    I've been kicked and kneed in the hip repeatedly in three no shield sparring sessions in a row the same week and started having the most annoying pain and can't have pants on ever since. And now thanks to you guys i know what it is, a "tensor fascia latae" injury! I woke up at night every night for a week and couldn't walk stand, sit or do anything without discomfort since then. Today it has been two weeks of recovery and it is my fist day i am almost pain free. Thanks for making this informative video! 😁👍 I'm taking one more week of recovery then coming back stronger. But I learned my lesson and will be shielding that area much better and will take some recovery time when needed.

    I’d love to see a tutorial on how to do the low kick!! I notice that high level martial artists like Gabe tend to “crouch down” when they fire the right low round kick. I’m trying to understand how to generate power as well as have a quick recovery and maintain balance throughout.

    • @GabrielVargaOfficial
      @GabrielVargaOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +147

      When you crouch you move your head off the centre line.

    Another thing that can help with low kick conditioning before you can feel good taking them directly is holding a pad or kick shield on your thigh while someone else blasts it at full power. It's a common drill at my gym to take turns holding for 10 kicks each, then 9, then 8, etc., and then switching which leg we're kicking with to start over. I had massive bruises the first couple times I did that, but it doesn't phase me anymore despite often partnering with people who have a clear size advantage on me.

    That was absolutely brilliant guys! We incorporate this into our training at my karate club and it works. I was in Gatineau for a seminar a couple years back and the guy teaching the seminar was a Muay Thai instructor. We ended off the seminar with him and I exchanging leg kicks and after like 2 or 3 I was done. Then when I went back to my dojo in Toronto I asked some of my training partners if I could exchange with them and tried to do it on a regular basis and I actually got better at it.👍🏽

  • @angeljimenez9909
    @angeljimenez9909 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Amazing video! My brother suffered a MCL sprain from a heel hook during rolling. So we are working hard with physical therapy to rebuild stability in the knee. However we don't want to lose stability in his knee via leg kicks a la Kevin Lee vs Diego Sanchez, so this technique of countering hard with punch combinations into a clinch engagement can really help mitigate the amount of leg kicks we need to take/check.

    • @moustachio334
      @moustachio334 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. The best counter to a low kick is a right cross. That’s why when I teach low kicks at the end of punching combinations. Never throw a naked low kick and land square like Shane is doing (of course Shane is just practicing a drill and it doesn’t matter if he angles off or not).

    TFL does flexion, but MAINLY abduction (lifting the leg upwards) and internal rotation (imagine rotating your femur, the leg bone counterclockwise) a lot of kickboxers have OVERdeveloped TFL muscles because it's basically the roundhouse kick muscle, it flexes (chambers) then it internally rotates (puts the shin into the cutting angle), then when you turn your hips it helps with abduction and stabilizes the leg through the motion)

    If opponent kicks to your calf of your leg, you pop your front leg up into a front snap kick/teep into their solar plexus (or groin in self defense situation). The opponent's low kick misses, leaving them off balance.
    If opponent kicks to your thigh, you leg check with toes pointed slightly inward, using both bones and the meat of your lower leg to check. You can also parry with your hand if you are fast enough, but this is not "preferred".

    Kicking at the hip also affects the ilopsoas area and one of the major drawbacks is nausea. It sucks.

    QUESTION: is damaging the knee joint a concern if you’re constantly taking leg kicks above the knee for conditioning?

      I've never had issues with my knees (except in jiu-jitsu).
      I don't think there should be much movement around the knee joint while taking the kick. And hopefully they aren't kicking 1-2 inches above the near but more like the middle of the thigh.

    Is there a way to condition your Legs without a Partner, for example with a Kettlebell? I trained MuayThai in the past but know i just train Grappling and do my MuayThai Training by my own, Just to maintain the technique. I do shin and knuckle conditioning but really would Like to condition my Legs too.
    Thank You 🙏🏼

      I guess anything that replicates low kick impact will work.

      I asked Gabriel about that tonight and in fact Stephen Thompson was invited and would have been there as well but he is in training camp for his next upcoming fight. I would imagine you will see him there next time around.

    How do you protect from knee injuries if the kick lands on the outside of the knee instead of the thigh?

    • @yotornadoyo
      @yotornadoyo ปีที่แล้ว

      Just turn your leg out a bit when the kick is coming and he will land on your knee and hurt himself.

    When he said "ok, now a few at 100%" I thought Shane's face said "dude, I was there three kicks ago."
    Gabriel Varga must be the most affable and friendly completely terrifying person on the planet
