    That is an extremely detailed but entertaining review. Thank you!
    Most people will not change their rims too often so the plugs will fit the purpose. And as this product obviously requires some DIY capabilities we are targeting PC owners who are also able to build up their own PC and handle blank PCBAs.

    • @glenorpheus
      @glenorpheus 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      is the mobile phone attachment included or do you have to purchase that separately ?

    • @StephenWestrip
      @StephenWestrip 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do not agree with Fanatec's expectation of who is going to buy this but I do agree with Barry that the plugs are not fit for purpose. They are not meant to be unplugged that often at all as they are PCB plug/sockets and not designed for the usage Fanatec have given them.

      Barry used three wheel rims and had to unplug the cables ONE time. How likely is it that people buy a wheel base with a quick release system to change their steering wheels within seconds and then they buy just one universal hub and spend 30 minutes to change their wheel rims?

    • @glenorpheus
      @glenorpheus 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fanatec Endor were and how can we purchase the mobile phone attachment for the universal wheel hub please, i'll ask again as the first time appeared to have slipped past (",)

      Fanatec Endor People who don't want to by the hub with every wheel they purchase? I can understand why Fanantec would prefer this from a business point of view. But, isn't this why you have the wheel rims available to purchase separately? Changing wheels out using the screws on the face plate of the hub, would not be a big deal for most people. But to change out the pod configuration, you have no choice but to go inside the hub. To me, needlessly exposing the circuit board and causing stress to the board at the socket locations. I had thought about attaching a Q1R QR base to the hub and just mount the opposing QR plates to different wheels, but this would move the wheel rim, once attached to the QR base, too far away from the hub's pod and paddle locations to be able to use them. Although with custom wheels sporting their own electronics and shifter, this would not be an issue. I have to stand by my statements in this review, that Fanantec could have made just two minor, at least to me, design changes on locating the pod plugs along the perimeter of the hub casing, and pod lever attachment mechanics that allowed you to attach these levers with out opening the hub. It would make this hub a more durable, and user friendly solution. I think Fanantec may be unnecessarily exposing themselves to long term reliability issues with this design. Of course this is just my opinion and I'm no electronics engineer, but I do have common sense. At least most of the time! When I was pulling on those plugs to remove them from their circuit board sockets I had a feeling of geez these things are tight! And I was not comfortable with the amount of force it required. Don't read me wrong here. I mean these to be constructive comments. I like Fanantec products in general, and as you saw in the review, I still recommend this hub to those who want to use different wheel rims with their CSW base. I know of many who do not build their own PC, or handle PCBA's, but use Fanantec products. So, if this really was Fanantec's target demographic for this hub, then you might want reconsider, and take a wider view of who will actually be buying and using this hub.

    Great review Barry, as always. You cut to the core issues, and I truly appreciate that.
    One big concern is the LED display when mounted vertical, I can see someone in the heat of battle reaching for a button press and wiping it out.
    Now if Fanatec can only do two things, address quality control items in the CSW base, and provide an even leaner wheel base kit, for the DIY people who just want the hub connector, and electronics, and basically want to make a custom wheel.
    Fanatec should also offer a CSW base slider kit, something akin to seat adjusters, where you can easily move the base in and out when you change rims, because most will have different distances from hub to wheel.

    I am new to the Fanatec world. Just received my wheel and Universal Hub in the mail. Today, the hub comes assembled and one I got called "ClubSport Steering Wheel Universal Hub for XBOX ONE." I also got an oval type style wheel, more so for stock car oval racing. Its a bit deeper wheel so I will most likely be also moving the shifters forward. I wish he showed the process of moving the whole shifter assembly thing, but I'll work it out I suppose. Great video, learned a lot.

    Thank you Barry once again for the best review I think Fanatec should give you the CSW base free of charge.
    One thing you for got to do is attached your Quick Release from Holger Bochfink so you can change your wheel with out bolting and unbolting them.

    • @simracinggarage3026
      @simracinggarage3026  10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      If were going to keep using the CSW instead of my Bodnar, have no fear the Holger Q1R system would be installed! BTW, I don't accept free hardware to review. I either buy it, like the CSW base and Hub, or someone can send me their hardware with the expectation that I will return it once the review is completed. Unless of course, if I want to keep it. In that case I would pay them for it. I know most other reviewers get free samples for their reviews, but I don't know of any other way to keep my reviews honest, and as unbiased as possible.

  • @ZinhoLabs
    @ZinhoLabs 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a head's up: You don't necessary have to switch an arrow on an encoder to top position, the encoder will work anyway, only "reversed" (up/down and left/right). You may get a little confused in the wheel menu at first, but "in game" it works just fine, because you use physical direction, the directions subscribed to the buttons doesn't matter (I hope you understand, what I mean). I already got used to mine, and never switched the arrow position ;)
    As to switching rims... Yes, hub is not meant to do that, it is meant to be attached to one rim, not only because it takes time to switch wheels, but also you have to consider repositioning of buttonboxes. With the new quick-release you only have to pay attention to the 5 allen screws inside the steering column, they tend to come loose, and the wheel "wobbles" more. Easy fix. I personally have some OMP replica with my hub, and planning to get Formula Carbon rim (looking forward to some discounts/black fridays etc. :P).
    Quick question to mr. Barry: When can we expect a review of ClubSport Pedals V3? :)

    This is an excellent review. I just found this channel and am a new sub. I recently ordered my V2 base and have a few more weeks before it arrives and can't decide on what wheel I should get. Would you recommend this hub and a custom wheel over the BMW GT2 wheel or the Porsche 918 wheel? I like the fact the hub is easy to customize to your liking so I'm kinda leaning towards that direction. Thanks

    • @realtrisk
      @realtrisk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CDubLDD The only negative that I can see on this is it lacks the second joystick built into the 918 and BMW GT2. The joystick is useful because you can emulate a mouse with it, and never have to take your hands off the wheel to reach for the mouse. Other than that, I think it really just comes down to what you think would be cooler... although the BMW GT2 is heavy, so it absorbs a noticeable amount of feedback detail as the base has to move that heavy chunk of metal. Not a huge deal, and it still feels fantastic, but lighter wheels have noticeably more power and detail when mounted up. Then again, if you don't like running with FF maxed, this isn't going to matter to you anyway... just turn it up a squidge more to compensate.

    Hi Barry, great video! I had a question about the SMC pod/wheel plate. Could you show us how the USB is connected to your computer? Does the cable get in the way when steering? How long is the cable and how is it routed? Thanks!

    • @simracinggarage3026
      @simracinggarage3026  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christophertsou I use a USB extension cord that comes from the computer port. Then I have a coiled USB "A to B" cord from the extension to the wheel. Never had an issue with this set up. I've had the wheel make 3 complete revolutions without any problem because of the coiled USB cord. Of course there are limitations to how many revolutions the wheel can make before the cord would pull out from the extension. Really a non issue in every day Sim Racing.

    Hi Barry
    Just a quick question, you say you could of removed the shifter spacers to bring the paddles in more, this maybe a stupid question but is it possible to move the spacers to the other side to make them even more inward towards the wheel rim? Instead of just removing all together as you recommend. Another great video so thank you.

    • @simracinggarage3026

      Yes, you could move them to the inside also as long a your fingers still have enough room between the paddles.

    Hello Sim Racing Garage... Thank you for making some great and informative videos on sim racing products. One question. Does the MOMO wheel weigh as much as the average sim racing wheel of its equivalence? In other words is the MOMO wheel not much heavier or lighter then say the equivalent Fanatec wheel? Also, is that MOMO wheel dressed in Alcantara or suede? Thanks.

    • @simracinggarage3026

    • @simracinggarage3026

      No, didn't bother with weighing them. Fanantec's site puts the Hub with all the button pods, funky switch, led display, shifter pods, large shifter paddles, and mounting brackets, which they call "levers", at 959grams. So just add your wheel weight for the total.

    Could you not reverse the paddle shifts as well to make them even closer, mount the left on the right and right on left back to front ? In fact looking at it you could mount the paddle lever the other side with those spacers the other side to bring them closer again without needing to flip left to right, I think, looking forward to testing this stuff out when it arrives :)

    • @Dresified
      @Dresified 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah he mounted the paddles on the wrong sides. The spacers are supposed to face the wheel. Like in the picture you can see on the fanatec software shown in the video.

    • @simracinggarage3026
      @simracinggarage3026  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you could flip them and switch them to opposing side. But you will still need to flip the paddles on the brackets to get the all smooth side behind the bracket where you fingers will be making contact while shifting. If that still doesn't bring the paddles close enough, you can use the extra shifter pod mounting holes on the side of the hub casing.

    • @simracinggarage3026
      @simracinggarage3026  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shannon Phillips
      Actually, they are mounted correctly. The software driver just shows the paddles, not the proper orientation. If you go to the Fanantec USA site and look at the pictures of the hub you can see this. It makes sense really, if you think about it. You want the smooth face of the paddle facing away from you, as you will be pulling the paddle toward you when shifting.

  • @saintvallen123
    @saintvallen123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding reaching the paddles, I suppose you could also flip them to the other side, which would also give you some more reach - although the paddle wouldn't be flat anymore due to the bracket, but it would be significantly closer
    Seeing this hub being a thing for Fanatec makes me want to ditch thrustmaster..

  • @2testtest2
    @2testtest2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I realize I'm 5 years late, but could you not get the padle shifters an other ~12mm closer by mounting the left one on the right and vice versa? That would put the spacers on the other side, and reverse the L shape of the mounting bracket, if it works.

    This is exactly the kind of review I was looking for, thank you so much!. One thing...Is it possible for you to test your wheels (especially in terms of FFB testing) using rFactor 2? RFactor 2's FFB is probably the best in the business, it is extremely dynamic, raw, "alive", and just overall thrilling.
    RFactor 2 is probably the best sim we currently have in terms of testing a wheel's FFB to it's max potential.

    Barry i noticed on the fanatec site they show a mobile phone attached to the hub, was this an option or is it an extra thing to buy ?
    nice review by the way

      You have to buy the mobile phone attachment separate. I looked on the Fanantec USA site and couldn't find one to order.

      ***** is that december 2015 ? only i have already spoken to someone at Fanatec who informed me that it has yet to be designed.....so curious how you can even give a year without a finished product ?

      ***** eu.fanatec.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=75&product_id=768 as you can see they are still showing the phone attachment, but i was also told by a fanatec staff member that it would be removed until it's available, but that was over a month ago now....oh and Walter....your english is just fine :)

    You could have put the paddle shifters closer to the wheel by putting the washers and paddles mounted in front of the braket insted of behind.

    Can I ask a couple of Q's here to see if SRG or anybody else can help me out please.... When removing buttons from the circuit board, what is the best way to go about it? It does not really say anything in the guide about removing them and they seem like they are positioned really soild, iam a little worried about damaging them as this is pretty pricey kit for me. I don't want any buttons on for when I buy a classic wooden rim. Also... Are the any ways of attaching rims that don't have the standard 6 screw holes where one is positioned at the top and the bottom like the rims in this video and all the ones Fanatec sell... Ive seen a few on ebay that iam tempted to buy (mainly classic ones) but the 6 screws are positioned 3 to each side. Is the any way around that? Please don't give no smart ass comments if any of this I obvious stuff :) - Real help much appreciated.

      We won't be doing a base review, as there are many reviews already out there. Now, when they come out with a new one, then you'll see a review of it here.

      Thank You for answer. If there will be another CSW related review on this channel, please consider to include Your thoughts on CSW base and how it compares to other high end wheels. There are reviews out there, but those reviewers don't have a lot high end wheel experience and access to them (ISRTV, SimRacingReview etc).

    I the fanatec v2 worth upgrade from t500? I will be using my momo

    • @simracinggarage3026
      @simracinggarage3026  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Kyle Schraw Only you can make that call. I can say the CSW V2 is more powerful than the T500, so it will be able to handle your MOMO wheel a bit better. If you can afford it, I would go with the Accuforce or OSW kit. You would have all the power and much better quality FFB, with the OSW being the better of the two.

    for the money I'd expect rev leds and better push buttons with some nice colors ... not the dull colors Fanatec seems to like so much ... button colors are supposed to stick out ... otherwise it looks like a nice piece o sim hardware :)

    Would you recommend this Universal hub to fit with a Momo Mod27c? (www.momousa.com/racing/steering-wheels/mod-27c.html)

    Schönes Video. Es ist jedoch deutlich einfacher erst die Button Boxen an die Platte zu schrauben und dann erst die Stecker in den Hub zu stecken.
    Sry bad english...the better way is
    first - connect Button Boxes to the plate
    second - connect the cables on the Hub

    Will this fit a sparco nascar wheel?

    • @simracinggarage3026
      @simracinggarage3026  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Sparco Nascar Wheel has a proprietary bolt pattern. So it will not fit this hub's industry standard 70mm and 50.8mm bolt patterns. You could drill and tap your own holes, or source an adapter. Another issue would be the reach to the shifter paddles and buttons being very long because of the deep dish on the Nascar style wheels.
