Dude, how the hell am I gonna get used to this? The system is so counterintuitive that I'm cooked, and my brain can't figure this out, I come from tekken 😂
This video is super helpful for someone like myself who is completely new to fighting games. This gives a nice easy starting point for learning the game. Also love when you explained the timing of combos how it's basically just 1 big string, and you don't have to wait for your first string to finish landing before entering the next move. This is one of the things I struggled most with at the start
Trying to learn Johnny Cage and was getting frustrated, watched this video and it has helped my game a ton! I'm slowly teaching my fingers to auto input the combos and it's thanks to your vid! Great job man, this was exactly the advice I needed to hear.
Love this guide. I learned Reiko this way. Soon as I saw back 3 as a footsie tool and forward 124 as a launch I knew there was a way to make it a full combo
Yea practice and goofing around with the strings is a great way to see what can be used in a combo together especially with meter alway full and goof around on what supers do with meter for extenders
Great, great video man, I suck at fighting games and been consulting a lot of tutorials, but yours is the one that has helped me the most; I think is because you explain your thought process, which is something a lot of people omit when teaching mechanics and systems in games -or even life-, in general...
Been mainly doing Invasions and Tower and I wanted to get into Multiplayer so I’m trying to learn to combo instead of just doing basic attacks with the occasional power attack, this is really well explained!!
"You're not going to be a pro in one single day" i appreciated this so much. For the most part all around yt thwre's just a bunch or pros doing crazy combo strings. I grew up with fighters but didn't know what it meant to take them seriously. Seeing all these people going crazy can be disheartening. You just reminded me that where i am now is all i need to be. Just keep pushing forward.
Thanks, Onestep! This helped A LOT. Coming in from Tekken, I was so used to the combo format (launcher > filler > ender) from there that I was virtually lost as to how combos worked in MK. I thought there had to be a format too or at least a rule on how to execute combos. After watching this video, I learned that it’s really the strings and special moves that are the “bread and butter” of MK combos.
Yes exactly! You’re coming from a very different series so it’s cool to see you make the comparisons and see the changes. Keep it up and you’ll get everything down no problem 🔥
I've been playing fighting games since before the very first Mortal Kombat came out back in 1992, so I knew all of this already, but I thought I'd watch it anyway, to see if maybe there was something I didn't know. Very good for beginners, this video. Man, this takes me back to MK3, when the series got combo strings for the first time. A handful of MK players I knew back then didn't like them - but man, I took to them like a fish to water. I remember me and my friend would spend hours with the DOS version of MK3, in two-player mode, practicing strings combos and mixing them with special moves - on the inanimate second player (there was no such thing as practice mode back then).
I’ve been finding out I like the rush down archetype personally and now I’m trying to find which character I find has the coolest combos within that archetype and that’s where your video comes in my friend, in other words thanks for this.
Thanks for the tutorial One step. It's so true about the kameos. I main Sub-Zero despite his low damage outputs and lack of safety. Yet, he's one of my favorite characters and also his gameplay is more so about reacting to the opponents which I want to be good at. I started looking into kameos for him at the start and understand why some works more than others, yet that process took away a tone of my foundation in landing basic combos with sub. So, you definitely nail that concept, especially for new players :)
I only started playing last week (just got my PS5), and your videos really helped me understand the basics! I had never played MK before (grew up on Tekken 3 and Soulcalibur 2 which did not really did not have as much emphasis on combo strings or timing). I bought MK1 because I was dying to play Nitara. I just got my first Flawless Victory tonight. Thanks!
@@onestep It was against the computer, so not against anyone online or anything. I’m trying to get better before I embarrass myself in front of veteran gamers 😂
Been tryna get out of my button mashing ways since MKX and I learn the moves list and try to string stuff together but it never worked and I would start mashing again. This video is helping me progress thank you.
It's so funny that you mentioned Baraka. I think that every time I pick him up again. His specials often involve multiple hits, extending your combo and making you feel like you're a beast for very minimal effort... Plus, he's always been one of my favourites since the old 3D days.

Nice job @Onestep, this is an exemplary beginner vidio. Also sometimes you may have a preference for a character but end up working better with another one. I have no idea why but Tanya is that character for me. There were a number of other characters I wanted to connect with and maybe later I will but right now Tanya is working very well for me. This is also how I handle a new character. Learn which strings cancel into which special moves. Even after so many Mortal Kombat games I am still struggling with the dashing in part some combos require.
Money was a little tight for a bit got mk1 later than most but got it and really felt the you might want to use somebody but dont mesh with them. I wish i could be an omni-man main but as of rn my timing with his stance grab is straight garbage.

I tried at least 3-5 different characters, and surprisingly, Smoke became my main instead of Liu Kang or Reptile. I tried practicing Smoke with Scorpion kameo because I saw a combo tutorial for Smoke. Playing Smole instantly clicked for me. I just have to master the vapor cancel in my combos. I like your videos One-step because you give great detail on how to perform each character.
Nice help mate! one question tho, what about hitting the opponent? most of time when i try to do a combo and the opponent block im literally dead because of the punish. Is there a way to learn the timing of hitting? it is a muscle memory thing? thank you!
What’d you mean? The 1,2,3,4? That was the FGC as a whole. Not us content creators. The FGC uses these so any player on any console knows what input is being said. It takes a min to memorize and learn but it’s easy with enough patience

@onestep I'm new to MK1 (and this is first one I'm playing with Combos, with prior experience with last few MKs like 11 or X, etc.). To build the muscle memory which one works best, xbox controller or keyboard? PS controller is not an option for me unfortunately. I feel a bit uncomfortable with d-pad, especially when it comes to do quick D+F+3 or something like that. Is hope it is just skill problem :D
Do you have any resources for dashing to share? That's where I'm struggling so much. Sometimes I feel like I don't have enough time to dash even though the window looks huge. Other times, I hit FF and move like half an inch and miss my extensions.
is there something in my settings I need to change I'm trying to learn Johnny and I'm watching your other video for combo references and for the life of me after the 212 he just stops the jump input doesn't go thru nor does any of my supers I'm lost
The jump can be hard on the timing. In fact all the timing can be a bit hard. I do 212 and then hold jump. Try that without trying a combo after and feel when the jump comes out. Then once you get the jump down then start to try that leading into another combo
I noticed my problem in trying to execute combos is that I always press the input at the wrong time, which screws me over. Sometimes I feel like I am pressing the buttons, but my opponent always ends up hitting me no matter what.

Mess with the input configuration, like what where do you want “X” to be and so on, like what feels the most comfortable. Then just keep at it. It’s a muscle memory thing that just takes practice and patience 💪
Probably just me, but I was trying the combo tutorials in training, and I felt they were borderline impossible. haha seemed no matter how many times I tried, or my timing on the combo, they never worked. or the combo string timer would end before the combo could even be performed.
Hi I just bought the game and decided to go with scorpion. I noticed that if Im on the right side of the screen the moves are a lot harder to make. Is this a bug? Im using keyboard.
Doing combos is one thing but trying to get your cameo to get in there with you is another so how come they don't have a cameo combo tutorial in the game
I’ve had the hardest time doing launch/juggle combos. I can’t tell if it’s because I’m used to playing on a PlayStation controller now I’m on Xbox or if I was that used to MK11 Even the combos in this video I can’t get😂

@@onestephe meant down 3, down 4, up 2 stuff like that
In the start if the vid you made the universal language for the combo thing
But Can you tell me what it is for Nintendo switch?
1-Y 2-X 3-B 4-A
@@onestep tysm
Been playing time guy and got a combo that does about 40% not bad for me the good thing about it is that as soon as its done I can do it again
Nice job!
Im having trouble comboing after dash any ideas how to do it better?
It’s just the timing tbh. Dashing in combos can be hard to get used to and it honestly just takes practice
Probably just me, but I was trying the combo tutorials in training, and I felt they were borderline impossible. haha seemed no matter how many times I tried, or my timing on the combo, they never worked. or the combo string timer would end before the combo could even be performed.
It’s hard to get the timing tbh. Just keep practicing!
Hi I just bought the game and decided to go with scorpion. I noticed that if Im on the right side of the screen the moves are a lot harder to make. Is this a bug? Im using keyboard.
Nah it just takes time learning how to do combos on both sides tbh. Keep up the practice!
Amazing video thank you
Thank YOU 🔥🙏
Doing combos is one thing but trying to get your cameo to get in there with you is another so how come they don't have a cameo combo tutorial in the game
@@Itz_Puxe they kinda do in the character combo challenges
Great video, thanks brother
Thanks for watching 🙏
@@onestep my pleasure bro
This was great thanks
Thanks for watching 🔥
I have just got the game about 2 days ago and have been struggling this is my first fighting game

Thanks for This!
Great video
Thanks so much! 🔥
I can't amplify the specials to save my life. Any tips??? Thanks
You gotta press the block button at the exact same time as the input. It can be hard to get down
@onestep thanks bro, for responding. Im on xbox s and i can't amplify anything. Seems really tricky 😕
@@caseycockerham3925 just keep up the practice. It takes time 🔥
I find aerial attacks so hard to do any tips?
It did the timing. It’s something only time and practice will fix. Keep up the work! 🔥
@@onestep I can now consistently do b2 3, u1 3 4, bf1 with liu kang so it’s going well.
how many hours a day should i practice?
Uuhh depends on your schedule. I would do AT LEAST 1-2 sets a day just to stay in the groove. But missing a day or two here and there Is totally fine
I’ve had the hardest time doing launch/juggle combos. I can’t tell if it’s because I’m used to playing on a PlayStation controller now I’m on Xbox or if I was that used to MK11
Even the combos in this video I can’t get😂
It’s hard and it takes practice. Keep it up!
thanks mate!😊
Of course! Thanks for watching 🔥
what’s better to use the joystick or the d pad on a controller
I used stick but I know many who used d pad. I think it’s all personal preference 😅
@@onestep ok thank you i learned one of the combos but instead of doing the ball i did an enhanced teleport and i liked it a lot thank you for the help
Personal preference…. A lot of people prefer the pad because some find it more accurate
Raiden is my main, i would like to see more videos of him i have a friend that plays baracca and he is destroying me with pressure, help!!!!
I’ll do my best!
Its all about timing and precision with rhis one
Agreed 🙌
Been enjoying ur vids man I am new to fighting games lol I love sub but man it’s rough out here. So far I can do a 18 hit combo but only worth like 294 lol I see other characters like close to mid 400 lol
Thanks for watching! And ya it just takes time and practice and you’ll start to figure out even longer combos. Just keep at it 🔥
But how do you remember all the combos
That just takes time and patience 😅
Ur the goat
Thanks my dude 🔥 I appreciate it
Nothing that’s come out can top XL that was my favorite the best fighting paced mortal kombat
Xl was so good 🔥
i cant dash into a combo, pls help 😮💨
Dashing inside a combo is hard cuz it has to be super fast and immediate. It honestly just takes practice and patience. Keep trying and keep at it!
if you really think about it mortal Kombat is just people throwing code at eachother and seeing who can think faster
@@noahk5397 that’s uh… fighting games in general.. ya 😅
@@onestep well uh... it's still funny to realize... so😅 technically all games are just throwing a bunch of code at other players
