years all the while us youngsters were growing up and it was amazing! She had to give it up cuz of arthritis in her shoulders from all the years of kneading.
Watching this video tonight. My mom made the best sweet molasses raisin bread! Much the same as your recipe. And yes, she always blessed her bread. She taught me to make bread when I was a teenager but it’s been a while since I’ve made any. Watching this video brought tears because my mom passed away almost 31 years ago. Thank you for this video.

This came up as I was browsing. This is a good Christmas show. My mom made it exactly like you, without the cloves and vanilla, though. Shedoubled the recipe as there were 10 of us in the family. My older brother bakes too many batches during Christmas. Some he gifts. The same with fruit cakes. He made 16 this years as gifts. They are always a hit with their big family. ❤
Oh my that is so wonderful Peter!! Thank you for stopping by and sharing your lovely message. I love making food gifts for our family, friends and neighbours. Hi Miss Bonita! I just put some sweet Molasses Raisin bread in to rise. I can't wait to see how it comes out! I made white bread yesterday and it came out beautifully! Hi lovely Bonita…gee I’ve been following you for a while but I’ve never seen this video before. I had to modify my loaf (I used the 1 loaf recipe you kindly provided) as I found that I had NO raisins left…..so I swapped in some chopped dates & dried apricots & continued on with your recipe. Oh my goodness this was absolutely delicious & reasonably easy to make too. I’ll be making it your way with the raisins next time. You’re a brilliant teacher & you explain everything so well & in such a kind manner. Once again thank you & greetings from Adelaide in South Australia.
Oh my gosh! You are so lovely and thank you for your detailed message and I'm so glad you enjoyed our recipe. It is a blessing to know how our recipes is moving across the world and enjoyed by so many wonderful people. I got to try this bread I ate this bread growing up, loves it i do,
I love this video and I love you…..I am aNewfoundlander,,,and I wanted to learn how to make this! I will let you know if it turns out….Thanks a million girl!
Hi Catherine, Welcome to our channel and thank you for stopping by. This is a lovely bread recipe and so easy to make. Because it's your first time making it be careful with the first stage. The texture at the mixing stage needs to be wet and sticky while mixing. If you are mixing with your standup mixer it will help if not and you are mixing by hand just take your time and when all the dough forms into a ball. You can start dusting with flour to bring it together. I hope this is clear and enjoy to the fullest!!! Bonita
I do love the way you add ingredients to the sides of the flour so you can see the different ingredients. There's nothing wrong with whatever old wives tale. You aren't shoving anything down anyone's throat...you are simply doing what you do. You are in your own home.
I do have to laugh though at your wrapping your dough up though...it must be REALLY cold up there 😂.
Love the video. Having grown up there, I miss my mudder's raisin bread and will give this recipe a go,
I'm glad you enjoyed our video and recipe for Sweet Molasses Bread, it is in deed and lovely bread, The house will smell like Christmas morning with the cinnamon and spices. Enjoy and thank you for stopping by, email me if you need any more help when you make it.....bonitakitchen@gmail.com :) Bonita
I do put molasses in whole wheat and oatmeal bread but hadn't used it in raisin bread. Bonita's recipe ROCKS. I plump up my raisins in the microwave with a little bit of water if they have been stored for a while and are very dry. Then I let them cool before it's time to put them in the dough. The bread is fantastic for breakfast with some butter.
That is so lovely and smart! Hydrating the raisin was a wonderful idea. This is a lovely recipe and one we make mostly at Christmas time. Have a Happy Valentine's Day. :) Bonita
Thank you ever so much Bonita. My children are even excited about the smell and for the first time we a better homemade breAd at home.😁☺️👌☺️😗😊

I just started making yeast breads a little more than a year ago and I've been married for 50 years!! Haha!
I've been looking for a recipe for an 'ordinary & old-fashioned' brown bread for a long time and thanks to you,I've found it!! I didn't want to add 2 or 3 different flours - just all purpose flour!
I hope I can 'half' this recipe(?) because I won't be able to mix that dough by hand and neither will my KitchenAid mixer be able to mix it (I'm 68 and have very little strength in my arms). This is exactly what I was looking for...molasses,brown sugar & raisins! Once again, thank you so very much!! Oh,by the way, I live relatively close to you...I'm in Nova Scotia! I've been to Newfoundland perhaps 5 times...my sister lived there for 20 years.
Hi JoAnn: Thank you for your message and for visiting our channel, I'm so glad you found us. Oh my its so nice you stopped by, I have so many good friends living in Nova Scotia. I love working with dough but I will agree its very hard on your hands and arms. Its nice you have a kitchenAid to help you make it, I'm sure you will be able to half the recipe. This is a lovely old fashion recipe with a few simple ingredients, enjoy to the fullest and have a wonderful Mother's Day weekend. :) Bonita
@@bonitaskitchen Thank you for the fast reply! I'm going to try to get some of that bread made over the weekend...I would also like to wish you a very Happy Mother's Day,as well!! xo

OMG Bonita
I’ve been looking for this receipe for so long. Growing up in coastal Labrador my mom and grandmother would make this at Christmas and Easter but instead of salted butter they used shortening and salted pork cut in tiny chunks and they heated the molasses and put the shortening and port in the molasses and brought it to a slow boil before adding the yeast to it. It was so good so I’m glad I found this video. Now I’m going to try and modify your recipe with what I remember
Thank you thank you. You made my day
That is so wonderful Ellen I'm so glad to help and thank you for leaving a message and stopping by. This is a recipe our elders would make for Christmas and Easter for sure, to have with fish and brewis, oh my enjoy to the fullest and follow up with your added ingredients and send me a picture at bonitakitchen@gmail.com :) Bonita
We only ever referred to it as Easter Bread and I’m just wanting to try my hand at it now that I’m retired and have time
@@WANDERINGSPIRIT2023 Yes, I'm glad you are going to give this one a try, don't forget to listen to the dough. If you need more warm water add it, if you need more flour add it. The outcome is all in the dough and its texture. Have fun and enjoy :) Bonita

Hi Bonita, thank you so much for your wonderful videos I am really enjoying them. I had no idea your channel existed my aunt from Newfoundland shared it with me. I was able to make my first batch of bread using your recipe and it turned out great. Could not have done it without watching you. Can you please tell me where I can find a bowl like yours with the lid?
Hi Marsha, Thank you and your aunt for enjoying our channel, I'm glad you are enjoying our bread recipes and you can share any of our videos with your family and friends if you wish. I got that bowl years ago in Edmonton at the IKEA store and it was about 20 years ago. They may still carry them, take care and stay safe. :) Bonita

Thank you so so much for this recipe ... my mom is from PEI and this looked so much like hers I just had to try... the dough smells just like I remembered as a child ... mine are rising in the pans right now ... but I’m worried I didn’t knead it well enough ... I make a lot of white bread but this is my first attempt at sweet bread and it’s just not rising hardly at all ... I’ll put in the oven soon and let you know how it goes . I watch so many more of your videos you sound like so many of my aunts from the east coast it’s like having them right here with me 💜... thank you for that and for these amazing videos that have reminded me of so many flavours from my childhood. I just turned 50 in July and sadly lost my husband in March to a brief battle with cancer. Please know you have brought a little peace to my shattered heart with your Lovely Bonita’s Kitchen ! 😘
Oh my that is so sweet of you, but very sad to hear about your husband, I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your story about your mom and I'm so glad to help bring back some beautiful memories of your mom. Happy Belated Birthday and you will do great with your molasses bread it is harder to work with then white but if you are already a baker it will be lovely. Thank you one again for stopping by and Happy New Year. :) Bonita
Wonderful
Thank you :) Bonita
Made this today - I did the 1 loaf version of the recipe, which actually made two "mini" loaves in disposal foil loaf pans. Simply OUTSTANDING results. I've already eaten a half of one loaf and will share the other with my Alan Doyle super-fan son on Sunday.
That is so wonderful, thank you for following up after you made it, enjoy to the fullest. Merry Christmas. :) Bonita
