  • I have been watching LEGO videos on TH-cam since 2012. Over the last ten-and-a-half years I have seen a plethora of creators come-and-go, and during that time I have witnessed the ways content has changed in the LEGO community. I hope you enjoy this mini-documentary on: The History of LEGO TH-cam

    Reviews will never die, as they are basically the only actually relevant type of LEGO vids, whereas the rest is entertainment. But I do feel that market is saturated as well as polluted by LEGO sales agents (LAN). I also think it is important to look at typical view counts and not subscriber numbers in assessing trends and popularity of LEGO videos/content creators.

    I might add: the decline of brickfilms’ success on TH-cam in the early 2010s was probably due to a major algorithm change in 2012 which prioritized watch-time over view-counts. This negatively impacted short animation style content as a whole, including brickfilms

    • @OurToyWorld
      @OurToyWorld  ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Hickox is a legend! I'm sorry I forgot about him, Count DoDo. He's not even a LEGO TH-cam legend.. he's a TH-cam legend. As a fan of brickfilms, I'd be interested to hear what your thoughts are on the current status of the brickfilming scene. I made a video about the death of brickfilming a few months ago, would love to hear your opinion on the topic: th-cam.com/video/pwkY_juOj9w/w-d-xo.html

    • @CountDoDo
      @CountDoDo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OurToyWorld Ok so firstly, amazing video on how brickfilms are dying, you earnt a sub, now for my opinions.
      Basically everything you said in the video I agree with, especially burnout, as an animator myself I find it hard to sometimes even animate 30 seconds of stopmotion, let alone upload stopmotions regularly.
      Another thing I’ve noticed is that there isnt the same audience for brickfilms anymore, if you search up “Lego Stopmotion” today its hard to find many videos which get over 500k views, and the majority get under 100k views.
      Continuing from what I just said, it’s interesting how you describe brickfilming as a dying art. I wanna focus on the word “art” Brickfilming is a process which takes a very long time and a lot of effort as you outlined. But TH-cam as a platform does not favor brickfilms at all, especially not in recent years. The algoritithm wants short and regular videos and you just can’t do that as a brickfilmer, a proper film takes time. So as recent years have shown people have resulted to all those “short tests” and the infamous “Lego man is…” videos which take probably under 30 minutes to make, yet many have blown up to 1 million+ views. This defintely has taken the spotlight away from brickfilmers who put lots of time and effort into their stopmotions, I’ve seen SO many underratted legends who deserve millions of views (you can see it in their work) yet get only 15k views while a Lego man stopmotion with 2 frames gets millions.
      In saying this though, the lego man trend has died down a bit which is good, and there are still a ton of amazing brickfilmers who continue to post great content. Even some original creators like Forestfire and Hamster Productions are still going.
      So overall the brickfilm community is very far from it’s golden age, legends like Michael Hickox and many others have stopped, but the community still continues and I know there are still amazing animators out there. Hopefully one day we can bring brickfilms back to their former glory. Sorry i made this so long lmao

      @OurToyWorld  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CountDoDo No, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and for subscribing! Would love to hear what topics you'd like me to cover in the future.
      I think what you said about the algorithm makes a lot of sense.. quantity over quality would allow brickfilmers to experience a plethora of success, but that would come at the expense of their content.
      Also I think the community has spread itself paper thin, but that's a whole other issue lol

  • @FirstOrderLego

    Awesome video Richie, quite comprehensive and well though out. Just a side note, something I think you lacked is creators that don't mix their personalities into their content, people that just focus on the building like hachiroku, chubbybots etc. Keep it up man!

    The first video I watched on TH-cam was a Grand Theft Auto brickfilm in the style of a commercial, and that released in late 2005, not long after TH-cam launched.
    I also recall creators such as Keshen8, Kooberz Studios and (Spastik) Chuwawa thriving with brickfilm content back then, with creators like Paganomation and Spite Your Face Productions working directly with LEGO for animated content as far back as 2002 and up through the early 2010's. MICHAELHICKOXFilms has been creating brickfilms for over a decade, and his videos still reach millions of people.
    I do enjoy making LEGO video essay content like Brick Theories since 2017 and I've met new creators inside and out of the LEGO community through it, such as Nick on Planet Ripple for his LEGO Rewind series, Big Yellow, and R.R. Slugger.
    Nice summary of LEGO TH-cam!

    I believe Circle Circle Dot Dot by Blunty3000 may have been the first brickfilm on TH-cam. IIRC it was posted in 2005 at least.
    I always felt pizzamovies got too much credit, as his first couple videos were just direct ripoffs of Spugesdu’s Squad 42. That being said the brickfilm era was easily the best. I think TH-cam as a whole started to go down the drain around 2012 when the algorithm came in and basically trashed animation as a medium on the website.

    If lego set reviews are dying, then i belive its due to the fact there is no innovation in the content itself. I believe that transformers reviews are thriving due to the innovation the genre has seen. With many camera angles and personality oozing out of the creative editing. I think R.R Slugger can change that for the lego community with his videos.

    The community nowadays isn’t as good as it use to be. I don’t know how to explain it, but I just feel like content creators are trying too hard at getting reviews out before others do. More specifically the lego Star Wars community. You have no idea how many young adult content creators there are that seem like they’re desperate to get new Star Wars sets early just so that they can review them as soon as possible. Soon enough to the point that the review seems rushed. I use to make Lego videos, but stopped because I can’t keep up with the desperate content creators. This community is becoming cheap. Some reviews are becoming whinny and garbage. Not gonna say who the bad creators are but I will say the older creators..not young adults..like real adults are the better content creators, their opinions just seem more valid.

      NightlyNewsatNine maybe? He was one of the most creative builders and stop-motion animators back in the day, and had tutorial videos for making all of the things you mentioned, as well as all the props he used in his Lego animations. At some point he pivoted to tutorials for FNaF characters and I kind of lost interest, and I think after FNaF was past its peak he fell out of popularity.
