- It's part 2 of Sky's launch line up and today we're looking at channels 500+. We'll be looking at Music, Kids, Shopping and the rest, along with something called "Music Choice" which was originally a radio type service that changed into a red button service where you had a choice of other music to chose from.
I touch on Sky's interactive services but to see more videos about that (which is a whole other thing) you can check out Evil Hamburger 64’s look at sky’s interactive TV and games

Shout out to Steve G on youtube. A lot of the clips I found for episode 14 and 15 from this time period are from his channel so check out some of his videos for the originals. www.youtube.co...

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Jesus
Love this content. Love the subject matter but also the sound mixing, it reminds me of old radio broadcasts in the 80's and 90's. It shows real love for the medium.
The History Channel had shows about... you guessed it... aliens and pawn shops.
And to think it all started out with shows about old wars and technology's upbringing. Of course, that historical History Channel stuff is free for Americans now.
This is fascinating to see late 1990s sky channels. I only got sky in 2008 after the digital switchover. There will be a mine of programmes, documentaries and quiz shows still to be investigated. Keep it going!
I remember Discovery +1 being the first +1 channel, but I'm sure in the early days of Sky Digital they tried something like Discovery +1.5 which was a 90 minute delay
Yes. According to Wiki it launched on 25/06/07 and shut down on 21/04/08
I’m Frank Smith, and I’ll still be Frank Smith at the end of this comment.Thank You Bye 😂
Found your videos last night! Loving this series and can't wait to see more. Love hearing about what an insane wild west early cable/digital TV was like.
Plus your humour is absolutely on point 😂
Going to bed in 20 minutes. Arrived just on time.
Music Choice was cracking, so many choices of tunes available... I still have a promotional long sleeve T-shirt from a trade show I went to for Music Choice Europe somewhere...
11:57 I'm glad you mentioned this. WWE didn't acknowledge the UK exclusives that much which meant nobody outside the UK would know about it and that major moments wouldn't happen.
Sky didn't start airing most of the PPVs (including the big 4 PPVs) on Box Office until the mid 2000s.
I played Behive Bedlham so much on the interactive games section 😂
If the show"flipside tv"were ever to return you'd be the perfect host👌
Ha :P I would love that, but also the production costs for that were probably pretty low for a show like that. These days there's so much stuff that would make that would make it even cheaper
Cartoon Network wasn’t there until at least spring 1999. If I recall it joined around the same time as British Eurosport
Apparently it was December 1998 and I saw an EPG from Feb '99
Those UK WWF PPV's were basically glorified house shows. I think I only ever saw 1 of those shows live at a friends house as there was no chance my parents would ever fork out for one when the big shows were on normal Sky Sports.
On the Vince stuff, i think we all knew he was a terrible person, but nothing couldve prepared me for reading the details on that one
The first one was fantastic though (One Night Only and I was there). After that, they just became neglected.
Thank you for the videos!
Thank you for the watching of the video :) much appreciated
4:50 - I liked how the music in the Nat Geo ident was an African remix of Elmer Bernstein's fanfare that played before the old "National Geographic Presents" docos
Very good on point with VKM lol really enjoy your videos Johnny. Good them coming 👍
The launch of Sky Digital was like an explosion with all those new channels and money being spent on programming. Now it’s just a load of utter boring repeated rubbish
Yeah. There will probably be another boom when the switch to online happens. Don't forget the new rubbish we got tho... channels with premium rate phone ins and that
Vince MacMahon jokes are always appreciated!
US versions of those, Travel channels, Science Channel. Still owned by now Warner/Discovery.
Brilliant stuff, as always. I feel like one day we're going to get a video history of wrestling on UK TV, but maybe that's just wishful thinking...
I've added it to the list! :)
Magic TV's launch was very show busy
I was was reading that it launched on the 13th of September 2001... I wonder how many people were actually watching it
@@jonkasonic I wasn't around for the launch show to be honest because I wasn't even born in 2001
Cartoon Network wasn't exactly available from launch but it did appear a few months later on Sky Digital on 19th December 1998, however the 24-hour version didn't come until March 1999.
I also have some info about P-Rock, as you were looking for info in a previous video so I decided to do some research, what is the best way to contact you as I tried commenting with a link but TH-cam doesn't seem to like it for some reason? I also tweeted you too with my info :)
Ooh yay that would be ace, I'm not sure why it's being weird but best way is probably send me a message on facebook ( facebook.com/jonkasonic ) or email studio@johnnyrobinson.co.uk and I will keep an eye out :)
@@jonkasonic Oh thank you, keep up the good work!
Shop! was Granada and Littlewoods, not Flextech.
Yeah! Dang it... i confused it with Screenshop.
That was a interesting video about the history of Sky Digital
Love the videos you do ❤️✌️
Next episode will focus on Magic TV, CBBC, CBeebies and CITV
The next episode doesn't have the kids channels but it will have Magic. I did a thing on CITV here ---> th-cam.com/video/GrPncw9C30s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=X_qI-1MMaXOhSbH3
Considering the seeming need powers that be all around the world have to remove useful things (still havent gotten over the headphone jack thing on phones), its possible some channels would get rid of their +1 channels
I miss Discovery in its original format. At least you might learn something, unlike today.
When UK Play was first being planned, it's name was going to be "BBC One TV", which probably would have ruffled some feathers had that name went ahead. Even "BBC Radio 1 TV" or indeed "BBC Radio 1 Play" would have been less confusing.
Sky News is still on channel 501 (on sky stream) and CNN is channel 506 0n Sky stream
Vince did not survive, he resigned the next day. i guess the deal with streaming to gain rights of wwe live programming outside US and the new head of the board of TKO being rock did not help.
I think the Netflix thing sounds pretty cool though. Might actually watch it. I think live streaming stuff like that is the way to go. I've mentioned on the channel in various places that it's where I think things should be going, especially live programmes because they are cheaper to produce and it encourages engagement from the audience.
It's difficult to look back on wwe and not find certain bits cringe anyway, not even including the seedy vince bits (which is also what Linda calls... never mind). I haven't watched for years but I sort of go with what I've heard others say, that he created things that I was a fan of and I think the repeated patern of behaviour and stuff says a lot. But I could say that about many other media talent from over the years
Some music got replaced by generic bs
Yeah the box ident apparently had a daft punk sample in it and it didn't like it so I tried to find something that resembled it
@@jonkasonicbut part of review of the music channels is not heard
Where can i find that opening with the vitamin and mineral rap advert?
@prevueminimaxagain6908 It's only cut out me saying the channel name. It's annoying but wouldn't let me be precise and would require a whole re-edit. The clip I took it from didn't have matched so thought it would have let me.
The complan ad is from 1989. I was originally going to use the New Zealand one which is the same as the uk but a different end, and then I found one else where but the audio was crappie so used the New Zealand sound. Here is the New Zealand one.

In my search for the uk version, I came across the South African one which used the same concept but was a different man.

Do I watch now or save it for tomorrow?! WHY HAVE YOU POSTED SO LATE?! :(
Aww, sorry :( I've been meaning to post since about 6 but things kept happening. I have these things and they keep talking to me and saying "Dad..." this and "Dad" that. "The gas is broken and I need a shower", "can I have dinner now?" "Where's my (Insert item here)" "Can I have robux" "I need clothe" "Me Hungee"... they could just ... not. :P
@@jonkasonicah, I understand. It’s done now. I’ve watched it.
I just hope I can find something of a similar quality to watch tomorrow. Might have to watch your Telecat dub again or something.
Brits version of C-span I guess.
