  • Just a day visit to the Rio Grande Gorge Orilla Verde Recreation Area south of Taos, New Mexico to check out the camping we had heard so much about. The 6 campgrounds are all part of BLM and a fee is charged. There is NO dispersed camping, only at marked sites, which are few. All camping is first come, first serve so during Peak summer months, sites stay full.
The area is a busy recreation area for fishing and kayaking, as well as hiking with many trails. Wildlife - there are bighorn sheep in the canyon but we did not see any the day we were there. It is a nice area we plan to visit in the off-season, maybe early Spring.

I forgot to mention that this camping area is open year round as long as weather does not affect the roads.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them here! We will get back to you as soon as possible.

It's a beautiful place to camp and fish. Love it. I have to check the reservation. Thanks.

HI. I don't think any of the campgrounds take reservations, it looked like all were just first come. If you find differently, let me know. Thanks for watching.

hi, you need to drive north from I-40 on I-25 and then Hwy 84/285 to Espanola, then follow signs to Taos on hwy 68. You turn north (left) into Orilla Verde at the Rio Grande Visitor Center in Pilar, just before reaching Taos.

It is a very large area, several miles long so it would be best for you to just google it by the name.
