Destiny I love your show and think you're a genius, but I wish you and other TH-camrs would look into the Skorea situation before you compare western countries to them. The S.korean government has FULL access to everyone's smart phone data, meaning they can live track and contact every civilian at a moment's notice. Basically when a positive Cass pops up, they're able to track where that person has been, and who they be been in contact with. This is why their track and trace system has been so effective. HOWEVER in most western societies where privacy and freedom is paramount, we'd never ever let the government have that much power. But without it the government's are shit out of luck. The UK (where I'm from) handling of Covid has been and still is a mess, but there's no way we can be as effective as S Korea without drastic changes overnight to our privacy laws

This South Korea piffle means nothing. The UK's response was disastrous not because we can't be like South Korea, but because we *refused* to even be like Norway, like Denmark, or, conversely, like a flexible but intelligently managed Netherlands. Hell, we tried LARPing as Sweden, but given our population density and notably different social culture, couldn't even entirely pull that off and by contrast of GDP contraction and overall outcome, the other nordic countries that did act immediately did far better. So no, we don't have to copy South Korea. We had far better Western European models to follow and failed at that as well.
If we want more cases, New Zeland did really well compared to us. And in general even if S Korea did especially good from authoritarian measures, that doesn't excuse the uniquely bad response the USA had.

Canada's per capita death and cases rate are 2.6 per 10,000 and 0.5% while US's per capita death and case rates are 6.7 per 10,000 and 2.5%, so US's death and case rates are 2.5 and 4.6 times higher than Canada's, so I think lower numbers would have been achievable with a better response.

While I agree I think things could have potentially been better I however have to say I don't think South Korean response and US response are in any way comparable. In South Korea, there is much more value placed on the the group than on individuals. This kind of thought process extends to pretty much all aspects of life. Logistically, distributing testing also for example, is in no way comparable for a small country like South Korea compared to the US. Contact tracing and testing I expect have played a very large part in the response here. Contact tracing requires a lot of invasion of privacy I hardly think a lot of US people would be on board with. If something is said by the government here, people tend to blindly believe/follow it regardless if it is correct or not. A pretty good example of this is fan deaths. Belief in fan deaths continued until years after I had been here initially. I am not saying the US doesn't follow what the government says, I would say there would likely be, in general, far more resistance to measures similar to what was done in South Korea. I would also say while I don't necessarily think it is right... I also think it would have probably been severely negative for their popularity. Not saying Trump is super popular... but it probably would have been worse for him. Again, I don't think that should be a significant factor... but it might have been.

I think it is definitely possible but I think to take it as a statement of fact is a bit of a hard pill to swallow. In that way (far less unified response), I don't think the 2 situations (US/SK) are really all that comparable. That is to say, I don't think it is reasonable to expect the same outcome in the US had they even the exact same response as SK. Actually much of the response was done without a lot of actual enforcement and relied heavily on social responsibility based on government recommendation (not actual regulation/enforcement). This can easily be seen that there was actually very little actual enforcement of mask wearing. The government recommended it, the vast majority of people followed even when a few people did not and did not get in trouble for not doing so (no actual enforcement by government). They heavily relied on the social dynamics here which are fundamentally different from the US.

Destiny I love your show and think you're a genius, but I wish you and other TH-camrs would look into the Skorea situation before you compare western countries to them. The S.korean government has FULL access to everyone's smart phone data, meaning they can live track and contact every civilian at a moment's notice. Basically when a positive Cass pops up, they're able to track where that person has been, and who they be been in contact with. This is why their track and trace system has been so effective. HOWEVER in most western societies where privacy and freedom is paramount, we'd never ever let the government have that much power. But without it the government's are shit out of luck. The UK (where I'm from) handling of Covid has been and still is a mess, but there's no way we can be as effective as S Korea without drastic changes overnight to our privacy laws

This South Korea piffle means nothing. The UK's response was disastrous not because we can't be like South Korea, but because we *refused* to even be like Norway, like Denmark, or, conversely, like a flexible but intelligently managed Netherlands. Hell, we tried LARPing as Sweden, but given our population density and notably different social culture, couldn't even entirely pull that off and by contrast of GDP contraction and overall outcome, the other nordic countries that did act immediately did far better.
So no, we don't have to copy South Korea. We had far better Western European models to follow and failed at that as well.
If we want more cases, New Zeland did really well compared to us. And in general even if S Korea did especially good from authoritarian measures, that doesn't excuse the uniquely bad response the USA had.

I think the most fair comparison would be to Canada, which mimics the US pretty well except for its more stringent and coordinated enforcement of mask mandate, lockdown, and contact tracing without cell tracking. Canada's per capita death and cases rate are 2.6 per 10,000 and 0.5% while US's per capita death and case rates are 6.7 per 10,000 and 2.5%, so US's death and case rates are 2.5 and 4.6 times higher than Canada's, so I think lower numbers would have been achievable with a better response.

23:30 @destiny I actually live in South Korea and have lived here for 13 years. While I agree I think things could have potentially been better I however have to say I don't think South Korean response and US response are in any way comparable.
In South Korea, there is much more value placed on the the group than on individuals. This kind of thought process extends to pretty much all aspects of life. Logistically, distributing testing also for example, is in no way comparable for a small country like South Korea compared to the US.
Contact tracing and testing I expect have played a very large part in the response here. Contact tracing requires a lot of invasion of privacy I hardly think a lot of US people would be on board with. If something is said by the government here, people tend to blindly believe/follow it regardless if it is correct or not. A pretty good example of this is fan deaths. Belief in fan deaths continued until years after I had been here initially. I am not saying the US doesn't follow what the government says, I would say there would likely be, in general, far more resistance to measures similar to what was done in South Korea. I would also say while I don't necessarily think it is right... I also think it would have probably been severely negative for their popularity. Not saying Trump is super popular... but it probably would have been worse for him. Again, I don't think that should be a significant factor... but it might have been.

However, I also think there would have been some people which would have rejected what he said simply because he said it. That is kind of the issue though. I think that the US would have been far less unified than that of people here in South Korea. To say it would have been far better or even that "it would have been better" is entirely hypothetical. I think it is definitely possible but I think to take it as a statement of fact is a bit of a hard pill to swallow.
In that way (far less unified response), I don't think the 2 situations (US/SK) are really all that comparable. That is to say, I don't think it is reasonable to expect the same outcome in the US had they even the exact same response as SK. Actually much of the response was done without a lot of actual enforcement and relied heavily on social responsibility based on government recommendation (not actual regulation/enforcement). This can easily be seen that there was actually very little actual enforcement of mask wearing. The government recommended it, the vast majority of people followed even when a few people did not and did not get in trouble for not doing so (no actual enforcement by government). They heavily relied on the social dynamics here which are fundamentally different from the US.

You can argue hindsight but that wouldnt hold up when you realize that we have all this information now and we just ignore it and pretend that what we've been doing in the US is somehow working

So how people with mask are catching covid is due to lack of proper precautions. There either not wearing there mask properly. Dude calls them fake news and has literally tried to run their credibility into the ground. He asked for this, so he reaps what he sows. Forget impartiality, this isnt softball anymore, their reputation is on the line, they should have grilled his ass harder. You can't say whatever you want and expect impartiality. Trump killed political correctness in politics, they asked him a few question and pressed him. Honestly he should have expected that, and he was prepared for it, how he dealt with it is up to the viewer but he had this coming and its nothing less than what he has earned from the media.
Basically, he declared war on the media, I think they should absolutely play hardball. Forget this Trump victim narrative. If he wants less combative moderators, he should maybe ease up on his "fake news" rants, calling out them by name. Watch any of his rallies he does it all the time.
Reading some of the comments here and elsewhere for the past 4 years, the fact is there are people who will simply never give this man their ear. Each word he utters is passed through a filter of racism, divisiveness, and sheer contempt for the ideals of liberals before it ever registers in their brain the meaning of his message. Nothing will appease these people, nothing will satiate their thirst for the end of his reign.
