  • It's time for a new episode of the Television Affair. This is well overdue and wasn't even going to be the next one. I was actually writing a big video about Cable TV... so that's for next time
Today We'll be looking at Kids TV close downs. Not shutdowns, whose are different. We'll be taking a delve into the nightly close downs from TCC, Pop & Tiny Pop, CITV, Nick & Nick Jr, Cartoon Network, Fox Kids, Cbbc and Cbeebies.
It was also meant to be a lot shorter but turns out that I had a lot more to say and mess about with so here it is!
Just want to highlight the Nick JR close down from the early-mid 2010s which was... terrible to say the least... but what channel do I think is the best kids channel? You might be surprised.
I also realized while making this video that I had been watching kids TV on and off for about 35 years.
I mention these in the video
    • Steve Everitt - The Hood
    • Zack Tempest - Loaded ...

Cbeebies evokes a wave of nostalgia. It used to dominate my TV from dawn till dusk, captivating my son, who adored the channel, especially his favorite, Raa Raa the Noisy Lion. Fourteen years later, I find myself teary-eyed, reminiscing about the cherished memories it brought. I invested in merchandise like pillow sets, curtains, and DVDs, a testament to the impact it had on us. Thank you, BBC, for crafting something extraordinary that not only entertained our children but also eased the journey of parenting.

Ahh, we became parents around the same time (I have a 14 year old). Those damn unsupervised fish children. The Wonder Pets indeed was a top tier kid’s show though. I make us sing “what’s gonna work?” every day at my job.
Great episode. You put a lot of care into this one and it shows. And after 20:50 I fear we all have seven days to live.
    But hell yeah Hardy Boys

There are 5 years between my two kids. Cbeebies the channel was a big fixture of my oldest’s life when she was little. But my youngest (now 4) doesn’t watch linear TV at all. He watches Cbeebies programmes …on the iPlayer. So we don’t get the classics of the lunch time song this time around.
Interesting how viewing habits have changed in such a short time.

The child at 20:48 I think is saying "scrambled egg and soldiers". Soldiers being bread cut in to strips usually so they can be dipped in to soft boiled / runny eggs.

Yeah i was sat there for ages one time thinking... what is on that plate that sounds like what the kid is saying and I wouldn't say scrambled egg and soldiers came to mind because you can't dip scrambled egg 😀

Yes, about time someone mentioned those singing cows on Nickelodeon that ran all the way from late 90's to 2002, I thought that I was the only one who remembered that closedown (yes it upset me when that happened but when it went digital at least I got to watch it for a little bit longer, and then when it became a 24 hour channel there was no need for you). And also Cbeebies having a special block of relaxing shows and a bedtime story show. There was a heavy metal version of the bow wow doggy closedown too ('I will taste your blood'). There was also a 'good morning' and 'good night' sign off on CN with Uncle Grampa, where for the latter they played it backwards.

I know that it's a pretty odd thing to say, but the thumbnail of this video with the half-silhouetted teddy bear actually makes me emotionally sad, as every time I think of it memories from my early childhood begin to seep into my brain.

Hi, I have a question for you, I'm making an online channel called Good Television(ik I made up the name abt 3 years ago lol) and it's a mixture of cartoons, comedy shows and stuff about TV history(bc I love TV history, even learnt a few four your videos) and I'd like for this show to be on it(at around 8pm). Please answer soon because I'm launching it around the end of July/start of August, I'll even send you some exclusive videos to show you what it is(maybe even a Television Affair episode abt online TV) haha jk. I love the mix of humour and information shown in these, sorry for waffling but thanks for reading.

Btw how lovely was the T-Bag closing theme? I’ve honestly listened to that just to chill out and be all nice and bittersweet and nostalgic, etc. It proved especially popular for me during the pandemic.

A rather good look at TV channel closedowns if I do say so myself! However, even at the age of 10, I found that Nickelodeon closedown unsettling as hell! That dog closedown they had before was originally a regular ident that Fred Seibert and Alan Goodman designed for the US Nickelodeon channel as part of their late 1984 rebrand! Citv on the other hand: yes, I know the 2006 ban on junk food advertising during kids programming has caused ITV and other broadcasters to spend less on kids programming but such a ban should NEVER have been put in place in the first place! Such a ban has clearly NOT reduced obesity, there do exist ways to reduce obesity that actually work, and although I can’t forgive McDonald’s, Starbucks and other companies for supporting Israel in their genocide, I do feel that children and teenagers need to know that while a balanced diet and exercise are important, the occasional treat is still perfectly fine! Do NOT get me started on the junk food advertising ban before 9pm coming next October, I’ve done a video on that and it just adds salt to the wound that is the 2022 NHS Takeover Act that’s broken our NHS into 42 Integrated Care Boards, which are a step towards forcing US style “pay a fortune or die” health “care”!
Luckily, I have been told that Rewind TV, who are launching later this month, WILL have children’s programming as part of their lineup!
In the big scheme of things, if we do vote out BOTH the Tories AND Starmer’s “Labour” at the next election, we need a whole new Broadcasting Act that abolishes Ofcom, allows crisp and sweet adverts back onto kids TV, pushes to have more kids programming available to those who can’t afford Sky or Netflix and gives us more region-specific channels!
You might actually want to check out some of the videos I’ve been uploading in more recent years: I hit out at the current Tory government, Starmer being a Tory in everything but party affiliation, why ITV are wrong to close Citv and why the BBC should not close CBBC.

Yeah I remember them both being used around 2008. I always assumed Jimmer Jammers was older because Land of Dreams' CGI is very reminiscent of the late 2000s, while Jimmer Jammers had Blue's Clues iconography (which I don't even think was airing on Nick Jr at that point)
