Who is still struggling to get fluid kicks at head level? I truly believe you CAN kick high. Just remember to work proper technique, build hip strength and use proper stretches daily.
If you didn't learn this as a kid or teen it maybe more difficult but it's doable. This is exactly how you do it. Get a stretch machine foe doing splits as well.
This is fantastic, I'll def be using this at home. really helpful video, I can headkick with my left leg but v little power. I'm interested to see how much I can improve over the next month or so.
question if i can ask, so does the feet have to be flat on the floor, and i take it you need a straight back ? sorry if this is a stupid question, but i dont know :-) thanks for an amazing channel Regards Michael Weber
@dubs15 I'll reply for Gabe until he does. Your feet need to be on the balls of your feet. Not flat. When you throw the round house you pivot on the balls of your feet and shift your weight from the center to the front leg. Once the round house is thrown with either the ball of your foot making contact or your instep, you may pull it back quickly or your may follow through spinning 360 dg for full power. Gabe is going to say pull it back for practice purposes. He is right, muay Thai will follow through generally instead where the focus is power. Your more important stretches for this kick are as he has shown and Also the running man stretch and lunge stretch also putting your face to the floor near your front foot making sure to have the knee perfectly at 90 dg. Hope that helps. There is also the muay Thai technique of not pivoting the front foot and instead opening your hips and turning them over putting flex strain on your stationary leg. This is faster and less telegraphed and requires alot of practice.
I am 61 and have been doing Muay Thai for about 3 years. I could never kick above waist level with my round kicks. Your techniques in this video helped me kick to neck level with good form for the first time. Thank you very much.
I have seen some really tough guys doing them in public and belive me you dont want to mess with them, they do it all day and yell, they dont give a fuck
Just a couple of weeks ago I started doing splits to improve my kick height, but I was unsure about how to go on improving, so I'm gonna implement all these techniques on my training starting today. Thank you Gabriel!
@Synion I'm actually thinking of doing splits as well, to improve the range and height of my kicks. Are you doing side- or front splits? And do you feel like doing splits has made a difference? I am very curious.

@@RageForSeven 175 lbs as of this morning's weigh. I was actually gaining back a few pounds which made me cut breakfast out altogether. Once I stopped eating bread, I could feel my body changing. It was holding on to the carbs. So, I started drinking lemon water with tumeric and black pepper.
Getting back into training/sparring at 40, this is going to be a HUGE help for me! Really appreciate all of the time and effort you put into this channel, - all of the info, exercises, drills, and training tips have been invaluable in getting back into the sport.
Same, only 38 but that flexibility really is an issue and following Vargas advice has helped a lot when working on enabling better kicking mobility. Still takes a *lot* of time and effort to regain the strength and mobility necessary for higher kicks.
Hey, young ones! ;) Turned 42 on September 26th and just started Thai boxing after a 20 years break. From beeing really flexible to feel like an oak tree that not even a hurricane can bend.
The timing of this video is impeccable. Drilled kicking techniques in my kickboxing class today but left still feeling like there’s so much to improve on. Would love to see that long video for opening up the hips, building mobility from hips and kicking techniques. Will continue to use this video to improve my high kicks! Thanks so much for your explanations Gabriel! Been doing your abs drill daily and have seen so many improvements in strength and overall form in class.
I’m training Muay Thai for almost a year, I’m 31 and my hip flexors are still terrible, I feel like I never improved in a year. My skills have been much better if it’s about elbows, knees and low kick, but I can’t even land a correct round house. I will carefully follow your routine every single day. I am under shock the practice on the floor was crazy painful. Thank you so much!
I started doing some of those hip openers just incidentally with some yoga practice and they really do get to the root of the problem, at least for me. I do a lot of sitting both as a student and now working. Both internal and external rotation of the hip gets so limited because the hip joint itself is like a rock. If you're a runner, you build this in when you run. The activity drives that tightness because it promotes stability of the leg when you're very tired. But that also means that if we're going to loosen all of that up, you really do need strong legs and glutes supporting the joints. This specific movements are fantastic and really do help! 2nd degree TKD black belt here.

I love your channel. Of all the martial arts channels on TH-cam, I feel like yours is the most legit and practical. You have that wall of credentials behind you to prove you know what you’re talking about.
Thank you so much for this video, I am mid forties and have been training Krav Maga for the past 9 years, in all that time I have had a goal to achieve a head height round house kick. I have been stretching 4 - 5 times a week, using the strengthening excersises you have in another video, have watched every high kick TH-cam video, but could never get above chest height. Well this evening I reached my goal, I used the shoulder technique you suggested and managed a right (weak) roundhouse to my own head height. I am delighted, thank you sir. Now to work on the left side.
Hi, just found your video and tried it out firs time. I have been in kick and Thai boxing for almost 30 years and yet, I learned from you so much again. Your way of teaching is great. I will do this daily as you suggested. Please put up more of these kinds of videos. God bless.
Thanks so much for this video. My hip flexibility and strength - really my whole lower body mobility - is my biggest fitness weakpoint. I am going to start doing these exercises today!
Hi, just wanted to give a big shout-out for hooking me up with this condensed gem. Seriously appreciate the fresh approach to teaching my students, especially those who aren't as fit as the younger crew. Much love and thanks! 🥋🇵🇭
Thank you so much for your advice! I'm 29 and i always had the problem that i'm really unflexible. I startet this month with jogging and weight lifting and i just noticed how unflexible i am when i stretched after my workouts. Those kicks are a thing of beauty, i hope i'll manage to kick to maybe chest height one day.
As a M.A guy, (not professional),I want wholeheartedly thank you for this video. I tried a lot of stretching, kicking drills etc. But still could not kick head level for prolonged times. I am so going to train in this method. Thank you again.
Exactly what I needed. Amazing ? 20 years ago I was able to do it naturally without effort or thinking. Now that I've resume practicing kick boxing, I had difficulties to kick high even though my body can do it. Thanks a lot.
You touched on several points that have held me back. One, I can get my pelvis fairly close to the floor if my knees are bent at a 90 degree angle. But when I straighten my knees (legs), I can't come close to reaching the floor. I thought it was just tight hamstrings or adductor muscles. And you are right about being able to get a wide hip spread in one direction but when you move your position you lose height. That low squat position you show where you move both knees to a side is gold for loosening up your hips to keep your kicks high in all directions. Where were you 60 years ago when I was 20? But at 20, a guy is so loose naturally that most can kick at least chest high without too much trouble.
I have osteoarthritis in both hips I used to do muay thai and since stopping find my hips are so tight. I will try this and see how I go thanks so much, I think yoga helps a little but this may push the boundaries to a better flexibility. Much appreciated. 😊
I do boxing a lot. Recently transitioned to kickboxing, I'm more flexible than average, I try to do flexibility drills every day. But never could get that leg over my stomach height. That shoulder movement you taught made a whole world of difference. I can kick almost head height almost immediately
Gabriel your Van Damme kick videos are money. I can throw head kicks already, but my control is so much better even on spin-kicks I have more control. I incorporate the drills into my dynamic effort days. Good stuff!

Alright! Timely as I feel this is like the last thing I need. I keep getting told I'm kicking like kickball at the gym I go to. 🤣 Will try this for 50 days. My biggest issue is hip pain. Like a groin pain when pointing my knees out, feet together for instance. Working on movements and strength techniques for that.
I'm 45, and I've been really inflexible in my groin, hips, and hamstrings since my 14yo growth spurt. I have tried a lot of stretches and exercises with little improvement. I brought these exercises into my training and I was able to kick head level for the first time in my life after a week. Not super fast or powerful, but I'll take it. Thanks Gabriel!

I have two cues that help me turn my shoulders: 1. Turn your head to look behind you as you kick - I don't like to do it during sparring, but it helps me to get used to turning my shoulders when I'm on a bag 2. Reach out and touch your opponent's shoulder e.g. kicking with your right leg, you reach out with your right hand and touch their right shoulder
Definitely noticed improvements. Thank you so much for the video. One problem I’m having is, I can’t fully extend my extend leg straight once I get my knee up high. All my leg muscles feel tight and there’s so much resistance
I couldn’t do a high kick. Until I realized that pivoting is not just your heal or your foot. YOU’RE MOVING THE ENTIRE LEG. *maybe that’s obvious idrk I’m self taught for now so* So a pivot is actually just that twist of the support leg. Anyway. I can do high kicks now. Cheerio.
I took karate(Wado Ryu) got a black belt. I could do splits. Now I am doing kickboxing with my personal trainer every week. It is hard for me to do middle or higher kicks. I would love more mobility exercises & I have tight hips too. Thanks for your exercises
cant wait to try this... ive never been able to do high kicks even when I was younger, if this works for me it will work for anyone believe me... will report back soon...tks
Wow I Excellent video. Eye-opening. Pinpoints the problem with precisely the stretching exercise needed. It hits the nail on the heard. Not only that but you also show how the shoulder, and the hip must flow together.
I didn't have great flexibility, kickboxing and taekwondo helped. At the beginning I tore muscles on the inside of both thighs but I was able to kick height. Had a hiatus back in training again and this video reasserts a lot of the techniques I learnt. Cheers Gabriel. Oss 👍
Love your videos Gabriel, no nonsense straight to the point, pure valuable information. It takes many years to build up all this knowledge in practice, knowing what is the best method, what to spend your time on. Respect.
4:14 have to give Gabe props, not every man is brave enough to do the frogger on TH-cam 😅. I'll have to try your technique at 3:20. You always have great stretching for tight hips.
4:34 Did this on my vacation in the resorts gym as I wanted to hit the bag. I got arrested and kicked out and lost my job in Medicine. Then my wife left with the kids and she's about to get the house in the divorce. Thanks Gabriel
That's awesome - I started practicing kicks again last week and I will definitely use this. I'm p sure I have the hip flexibility of someone 2x my age so the stretches might be a better place to start...
How to do the stretch at 3:37 if I can't get the feet apart at all? And when I rotate and collapse the knees my body has to move back. I need my hands on ground to support or else I will just fall on the ground while rotating knees side to side!
I have nearly the same question. I can spread my legs apart but I can't collapse my knees completely down without turning my body so much that I need to use my hands for support. If I try to keep the technique strict like in this video it's like I hit a mobility limit at about 45 degrees. I'm assuming this should improve with time but would love to hear from anyone that knows otherwise.
Who is still struggling to get fluid kicks at head level?

Definitely noticed improvements. Thank you so much for the video. One problem I’m having is, I can’t fully extend my extend leg straight once I get my knee up high. All my leg muscles feel tight and there’s so much resistance
I couldn’t do a high kick. Until I realized that pivoting is not just your heal or your foot. YOU’RE MOVING THE ENTIRE LEG. *maybe that’s obvious idrk I’m self taught for now so* So a pivot is actually just that twist of the support leg. Anyway. I can do high kicks now. Cheerio.
Great video, my kicks are becoming more stable and powerful
I'm a hobbyist so I appreciate a lot the condensed exercises 😁
This video is very helpful to me as a beginner. Your videos are worthy to watch and practice. Thank you for providing good content.
From Pakistan
Appreciate the video champ. Very informative & has helped me so much on my journey
I took karate(Wado Ryu) got a black belt. I could do splits. Now I am doing kickboxing with my personal trainer every week. It is hard for me to do middle or higher kicks. I would love more mobility exercises & I have tight hips too. Thanks for your exercises
Thank you, I've been trying for a year and almost there, this should help a lot.
Will be happy with a waist kick haha. Thanks for the info, gonna start this today
This is the video I needed to see, thank you!
cant wait to try this... ive never been able to do high kicks even when I was younger, if this works for me it will work for anyone believe me... will report back soon...tks
Great tips! Just what I needed. I added these to my workout.
Wow I Excellent video. Eye-opening. Pinpoints the problem with precisely the stretching exercise needed. It hits the nail on the heard. Not only that but you also show how the shoulder, and the hip must flow together.
Thank you for the no BS, high quality content coach!
You bet
I didn't have great flexibility, kickboxing and taekwondo helped. At the beginning I tore muscles on the inside of both thighs but I was able to kick height. Had a hiatus back in training again and this video reasserts a lot of the techniques I learnt. Cheers Gabriel. Oss 👍
Love your videos Gabriel, no nonsense straight to the point, pure valuable information. It takes many years to build up all this knowledge in practice, knowing what is the best method, what to spend your time on. Respect.
Perfect. That's what I'm going for
Will start follow routine and post Progress.. At current I can kick knee level.. Am 45 years old..
so, where is the "Progress"? If any?

7:33 "That's head level!"
True, I can headkick the teenagers in our dojo 🙂
Best Video I have ever seen to this subject.
Thanks a lot. I will train this every day!! ❤
Thank you sir it really helps
4:14 have to give Gabe props, not every man is brave enough to do the frogger on TH-cam 😅. I'll have to try your technique at 3:20. You always have great stretching for tight hips.
Excellent video man, exactly what i ws looking forward
4:34 Did this on my vacation in the resorts gym as I wanted to hit the bag. I got arrested and kicked out and lost my job in Medicine. Then my wife left with the kids and she's about to get the house in the divorce. Thanks Gabriel
Would like to see this routine supplemented with exercises for balance. I fall over when I do this.
Good clear instruction , top notch !
Set this as your home page, it reminds you to do stretching, and helps out Gab's at the same time :) x
Bless you, buddy!
This is a great video, really good advice
