    2:40 As someone who’s attended many city council meetings as a part of an old job, one of the main reasons why I think it’s hard to actually solve homelessness is because the solutions to help alleviate homelessness are usually unpopular. Whenever an assistive housing project was proposed there was always a large portion of people arguing that they didn’t want it near their neighbourhood because it would “raise crime in the neighbourhood and decrease their home value”.

    Bruh when you have generations of your family members growing up in the same home, being told to move out is just insensitive. There's sentimental value attached to that house. Yes Natives were invaded but people in the modern age aren't at fault for that. You can't hold people at a figurative gun point and tell them they have to move out because their ancestors fucked over Natives. Forcing anyone out of a house they own is insane.

    On LA's public transportation: the issue is NIMBY's. When the purple line was announced to go from downtown all the way to UCLA and Santa Monica, Beverly Hills went berserk and recruited their kids to literally walk out of their high schools to protest the line for fears of 'gas leaks' and 'dust.' In fact Beverly Hills is the reason why route 66 isn't a free way that connects the 101 to the 405 and is just a road. Century City was literally built up vertically with the expectation that route 66 would be a freeway, and thats why its so damn far away from the 405, causing massive congestion to and from the freeway along Santa Monica Blvd and Wilshire. Another example is Elon Musk had plans to create a tunnel from LAX to Brentwood underneath the 405 until Brentwood stopped it in its tracks. Santa Monica also tried to stop the expo line from downtown and USC to the beach but failed (thank god).
    We have a lot of public transportation projects ongoing right now but they're going to take decades. 2028 Olympics will increase the speed that we get these projects done, but its not enough. West Hollywood for example won't get public rail until like 2050. That's ridiculous.
    IMO self-driving cars will come before all of this is finished. We should keep our freeways, and subscription-based self-driving cars can take us to work. Dedicate half the freeway lanes to self-driving buses, or 1-seat cars that are half the width and half the length of a regular car (to increase throughput, think like motorcycles side by side). Self-driving cars that communicate w/ each other will also be much more efficient for less traffic jams.

      Note that he didn't really say always rent over buy, he said "if you have to ask, yes". I'm in the US, I own a home and have a few other properties that I rent out.
      IMO you need a couple things for buying to better than renting.
      First, you need to know you are going to be happy living there for at least the next 5 years. If you end up moving in two or three years, you generally lose more money than you saved. There are a lot of fees associated with a purchase. And it's not as simple as rent vs. mortgage, with owning, you also have property taxes, home insurance (vs. much cheaper renters insurance), and regular repairs. So the margin is a bit slimmer than it looks at first glance.
      Second, you need to be pretty financially secure. If you lose your house to foreclosure because you lost your job, you generally lose a lot of your equity, if not all of it. Also, you accept a lot of risks by owning, if your A/C goes out, certain plumbing problems occur, foundation or electrical issues, etc. any of which could easily be $10,000 out of pocket. For people living paycheck to paycheck this could be a serious problem.
      If you meet those criteria, you get a good deal on a house in a reasonable area and get a good loan, I think you'd probably be better off.

      My question to people like yourself is why should people with large amounts of wealth care about the poor when people like you just want to ruin them and like Destiny seem to hate them?... I'l put this another way, if someone is trying to murder you would you care if they die themselves? No you wouldn't, you would be "fuck them". You need to show respect in order to get some respect in return.. I'm by no means wealthy, but I don't care that Bezos is a billionaire, good on him. But the way I see it is the more things you own the more your things own you.

    Wow didn't think I'd disagree with Destiny but saying fuck homeowners and increase Tax rate won't help. He proposes to rent as a solution but somebody still owns that apartment you rent and if the government will increase the tax on the property the rent will also increase because landowner wants to make money. A landowner who rents most likely doesn't even lose any money when tax increased. You can't ask for lower rent and higher taxes.
    However, I do agree about selling the property and moving if you're priced out by the growth in value. In the end, you lose something sentimental but you're compensated for it.

    And the problem with Californian property taxes is their appraisals. Realizing that appraisal isn't necessarily realistic.

Well now because of land prices, it's now worth 100 million and you have even less money to pay for it. Need workers to care for the homeless? Well a living wage is going to be a lot higher due to property values. This is why the rest of the taxes are so high. They need the same money somewhere elser.

    1:50 the main problem with homelessness in LA is the city's end goals. They aren't trying to just give people a simple place for them to live just to get them off the streets, they are building what are essentially subsidized apartment complexes. this is a consequence of NIMBY and the regulations around building residential living spaces. Most areas in LA don't want homeless shelters to be built in or near them and the cost, red tape, and agenda of the city dictates that the "shelters" that are built are basically apartment complexes, which are cost inefficient and the supply of these housing units remains remarkably low relative to the homeless population. Then you can get into the conspiracies around it: contractors want to build these types of buildings as it makes them more money than just simple homeless shelters, and a moral hazard arises due to the fact the city is essentially giving out free or subsidized/heavily rent controlled apartments. and none of this even touches on the macro economic conditions that started the homelessness problem in this country in the first place (the recession, automation, etc.)

    Sheesh, this Prop 13 slippery slope argument against CA's current Prop 16 is maddening. Prop 13 was never meant to apply to commercial properties, and Prop 16 simply closes this loophole. That's it. It in no way impacts residential properties...unless you buy into this fallacious slippery slope argument.
    That being said, I disagree with Destiny on Prop 13 when it comes to residences. While it can/should be amended, mostly to incentivize Cities/Counties to build more residential (currently it somewhat discourages it), overall I feel it's done more good than harm over the decades.

    • @davidradtke160
      @davidradtke160 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure...if your already a home owner it’s been great. If not it’s been a really problem. You can’t fix homebuilding with prop 13. With prop 13 the local infrastructure expansions required for new housing development get shifted into “building fees”. In cheap areas those capital improvement fees are 40k plus added to each new house. In the expensive areas it can be 60-90k in fees. Those fees exist because there is not enough long term property tax revenue from new housing to properly fund the costs of expanding roads, sewers etc, because of prop 13. Prop 13 is one of the largest drivers of the housing affordability crisis in California. Prop 13 displaced the costs that would be covered by property taxes, which are fairly stable, and moves those onto “user” fees which are only paid by “new” people and are highly unstable in recessions. That instability also drives many of California’s fiscal and political problems. Prop 13 has made a mess out of California for the benefit of older existing homeowners and to the detriment of everyone else.

    I wish they would stop with the quota bs. I have been a member of a political party before I could even vote and in party elections I have voted for women not because they're women but because I thought they were the most suitable/competent and represented me the most.
    My party's rank-and-file voted for a woman to lead our party in our state over a man - and the man was the favourite and he had lots of endorsements from the 'establishment'. I thought he was too much of a head office type and given corruption scandals in recent years this was not good. The woman had been the target of coordinated smear campaigns in the past bc she had the integrity stand up to corruption. She grew up in the country and I thought she was likable . She got like 90% of the vote. More and more women are ending up in positions of power and not because of quotas. Women are smashing through glass ceilings on their own. Honestly I couldn't careless who is on a corporate board - how bourgeois is that! 99% of people never will be. It should based on merit, and if a company doesn't elect the most competent to the board then that's the company's loss.

    I think Destiny didn't really make a lot of rational responses to this, a lot subjects brought up by Shapiro are hard to refute when they are quality of life and unnecessary taxing problems.
    His hatred of Proc 13 send kinda short sighted as well, lot of people want to settle where they were born or where they buy their homes. The fact that you want property tax to keep going up as time goes on sounds antithetical of the idea of a community. But okay.

    This video really didn't have a lot of value

    • @SanvelloSerapiega
      @SanvelloSerapiega 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Prop 13 problems he was complaining about were taxes increases when general property values increase which isn't the result of individuals and is about people not wanting to pay higher taxes on a specific house not living in the community in general. (Which seems to be why he fixates on the born at the time and property the owner did litteraly nothing on)
      He seems upset cause the problems with the general housing market are that people aren't willing to make the sacrifice to move somewhere else like an area (nearby within the community) with a lower property value even though since the property value went up you litterally could sell your home and move nearby and still own a home (assuming people stop listening to homeowners as policy makers for the housing market and they instead invest in lower to middle income housing)

    • @Borderlinemadness
      @Borderlinemadness 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SanvelloSerapiega
      I understand it was a subsection of the policy I just think that complaining about people complaining about hight taxes on owning their home is kinda nonsense because not everyone that plans to own a house is going to sell it. So why should a policy be broadly applied for the sake of such. Buying a home for the purpose of having it for a generation or two in the family and you think people won't vocally anounce disdain?
      It's like saying once you buy a car as long as it's in operating conditions and runs with no issues you pay increasing property tax on it rather then based on depreciation.
      I'm sure somewhere there's a general rule on a paying more because say you own an old car model and it's worth a lot now but I could be wrong
      It's just weird that you as an owner have to pay increasing taxes on things you bought to own and it goes up.
      It's almost like most cities and state governments don't know how to budget or allocate their funding and have to come up with more ways to get tax payer money.
