Two mistakes Notch made with Minecraft:

Geizio Well.. without orienting with objects most of them are awmost the same...
Csharp maybe would be better in minecraft, even maybe paired with the directx api, as manu gpus are more optimized for it. The newer ones are now getting along opengl, but the mid-low end and older ones dont.

Samuele Canale Yeah, a game that had much more content than minecraft, but forgotten beucause of it.

Caleb Alexander It had! Many bosses without any mod, like wall of flash, skeletron, big eye of cthulhu, etc. It has tons of different ores, and different equippament, much more than even minecraft has with mods.
Terraria has many places, like hell (minecraft had the underworld but nothing to do there, here you fight against some bosses), it has the corruption (a entire biome that has dungeons and such), it even has a boss called queen bee in the jungle. It has a great variety of items, like broad, short swords, hammers, axes, enchantments that even minecraft didnt had.
Its has some sazonal events, as the gobling invasion, bloodmoon (where tons of zombies spawn and will try to kill you and your npcs).
It has a way better and usefull system of salesman npcs, in minecraft there only some villagers that will want thousands of emeralds for like a iron pickaxe, in terraria you really have a usefull system to buy and sell things, not a stupid villager that will want thousands of emeralds to give you shit, and aways things easy to get.
It has tons of possible armour combinations, and much more..
I played minecraft for a long time, and i must say, minecraft vanilla doesnt have even 20% of what terraria has... Even with mods, minecraft dont have like 50% of the content that terraria has to offer, and without even counting with the mods.
Its a 2d game? Yeah, but its way more complex than minecraft. I am not saying that minecraft is the worst game, i still like it, but terraria has way more content and things to do...

Honestly, I enjoy your version of biome generation leagues more than the biome generation used in minecraft.
The generation they use doesnt feel like it's trying to make a desert or mountain, it just feels like they take one or two key features from the desired biome and apply it to the standard forest. Fields are just flat and no trees, mountains are just tall with stone, deserts have no trees and use sand, etc. The footage you've shown here looks like you've focused primarily on getting the topography and layout of the biome correct as opposed to just the details.

The original game has a hell of a lot more features, so it is not exactly fair to compare performance.

Original Minecraft was made in Java. It was a bad decision back then. Good for modding, bad for performance. Minecraft needs a proper C++ version (well Windows 10 Edition is C++ and runs miles better than the Java one) and needs a proper modding API.
No, Java was not the reason Minecraft performs so poorly, design and implementation was.
Try making a core mod for Minecraft and see for yourself.
The potions management code is probably the most cryptic, but I managed to crack it and add my own potions.
The only thing better is the fps, this game crashes every few minutes. It's so unstable.

Also I just tested it out. You might know these bugs but here it goes:
1) I get bounced off if my head hits a block.
2) I broke a log and then it crashed.
3) When I generated new chunks it crashed.

There is a problem... When you launch the game it says "Error compiling shader : ERROR 0:3: 'location' : syntax error parse error"

Hey, great work. The "launch" you're getting when clearing the water's surface is because, as a criterion for switching to "watery" physics, you're checking your playing character's lower block for contact with water, meaning you can still use the "unbound jump" when your head has cleared the water surface.
To fix this, just use the character's upper block instead. This will also help imitate how in Minecraft you can swim upwards through "water pillars" and essentially use them as no-redstone elevators.
Would coloured lights be possible to implement? Or are you going to do the same lighting style as Minecraft?

How do you compile the source code?
Hmm... I have tried compiling myself on Linux Mint by generating the Makefile with CMake and then running the Makefile, but then I got the following message:

You should just create a better minecraft. Limitations of java hold minecraft back in terms of what can be implemented into the game. You dont have that problem.
