    I have lived in Michigan my entire life. I love listening to you talk about the same places I've visited many times. The Mackinac Bridge is my favorite place to go. Once you cross it into the upper peninsula, you feel like you are that much closer to heaven. Michigan is an absolutely beautiful state.

    I'm from Oklahoma, my husband was born and raised in Michigan. I spent my honeymoon on Mackinaw Island. I loved it. At bedtime , it was so quiet, you could only hear the clip clop of the horses, and occasionally a barge going by. I felt like I went back in time and absolutely loved it!

    What a fun trip. I worked on Mackinac Island for 3 summers in the late 70’s. It was so much fun and it is where I met my husband. We have been married 40 years now. It has always been one of our favorite places to visit. Mighty Mac Hamburgers is where I worked. Thanks, it brought up a lot of great memories for me. ❤

    We live in Michigan and try to visit Mackinac island every year. We started staying on the island for one or two nights the last few years and that is really fun. It gets very quiet after the last ferry leaves the island. We take our bikes and ride all over the island and explore new places. We have three children and now they are all married with kids of their own. We hope to take some grandchildren when they get a little older. We celebrated our 40th anniversary in May. Blessings to both of you. You are such a sweet couple. So happy you got to see the island. Try spending the night next time and you’ll see. The people are wonderful there.

One of my favorite things to do when I go there is to ride the bike trail around the island. It is such a pretty trail. Another special thing to do if you visit again is at the Grand Hotel there is a tea party, it was so special to do this with my daughters. You are so right about enjoying these times with family. Maybe you'll be able to stay on the island and experience what it's like after all the fairies are closed and they closed down the shops in the quietness. And then get up early in the morning as the City opens up and comes to life in the clap clap with the horses.

    Michaela & Brandon, my dad grew up in Mackinaw City & we still have my grandparents house in the family. I grew up in San Francisco, CA & we went to MI every other summer to visit my grandparents. Every time we went we went to the Island. I have cousins who still live in Cheboygan & one of them got married on Mackinaw Island & the reception was at the Grand Hotel. We actually stayed overnight at the Grand Hotel, it was the most magical wedding & experience staying on the Island & at the Grand Hotel. I haven't been back since bfor COVID. My dad passed away 19yrs ago, but I took my mom, nephew & niece bfor COVID hit. My mom just turned 89 so I'm not real sure she'll b going back again. I hope to go myself in the next year or 2.

Frankenmuth is also one of my favorite towns which has a large beautiful Christmas store - Bronner's! It is fun to walk through even if you are not shopping. Yes, flowers in lower or upper Michigan are just beautiful. I have not been able to duplicate what I grew there while living in the south now. You may know that the ferrys stop running in the cold months. There is a small population that live on the island year-round. I do know Mama Mia's Pizza! Another great Michigan pizza is Buddy's! I am so glad you were able to go back there. My late in-laws went there for their honeymoon over 65 years ago, They stayed at the Iroquois hotel. My mom and stepfather went to the Iroquois hotel for their honeymoon 55 yrs ago. I went there for my honeymoon 31 yrs ago And stayed at the Iroquois hotel. A couple years ago One of my sons took his family and they went to the island for vacation. And oh yes, the fudge is amazing. When?
    I went 31 years ago. It was right after the lilac festival we went in June. I remember there were no telephones if you wanted to use a telephone you had to go down and they had them in the hallway on the main floor a payphone. The room we had was big and the bathroom was in a small closet. But oh, how I remember the white shutters that went halfway across the windows. The fort is amazing to see everything is. What a special trip you had with your parents. I had always hoped to have my mom and stepfather.Go back there again in later years.But my stepfather passed away 18 yrs ago.

    I'm also a Michigander, and I have been to Mackinac Island a couple of times, however, I'm HIGHLY allergic to horses and cannot go back. However, my Dad helped build the Mackinac Bridge, and the museum in Mama Mia's had burned down several years ago and they salvaged what they could but there was a lot that was lost. I've never gotten to go in there before it burned down. My Dad said there were some pictures and articles with him in them in the museum. He told me a story of when he showed up for work one foggy morning, but the ferries were not running because of the fog. My Dad having been in the Navy, told the pilot, help me load the ship with materials that needed to go over today, and get me a rope. He said what are you going to do. He said, I'm going to tie myself to the bow of the boat and direct you through the waters so I can get to work! Lol...the pilot thought he was crazy, but he did it and said, I'll stay here and wait for that fog to clear up because my nerves can't handle going back right now! 😂

    My parents were both born and grew up in the Upper Peninsula, so I’m very familiar with that area. My parents and older sisters have memories of crossing the straits before the bridge was erected, how you had to wait in line for the ferry to the UP, and vendors would have food stands along the line.
    My husband and I retired and moved from Jackson, MI to the UP in Curtis, MI. I moved to Arizona when he passed. It was so great to see images of my beloved Michigan!

    Frankenmuth has the ice sculptures every year and they also have ice carving competitions during the week of the festival. Michigan is such a beautiful State. We go to the UP every 4th of July (for the week). We stay at Drummond Island and it is positively gorgeous. When you get a chance go to Copper Harbor. It’s so beautiful. Lots to do in the UP. There are other museums, one in Sault St. Marie. I love the Mackinac Bridge. That is really cool that you got to go under the bridge on the way to the island. The island is actually closed during the winter months.

    Life long Michigander here! Mackinac Island is one of our gems for sure! You both need to watch the movie Somewhere In Time. One of the best movies filmed on the Island and at the Grand Hotel! It’s a love story you will love! 💕 🏨 🐴 🛥️

    I remember riding the ferry from the lower peninsula to the upper peninsula when I was a child. I was 10 years old when it was built, and I remember going over it the first time. I enjoyed Mackinac Island as an adult and went a few times. My family originally lived in a small community near Houghton and Hancock MI in the “copper country”. We moved to Detroit when I was four years old.

    I'm a Michigander . I have lived in both peninsulas. I worked on Mackinac Island 3 summers. My mother in law was born and raised there. The Island is 7 miles around. I haven't been back there since 1990 and don't miss it at all!!!

    Howdy Brandon and Michaela. My husband and I were both born and raised in Michigan. Although we grew up at the bottom of the mitten, (near Ann Arbor and just 20 mins north of Toledo OH), my parents took 2-4 week trips throughout Michigan nearly every summer. I remember going to Mackinac Island when I was around 15 years old. What a trip that was. We also went to see the Tahquamenon Falls in the UP. Then on our honeymoon, my husband and I went back to the island, and rented a bicycle built for 2 and rode all over the island. What a beautiful place to see with the one(s) you love. We have been married now for 42 years. God has truly blessed our marriage, and our family, so richly. I pray blessings for you both, always. Remember to always keep your eyes stayed on Jesus! {{{hugs}}}

    The story of fudge making on the island started in 1887, the year Grand Hotel was built. Henry Murdick came to the island to make canvas awnings for Grand Hotel, and his son started a business selling fudge and candy, using his mother's recipes. There is more to the story, and you can find it in the free "Inside Mackinac" magazine at the downtown tourism booth, along with a fantastic map.
