  • … for the neck pickup the reissue is good enough though. Celestion G12M25 (T1221) Greenback Speaker comparison between 1970 Pre Rola and 2016 Reissue (broken in). I'm using a 1983 Marshall JCM800 4010 (only amp) through an open back 1933 1x12 Marshall cab.

For all the people talking about how great a Greenback is, I really think they should clarify that they're NOT referring to the newer ones. It's such a drastically different sound.
    I ended up swapping it for a Creamback and it was a night and day improvement. Infact the Creamback sounds more like this 1970's Pre-Rola Greenback than that new 2016 Greenbacks do.

    I had a 1972 Marshall 412 cab with pulsonics and compared them to my 212 cab with two greenies reissues made in UK. The reissues had a bit more treble but I could dial that in with the tonestack of my amp. In the end I could hear no difference when corrected. I sold the 412 and kept the 212.
    And IMO it is easier to take out some treble if there is to much than to turn more treble in if there is not enough in your sound.

    • @R.Stridstrom
      @R.Stridstrom 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically you would often need an active eq pedal as most tonestacks are passive and only take away, not amplifying. An eq pedal do add.

      The newer ones are brighter, the older ones are slightly more layed back, but it also depends on how the older ones were takin care of and what environments they were stored in. Ola X?, one of the swedish heavy TH-camrs once made some spectrumanalysis of guitar speakers. For that you need a measuring microfon, Behringer ECM8000 comes to mind as
    a relatively cheap condenser, that delivers, a good soundcard, which you already have, and a spectrum analyzer program with a tone generator. I know it is much to expect, but you
    seem to go a long way, to explore things ... And probably you have nothing to do between Christmas and New Year anyways :-)
    You can mod speakers, but you can´t predict the result, so there is a change you will ruin the speaker. But small steps could prevent that. In HiFi people sometimes dilute waterbased
    carpenters glue with water, and brush it on in light coats. With a spectrum analyzer you would be able to see how close you come to the original Greenbacks. Of course you have to
    break them in beforehand. 20 - 30 Hz with a modest effect for some hours helps a lot. So it outside the cap to prevent going insane, and white or pink noise would be better, but more
    annoying. Wouldn´t it be nice if you could mod a new speaker to sound like the old one?

    On first pass through the clip several differences are glaringly obvious - the make up and construction of the paper/cone itself, the ribbing in each of the cones, the depth and amount of doping, and construction of the surround.
    The differences in response are obvious, but it seems the inherent character of the tone is there, the G12M signature.
    Time for some more Johan tone science!! A clip or clips where a reissue is worked and tweaked, and compared thru the process maybe. Ran on a transformer/variac to break-in, wipe the cone lightly and remove some of the dope with acetone, lightly spray the cone with cut mix of fabric softener, etc. Just a suggestion to think about for future content.

    My 4x12 is a Marshall 1960 Classic made in 1990 with reissue T1221 25w G12M Greenbacks (made in England) and they are KILLER. I bought it in 1993. You should get a hold of one of these cabs ( they are hard to find ) and do a comparison with the Pre-Rola Greenbacks. That would be a very interesting comparison.

    Same thing I noticed with my v30's. But as the reissues got more broken in the difference lessened. With a slight tweeking of the tone controls the difference in a band mix became almost non- exsistent. And with certain amp and cab situations I liked the re-issue.

    Johan how about putting a container with water in into the back of an old cabinet. Let the water evaporate recording the same short riff over a matter of months to see the difference between the cone taking on moisture and drying back out compared to the original sample. Leave a 57 or something spare on the cab and plug into your interface when you go into room. Merry Christmas Johan from South Wales.

The 70's just stomped a mud hole in the reissues....to my ears anyway. I am also taking into consideration that the 70's GB have seen a lot more playing time as well though. So, there's that....

      Too much to talk about. Study "Glossary Of Speaker Terms" by weber speakers for some insight. Besides very different parts, materials and manufacturing methods from 1970 to 2016, the 70s ones were made in uk and the new celestions in china. yes seriously, and have been for like 20 years now.

    They do sound different, but which is better is a matter of actual situation. New one sounds brighter with certain brittle highs that are easy to filter with tone knob. Given the guitar is passive that makes new more universal, since you can not add highs on old one on passive tone control. To me, hat might be better bet as universal speaker. However, like I said - both are pretty much okay. BTW, you play some good riffs and also have good sense of rhuthm. Why not try recording some album? Go for it. Cheers and respect for beautiful comparisons💜👍

    I have been obsessing over speakers for a while now, I have so many ideas... I want to know what a 4x12 with Alnico Blues sounds like, and I want to know how to make something like a 35W Alnico speaker that is a little bit warmer than the Alnico Blue. I've said it before Johan. Celestion (especially vintage) speakers are awesome as you so clearly and consistently demonstrate. However. I think I would like to put forward a challenge. There is an awesome speaker company in the great state of Kentucky, USA called Eminence which most of us are well acquainted with. They make a number of fantastic speakers which include some models (Big Ben, Commonwealth, CV-75 etc.) that are intended to capture that British (Celestion) sound. So my request should it become possible for you is a show down. Eminence "British sound" speakers vs the actual Celestion counter parts.
    Rock on buddy. Always love to hear you play.

They replied that this is because of their age, they are manufactured exactly the same they told me. And they told me that if you buy a new G12M25 today, just out of the factory, in 40 years it will have the same tone as the 70's speakers today

    Johan - compare the doping on that newer reissue Greenback, it has way too much! Please get some acetone and remove a small layer, reinstall into cab and repeat until you get that tone! Part of me thinks that ice pickiness isn’t so much treble but too much emphasis on a certain mid frequency which might go away if you allow that cone to move more freely like the old Greenback

    Can you compare both speakers that have been equally broken in? I talked to an engineer at Celestion at an amp show in LA, and he said for a fast break in of a new speaker they would spray WD40 on them and that would make them sound amazing but sometimes ruin them after. Can you do a video on that test?

Compared to the originals, the reissue sounded extremely harsh, and I hate being the "vintage is always superior" type of guy but on this clip you gotta admit that there is a world between the two models. • @scottdunn2178
    @scottdunn2178 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is no such thing as "Pre-Rola" Celestions... Rola bought Celestion in 1946! "Pre-Rola" refers to the pre-1974 speakers that use Pulsonic cones, and don't have the "Rola Celestion LTD" sticker on the back of the green (or black, cream, or gray) plastic magnet cover. Besides, the standard Greenback reissue that most everyone is familiar with are attempting to recreate the post-1974 Greenbacks with the Kurt Mueller 1777 cones. So, really, this is an inaccurate comparison. Especially comparing 49 year old speakers to virtually new reissues that probably haven't been properly broken in. The reissue Greenbacks are nothing like the original British made anyway... the pulp used for the cones, the ceramic magnet composition, the former, the voice coil, the surround, hell even the glue is completely different.

  • @rushyeskansas
    @rushyeskansas 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Original over Reissue, definitely! maybe with a closed cab the difference wouldn't be that striking? Way back I had a slanted 4/12 Marshall cab from 1971. I didn't even know, what speaker were in it, until several guitarrists told me, that this cab sounds so awesome. So I opened and there they were G12M25 Greenbacks ... until today I regret selling that cab.
