A few points: - You mentioned that property prices have gone up in the past 18 months. While the partial mobilization in Russia may play a role in this, the main reason is the end of the cerveza. Especially considering the fact that coming out of it, a lot of employers have decided to go fully-remote in perpetuity. Therefore a lot of people have been wanting to go to Thailand for the past 3 years, having the money to do so, but didn’t want to quarantine. Starting last summer, that opportunity came again and they jumped on it. Russians are no exception. - Subletting long-term leases into short-term leases. This business model wasn’t invented by the Russians. In fact, the prevalence of such “business” has driven many local governments here in the US to put pressure on AirBnB. It takes business from hotels, while driving up the rent for the locals. In fact, I have an acquaintance in Pattaya (Western European), who does that exact business with his Thai wife. They lease houses long term (10-year contract), remodel them, put pools there, and rent them out per night (the leases have a stipulation that if the owner breaks it before the term is over, they compensate him for the work they did on the house). He has about a dozen of these. As far as condo’s go, I knew like 5 people who rented them out for a month minimum, but themselves had long term leases. This was before the cerveza, so it is nothing new. Nor is it something exclusive to Russians. - Language schools: So long as you are not from an English-speaking country, you can actually get an ED visa to study English. Now, as someone who has lived in Thailand for over a decade, you know the deal. You know that there are “schools” which are owned by a cousin of a guy in immigration. Nobody touches them. As far as the “students”, it’s the same deal, as long as they aren’t causing issues and paying their dues, nobody will touch them either. I don’t need to tell you how the interaction between business and law enforcement in Thailand works. There is the law, and there is enforcement. They are a bit different and I will leave it at that. But as far as Russians in Thailand go, this isn’t really that bad of a deal for the Thai Government. Because think about it, most of the Russians there have money. Either they own a business back home, have some passive income, or work remotely. Most of them aren’t your backpacker on a shoestring budget types. They like to live large and are willing to pay for it. Sure, there will be some bad apples, but that is with all nationalities, and Thailand has pretty much accepted that as part of doing business in tourism. But at the end of the day, Thai property owners are happy. Their properties are occupied and they are making a profit. Store owners are happy, they are making money. Restaurant and bar owners are happy, they are making a profit as well. “Legal” services and their “friends in high places” are happy, they are making money. All of that money (with the possible exception of the “legal services”), are adding to the Thai tax base. As far as the Thai people themselves, most don’t live in places like Phuket, Pattaya, or Samui. Unless of course they are somewhat involved in the tourism industry, in which case, their income has probably gone up. So this onslaught of Russians hasn’t made life more expensive for your average Thai who lives in Surin, Udon Thani, Chonburi, Chanthaburi, etc. The only people complaining are farangs who were used to cheaper prices. But let’s be honest, they can either swallow it and pay the market price, or choose not to go to Thailand. I’ve lived in Phuket for almost three years. Since the Russians started moving here the place has gone down the toilet. All of the things you say about raised real estate properties and traffic is absolutely true. What you are not mentioning is that the Russian culture is inherently tribal. They are not interested in melting in with society here. They are also obnoxious and arrogant. These “businesses” you mention that they are starting are for the most part illegal as well. It’s too bad. They have ruined a beautiful place. I will be moving out in May.
Why foreigner TH-camrs dont be honest about this issue?.. This is a major problem in Thailand my friend. Because the love of money, Thailand once beloved country and cultural is taking a hit in a negative way. There's a reason why the western part of the world is morally corrupt, without boundaries, structure or standards. Now their bringing that same toxic behavior into Thailand.

I like to watch sunrise and watch movies about kindness and love.. my hobbies is to help animals... and I can not believe that this world has become so cruel and full of racism This last year I got heart attack from the stress what is going in my country and from hate of European people in all social media . Guys, Who give you the right to insult Russian people ? Who give you the right to say we invaded Thailand? I came to Thailand because I want to be alive and my heart is tired to cry from pain and hate around. And I am also suffering from high prices here.. but I don’t have many choices to travel to another countries.. as you guys have. And we were betrayed by the whole European world, which has always talked about democracy. You show your democracy when you stoped to give visas to us.. Instead of supporting us you put knife in our backs.. the funny thing is that Russian people who created this war they are traveling to Europe very easy till now .. Because they are millionaires and they can buy what they want. But you betrayed us. You showed us that your democracy is fake. we, ordinary people, see only hatred towards us .. but you all just continue to killing our hearts .. Is this your European democracy and tolerance? We are innocent people forced to move to Asian countries. While the real aggressors come to live in your Europe. Is it fair? And you are proud of yourself and your sanctions against ordinary innocent people. who are dying of pain right now
I have to say. You should be at home fighting your dictator. it's sad that asian hasn't shut down to rusians. It seems like they care too much about your money. Russians have started a war in Europe. You shouldn't be allowed to travel. Personally, I love Phuket, but I don't go there anymore. I don't want to risk having to sit next to a Russian in a restaurant or the like. Keep up the good war, I hope you lose soon so we can have peace in the world.

For me that's simply one of the reasons to not going anymore to the Kingdom. On many places you are not anymore in Thailand. You are practically in Moscow or in St.Petersburg.
Lived in Prague for almost two years, and it was the same. Renting out the seediest apartment for $800USD because the Russian invasion. Recently booked my ticket to Phuket. A bit pissed that it's going to be the same as it was in CZ. I heard somewhere that Thailand was going to stop renewing their VISAs. Anyone know if this is true?
@@billrose2202 Yeah, I'll probably stay for another month or so. Need the sunshine. Plus I don't go to the beach but maybe once or twice a week, and I don't go out to the bars, so my interaction with them is pretty minimal. I guess I don't have any problems with them per se; but just with how many there are, driving up the prices or real estate by removing supply and increasing demand, like in Prague. A lot of the real estate agencies there too were run by Russians and as soon as they found out I was American, they didn't seem to want to help. Was ghosted twice by two separate Russian real estate agents in Prague. Prague Spring all over again sans tanks.
I guess it’s a thing now, if things aren’t going the way you like in your home country, you run away and go party in someone else’s country until someone else cleans the mess up for you. Freedom isn’t free. If you want it, sometimes you just have to go and take it.
Interesting. I am wondering how the Russian's will be supporting themselves long term in Thailand. For anyone applying for a retirement visa they have to have the deposit in the Thai plus the documented income.
I went in January and it is full of Russians but they were mostly families and they were quiet and respectful. But yes it takes away from the Thai ambience so I will go somewhere other than Phuket next time.
Nothing wrong with russians doing it... brits and americans have invaded all over the world for more than a decade...so wats wrong when russians does it!!
Nice statement. I thought most people complain that Americans are dumb because they never travel the world and most don't have their passports. Which is it? Whichever one is more convenient at the moment?

Similar to the invasion in Spain of a certain nation aswell as Australia and indeed the UK ,we are all in one way or another witnessing an invasion so what's the issue,is it because they are specifically Russian?
So all negative then lol. I didnt go Phuket this time due to the rain and other issues, and the fact I hear it's one big tourist trap but I will go next time I think when it's dryer
Phuket has long been on my bucket list and I was seriously thinking of visiting with my wife in Feb 24. However, I’m now having second thoughts. Is anyone aware of troubles between them and other nationalities there? Just want a good time and to enjoy ourselves. If not a good place to visit, can anyone suggest an alternative part of Thailand to visit? Wanted a bit of night life, a beach and sight seeing.
Just got back from kata, it was like 2 weeks in Russia, we were the only English speaking people in the hotel, won't be going to Asia again for some time. The Russians kept to themselves, and didn't even smile back when acknowledged, a total different experience from 2019
@@stevenbird7183 I had same experience back in March. I stayed a Mida Grande in Surin which was occupied by 90% Russian. Maybe because my ethnicity is a combination of romantic ( Latin ) cultures, it was astonishing to see this demographic not even social with themselves at the resort and even the awesome buffet breakfast. Maybe it was a sample and not true indication of what's real.
I just got back from Thailand. Was there in November. First time to SE Asia. Part of the time I was in Phuket. 90% of the tourists were Russian. I told people about this and they think I am exaggerating or crazy😂. Glad to see this video. I had no bad experiences with the Russian tourists. They kept to themselves.
@@livinginphuketthailand the region is pop 500k. Someone guessed how many Russians have traveled to Thailand, the entire country, in the last year. That might be 600k. The vast majority of Russian visitors to Thailand stay for up to a month. There might be 10k Russians, maximum, living long term in Phuket. They eat out say 5-10x more often than local Thai and drink at bars more often than the average expat. Publicly spoken Russian is going to be noticeable. All these factors lead people to overestimate the population.
Ukraine has banned all men between the ages of 18 and 65 from leaving the country. But as you can imagine, the ones with the means to leave, do leave. And the ones who were out of the country before the war started, aren’t in a rush to return. Plus, a lot of European countries are taking them in as refugees, providing them with various assistance programs. “Assistance programs” and “Thailand” are two phrases that don’t go in the same sentence. Especially when you add the phrase “foreign national” to that sentence. THESE are the real reasons why you don’t see as many Ukrainians as Russians in Thailand. That and the fact that there are 3x more Russians than Ukrainians to begin with, coupled with the fact that Russia has a much higher standard of living than Ukraine (before and after the war). Therefore, your average Russian will have more means to travel, than your average Ukrainian. Do your research, use your brain, and don’t buy into the propaganda from either side.
It's funny how everyone makes videos of Russians moving places but no one says a word of any other nationality coming into Europe for the past few decades.
Why not? Thailand is in the tourist business. If a potential tourist has money and is willing to spend it (even if staying long term), then wouldn’t it be dumb to turn them away? On the same token, I can ask why would Thailand let westerners retire in their country?
we're gettin out of the u.s. too for the same reasons, but we see what's up in Phuket, so we know better than to waste our time/money there. the rooskies can have it. easier to contain them & keep an eye on them lol
Yeah, we all understand why they're escaping their country (and many would try to do the same). However, it doesn't make it right and understanding doen't mean accepting. I'm not blaming them for doing so, though, but I'm blaming their government for letting it happen. Indeed, being the citizen of a country is not just about having a bunch of rights, but also about having a few duties. And potentially having to fight for your country, is just one of them. Nobody wants to go to war, but that's not the point. When your country is at war, you just have to go. Indeed, it's not always about what we want or not, not always about what we agree with or don't. When there's a war, your personal opinion is irrelevant, your government is in right to expect you to go and fight it, just like you expect him to do a whole bunch of things for ya in times of peace. And not only that the men shouldn't be allowed to leave Russia these days, but the women shouldn't be allowed to either. Because when the men are out there fighting, who's supposed to keep the country's economy running if too many women are also gone ? Who's supposed to take care of other people in the country (elderly people, children) ? What will Russians staying in the country (for whatever reasons) think about those leaving and abandoning them with all this shiiit on THEIR back ? What's the example given to children and the next generations of Russians ? And no, I'm not Russian myself. Yes, I live in Phuket. And yes, I fought for my country.
@Eric e ... I probably couldn't disagree more. "When your country is at war, you just have to go." So, my country, right or wrong, yeah? Kind of like "my father, drunk or sober" ... and when he beats the shit out of my mother, I should just respect that, yeah ... coz he's in charge? There's nothing sacred about governments. They get their power from people, sometimes, and sometimes they get their power by nefarious means. When they exercise that power immorally, it doesn't matter how they came by it, they deserve to be resisted. There is no contract that says while they're in power they deserve absolute or blind loyalty. If we had more courageous conscience-driven resistance to stupid adventurous wars, we'd have less stupid adventurous wars. And finally, whether it's the excuse of soldiers or of citizens, "I was just following orders" doesn't hold up well, as a justification for immoral actions.
@@TheWanderingPensioner You sound like a little kid who's comparing apples to oranges, just to pad himself on the back in persuasion he's right, lol. I mean someone who understands that everything he can enjoy in life NOW, is not just the result of countless miracles that came to bless, but more the result of tons of things his predecessors didn't like and didn't wanna do, but still did because they were bigger and more important than their own little will and lives. Most did what their leader was asking except that their leader was a crazy dictator called Hitler. No, you don’t have to fight for your country and follow a crazy dictator. what happens when their travel documents become cancelled, cancelled passports by those that did not respond to conscription..how do you get rid of people without passports?
and now the chinese are coming and not just on holidays... Prices are gonna go up crazy high. I left phuket for a quieter place. Couldn't find any more peace there. Phuket town used to be the quiet place with few tourists and now its become so loud full of bars. Feels like Patong almost these days. I'm out. Can't ever see Phuket being a peaceful place again but some people love it.. I like the locals but its the aggressive people coming from other provinces that I can live without.
I am glad I visited Phuket while it was still special
Sounds accurate. Phuket is a totally different place now
everything is different now lol, you too ma boy
Great video Mike! Some valuable information here. Good stuff to know especially since I maybe returning to Thailand at some point.
Glad it was helpful!
Mike the indigenous population is 250,000 Thais living and registered in the Province and add another 250,000 Thais that come from the North high season to work here makes 500.000 so 600,000 Russians here at the moment nah I hardly think so and I live in Kathu and the roads here are not busy even into Patong and Phuket Town,I wonder are we living on the same Island, ps I've been here 30 years and saw the last Russin invasion that led to Bengkok immigration coming down and purging the Island, especially Russians running an illegal business here, looks like history could be repeating itself.
When was the last invasion?

Many russian refugees come to the us,,
Thailand is one of the few countries Russians can arrive on a tourist visa. Most other countries they have to apply for a visa before arriving…and I am sure they’ll be refused.
The russians Who are coming in Phuket just want to run away from their country because of their psychopath president Putin, the imperialist mafioso who jails, kills, steals Russian people and invaded Ukraine in 2014 and 2022 plus Georgia in 2008…
I have visited countries with high Russian tourism, its not good
I’ve lived in Phuket for almost three years.
My only problem is that Phuket is no longer cosmopolitan. Meeting people f4om Europe is now rare....everybody is Russian
Initially I doubted the 600,000 figure, then I googled it! OMG! I feel bad for everyone else.
600,000 is wildly inaccurate to the point of impossible. A lot, yet. over half a million, not a chance.
i just wana know if the Russian girls in Phuket are selling or not
Why foreigner TH-camrs dont be honest about this issue?..
Thailand is as corrupt as the West

This last year I got heart attack from the stress what is going in my country and from hate of European people in all social media .
We Russians feel even worse than Ukrainians. we are morally broken and depressed .. we were betrayed by our own country..

Interesting about leasing property for long term n sub leasing out same property for short term rental.
Two words regarding Russian's Buzz kill
Good vid, but these guys subletting is very shady and if I was an owner I’d be pissed if I found that out. I would put a no sublet clause in the rental agreement
Who cares as long as they pay. If you are bummed about them able to sublease it at higher rate then why not increase your rate later then? Stop sour graping.
You must be Russian.
its illegal to sublet in Thailand unless permission is in the original contract. I dealt with some Russians trying to sublet and not only did she not show me the original contract she was very rude@@bigradwolf5001

I heard somewhere that Thailand was going to stop renewing their VISAs. Anyone know if this is true?
Just go another place in Thailand. Russians love Phuket. Try Krabi besides Ao Nang for instance.

600k Russians in Phuket 😅😅😅😅😅
Seems a bit high right?
@@livinginphuketthailand the region is pop 500k. Someone guessed how many Russians have traveled to Thailand, the entire country, in the last year. That might be 600k. The vast majority of Russian visitors to Thailand stay for up to a month. There might be 10k Russians, maximum, living long term in Phuket. They eat out say 5-10x more often than local Thai and drink at bars more often than the average expat. Publicly spoken Russian is going to be noticeable. All these factors lead people to overestimate the population.
Seemed like more while I was there in January 😂
Maybe 60,000?

Not many Ukraine people rushing away from the war
A lot of them escape UA and run away from the MADNESS of rabbi SELENSKY

Why not? Thailand is in the tourist business. If a potential tourist has money and is willing to spend it (even if staying long term), then wouldn’t it be dumb to turn them away?
