  • Come ask Greg the Lawyer all your legal questions about publishing for Shadowdark RPG in this livestream!
    Greg and I are going to discuss how to use the Shadowdark RPG Third-Party License V1.1 to make your own material that you can publish royalty free. AKA I don't get any of the profits, ya hear!
    I want you to feel confident when you publish material for Shadowdark, and that starts with explaining how the legal stuff works. We tried to keep the license very simple and as open as possible.
    *Disclaimer that Greg is not your lawyer, and this isn't legal counsel, only a discussion that should not be construed as legal advice! Greg will be glad I said that, I'm sure.
    The most recent version of the license is available here: www.dropbox.co...
    🔥 Here is the written FAQ resulting from this Live AMA! We'll update it over time as more questions emerge: www.thearcanel...

    Thank you for this! I work in Finance and have to read ALOT of fine print in policies and contracts. It is always refreshing to read a license that is succinct, protects your awesome intellectual property, and allows others to profit creating content to enrich your game. This is great educational content, Greg the Gaming Lawyer gets a big thumbs up for helping the community understand how this works.

    So... the next time Greg is talking, I'd like to hear his opinion of how much in the OGL and CC from the Lawful Evil Corp actually is artistic items "owned" by Lawful Evil Corp vs how much of the OGL/CC SRD is just game mechanics which they don't own anyway.

    Once people add 15 different dual wielding feats, 50 more classes, and 1000 more pages of miscellaneous rules, is it ok for me to do a Shadowark Lite which cuts all that shit out and makes the game lean, mean, and fast again? :)

    • @samuelcheung5664
      @samuelcheung5664 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you can state something like "This game/campaign/product is compatible with Shadowdark RPG Rule Book v2.0...". Also, the Arcane Library may need to start managing the Shadowdark Rules version now.

    • @TheArcaneLibrary
      @TheArcaneLibrary  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahahahaha! The core rulebook will always be the base game. To me, that is "Shadowdark Lite." Anything outside of it can be ignored and the game will remain whole/able to stand entirely on its own.

    • @TheArcaneLibrary
      @TheArcaneLibrary  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The license itself is the only version that matters! So long as it's printed in the book, the material in that book is usable by that license. So I could print Shadowdark 2E, and if it has the same license (V1.1) printed in it, then all that material is usable under those license terms.

    Is it irrevocable?

    • @TheArcaneLibrary
      @TheArcaneLibrary  ปีที่แล้ว

      We go into this in the video! :) Essentially yes, it is irrevocable, although Greg goes into legal nuance that is important to understand. "Irrevocable" on its own isn't a single, broad-use concept.
      A license can be on offer (available), and whether that offer can be pulled back is more the concept folks probably mean when we're talking about revocability. The way we are publishing the third-party license means that it will always be on offer, and that specific offer can't be pulled back.

    • @NemoOhd20
      @NemoOhd20 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really hate the way he answered this. The fact is any offer CAN be revoked. Can it be revoked effectively? Maybe not. If you have a copy of Shadowdark on a desert island and don't know it was revoked, can you produce under the OGL, probably. The only way to get a truly irrevocable license is to buy one. Even $1 is adequate consideration but a gift such as a free license in the OGL really isn't irrevocable. Once you offer consideration for the license, the deal is done.
      Realistically though, I have every belief that Kelsey WILL NOT revoke the OGL. It's in her best interested. Producing thing smaller products is expensive, talent is expensive, and it's a gamble. So allowing people to produce is actually cost effective for a company, because they make the real money is made off of the core rules and (they think) the future electronic offerings of all sorts. Moreover I don't think Kelsey & friends need an OGL crisis like Evil Wizards did to figure out how much it would hurt their position.
      We are so blessed to have Kelsey and her friends producing this for us. It makes me happy about the future of fantasy gaming from a new generation.

      @@NemoOhd20 it's all a bit oblique

    • @TheArcaneLibrary
      @TheArcaneLibrary  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NemoOhd20 I think the point Greg is getting at is that I can't revoke the offer of the license itself once published. It will always exist and can't be revoked by a single, sudden declaration on my part.
      Whether or not that was possible with the OGL 1.0a is up for debate, but in either case, we don't believe legally that it's possible for me to do that with this license. The offer is a part of the work (book) itself, so as long as the book exists, the offer exists.

    • @TheArcaneLibrary
      @TheArcaneLibrary  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jnlsnfamily8747 No attempt at obfuscation here! I think Greg answered it from a bird's eye view. This license is being released as a part of the book itself, so I can't just get up one day and say all the works published under it are no longer authorized and the license is no longer on offer. Neither could happen, as long as the book exists.
