    I worked in a tropical rainforest and was bombarded daily with mosquitoes. The best thing I've found for reducing the itch of a mosquito bite is rubbing alcohol. Although it only works if you get to it soon after being bitten. The alcohol denatures the proteins of the mosquito saliva (recognized as foreign by your body). Heat also works to denature these proteins, but I find rubbing alcohol to be much easier. Even just a dab of hand sanitizer works!

      Yes! My mom always had me make an X on the bug bite, and spray a cologne , or put rubbing alcohol on it. Not sure pressing an X onto a bug bite was a great idea, but it worked!

    The Aquaphor itch relief ointment is the best anti-itch remedy I've found at the drugstore. I think the occlusive base keeps it from drying down too quickly which helps to deactivate the itch. 👍

    This was so great! My son is getting ready to head off to basic training in Georgia for the summer. They are very strict about medicated products, but he could do foot powder and Vaselines. This is great so he can understand things he can do to prevent as much of the stuff that you talked about and maybe treat it the best he can! Thanks Dr Dray!!!

    For those looking for an alternative to DEET (which has an excellent safety track record but has some downsides like melting plastic) picaridin (or icaridin depending on where you are) has been working wonderfully for me for the last 2 years and hasn’t ruined my glasses like DEET would. And head nets, as “fashionable” as they are, are also great.

    • @321morlan4
      @321morlan4 ปีที่แล้ว

    On a plane with my six yo daughter from CA to MD, she started to break out in chicken pox. By the time we got to MD the breakouts had multiplied. Hiiii, Good day Dr.☺️
    It's been a while but can you continue addressing the topic of applying estrogen as a face cream particularly for skin suffering from hormonal acne and whether or not that may cause some side effects, especially for young girls who are only doing this as a cure for their acne? I figured since we already have the Winlevi cream as the anti-androgen solution for hormonal acne, we might as well apply estrogen-promoting cream on our face as well🧐

    If for any reason, people don't want to put a steroid cream on a bug bite, a friend told me to use a thick paste of water and baking soda, and apply it to the bite. It does soothe the itch and is perhaps a bit more safe than a steroid.

    Hi Dr. Dray. I’ve been following your videos regularly and I love them. All the information you give has really helped me achieve a minimalistic skin care routine that’s suiting me well. I do have cholinergic urticaria that causes itchy hives on my face- around eyes and behind the ears leading to swelling as well. Can any of the above products be used for relieving them?

    • @nadab4750
      @nadab4750 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, I really sympathise with you, as I had hives for the first time earlier in the year...and inconveniently during Valentine's Day! They were mainly on my torso and lower legs. I didn't know what it was at first, freaking out whilst Googling my symptoms. My GP said that the hives were probably due to long COVID. To treat it, I just used an insect bite anti- itch cream that I already had in my cabinet. I covered them with multiple bandaids and then applied a cold freezer pack on top, so it wouldn't touch my skin directly...and so that I wouldn't scratch my skin to shreds. I was concerned about the dark marks that remained after hives subsided; so I have been applying hydroquinone cream to help fade the discolouration. My skin tone is light so the purplish marks were obvious. They are almost gone now, but look worse when my legs are cold. Especially seeing that you have had hives on your face, you should consider getting a hydroquinone prescription from your GP (if you can't buy it OTC) to help fade the lingering evidence. I use fragrance free Dove to wash my body (CeraVe fragrance free cleanser for my face) and the CeraVe moisturiser in the tub to keep the skin on my body hydrated and to prevent irritation of any kind. I especially didn't want to irritate the skin further by using products containing (natural or synthetic) fragrance anywhere near where I had the hives. Remember to always apply sunscreen to help the marks to fade faster and to keep your skin barrier healthy. Good luck!

    I don't spray DEET on my skin, but I do use it on my clothes and if I'm in a heavy tick or mosquito area, I wear long sleeves, long pants, tuck pants into socks and spray the DEET spray on my clothing, not on my skin. On my neck and hands and face/hair, I use a "natural" bug spray, not the DEET kind. Seems to work well. ("natural" meaning it has essential oils that bugs don't like, rather than DEET)

    Hello Dr Dray, I'm really hoping that you can advise me please. I've recently heard/read that many Mineral Sunscreens are not in fact 100% mineral as claimed because they contain unregulated chemical filters (Butyloctyl Salicylate, Tridecyl Salicylate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycrylene, Undecylcrylene Dimethicone, Diethylhexyl Syringylidene Malonate and Benzotriazolyl Dodecyl P-cresol) which are structurally similar to such chemical filters as Octisalate, Octocrylene and Octinoxate. This really concerns me. My usual Mineral Sunscreen has just been discontinued and I am now finding it almost impossible to find a replacement as they all seem to contain one of those filters. Many thanks indeed for your help.

    The hydrocortisone creams dont work on me. I find the cerave red itch cream works beautifully if i can use it promptly. I blow up from bites and am on various meds for allergies already. This prevents the itching and then allows it to heal faster.

    I have permanent makeup eyebrows & have been told by sunscreen companies that you can NOT and should NOT blend in the physical sunscreen too much or you will undo the SPF. It has to sit on the skin/brows to do its job. Well, that would mean I have white brows if I could not blend it in, and chemical is not an option because my eyes sting to death if I get chemical sunscreens anywhere NEAR my eyes (unless there are some that don't do this that I don't know of). Can you recommend one?
    SPF 30 probably won't protect as well as SPF 50. Thanks!!!!

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a powder sunscreen just around my eyes (from the orbital bone to the eyebrows, basically) for the similar reasons. Couldn't find a chemical sunscreen, my eyes will tolerate and with liquid mineral sunscreen, I can't wear mascara. It always smudges within the hour, because mineral sunscreens tend to be very heavy and just don't absorb at all into my oily skin.
      I know sunscreen powder isn't ideal and I certainly wouldn't use it all over my face - there is a slight cakey look, if you apply enough to provide coverage (which I would assume you have to, for it to be effective), but I figure, it's better than nothing.
      And I tend to wear s hat when outside in the sun, anyways, so that area rarely gets direct sun exposure anyways.

    Dr. Dray!
    Do you have a recommendation for sunscreen for sensitive skin? I’ve tried the Neutrogena sunscreens (with no fragrance) and some others. For some reason, I seem to have an allergic reaction to all of them. Is it possible to be allergic to the active or other ingredients in sunscreen?… I have very sensitive skin, like to the point where I should be living in bubble.

So much cheaper & easier and I never get stinky anymore. I only use the almay antiperspirant for important occasions, lol, I havent had breakthru stink in a long time, 3x a week of Benz peroxide (2.5%×2, 10%×1) in the pits (and thighs, as I have recurrent staph boils) does the trick!

    Called the health line and was told it wasn't to server and was told healing time would be 3-5 weeks and eye drops i could get.
    Moisturizer and sunscreen sting like crazy when applied to the burn. Im wondering if I should just avoid putting any products there, tell it heals or if something I can put on it. without it felling burning thru me
