      @Jon Solski Well, the whole city is changing. A lot of the long time homeowners are getting taxed out, so they sell their homes. Unfortunately, a lot of them get lowballed, and their homes sell for less than what was expected....I mean who can afford to have a house on the market for years?Then the homes are resold for 2 1/2-3x the selling price.

    Ayyyy my neighborhood is finally on House Hunters. One of my favorites shows and i never thought id see the day people start showcasing the Austin neighborhood of West Side, Chicago on national TV 😂😂😂. But what i can say is Gentrification has slowly started to creep into South Austin which is where im from. Alot of Victorian homes are and have been remodeled and are beautifully done. Many of them still have the historic character inside. Guess what the asking price is $300-550k!!! In Austin!!! Five years ago u could buy a home for $150-200k in remodeled condition. Taxes have shot up to around $3500-$5000 on average.

    • @whatoh3407
      @whatoh3407 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love those Victorian houses but Austin is moving SLOOWWWW soo idk about moving there lol.. half a million for a house there, no way. Chicago is obviously trying to expand the wealthy neighborhoods to the west side. They really don't want to gentrify the south side lol.

    Never thought Austin would be on a show like this. I remember in 2008 you could get fixer-upper single-family homes for under $60K and complete gut rehabs for not much more than $100K. Lots of abandoned properties.

I feel bad for these people who have no clue what they are getting themselves into. Yikes.

      I'm from Austin and I never thought I'd see the day they record in Austin. Buy Austin does have some nice historical and charming homes with character. Victorian and 4 Square and classic bungalows abound everywhere. Yes it has crime but I lived my entire life in Austin until about 12 years ago. My family all still lives there. This actually made me smile.

    Such a lovely couple! I'm glad they went for the second house, the natural light and spacial layout was much more ideal! I was just a bit confused as to how Austin is considered "up and coming". I've lived in Chicago for over a decade and would consider maybe Humboldt Park to be deserving of that label (hence the higher price per square footage asking price of the third small house), but Austin... lol. I wouldn't even call that statement a stretch. It's one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city. Not to say there aren't amazing people who live there, but yeah "up and coming". More like up and coming through your window to steal your tv lol!

    Yeah no wonder these places are cheap; Austin/South Austin are kinda scary 😬 They've been "up and coming" since I moved here 10 years ago; when do they... come?
    Adorable couple though, and I love the house they chose, even if it's not in the neighborhood I would personally go for!

    • @tvelicia
      @tvelicia หลายเดือนก่อน

      @erinrafferty5659 - Austin was supposedly "up and coming" when I purchased a condo in a gut-rehabbed building back in 2008. I was a renter in Forest Park at the time, but couldn't afford the type of place I wanted there, so I chose what I thought would be a great place in Austin. I had high hopes for the neighborhood. Originally there were 12 individual owners and 12 vacant units for sale. Investors swooped in and purchased the other 12 units. Over time, some original owners foreclosed and investors snatched up those units, too. Eventually, this resulted in only 4 owners out of 24 units; the rest of the residents were renters. The problem wasn't that the building was mostly renters; it was more so that the investors only cared about collecting rent money and not about maintaining the building. They had majority voting power and wouldn't vote in the best interests of the property because they didn't want to pay for anything. Long story short, back in 2021, the four owners who lived there and the slumlor...I mean investors agreed to sell the entire building. Towards the end of that year, we finally hired a realtor. In 2022, I purchased and moved into a townhome in Forest Park about nine months before the condo building finally sold. I was so relieved when that transaction was finally completed! There are some beautiful homes in Austin, especially the homes closer to Oak Park, but in my opinion it will be a long time before the Austin neighborhood gentrifies the way that other Chicago neighborhoods have done.
