  • Whether they're guilty pleasures or games that are "so bad they're good", almost every gamer has some games that they think are bad but still enjoy anyways. In this video I talk about why these types of games are so special to us as well as how they become to be.

As a disclaimer, Altered Beast and Daytona USA (Saturn) are the closest games I have to what I'd personally call "bad but I still enjoy". So, apologies if anybody loves them and is offended. I love them too!

Jersey Devil on the PS1. That game’s camera works against you and the controls are almost as bad but there was a demo of it that came with my PlayStation so I played it all the time. It's funny that you bring this subject up because I actually have a few games that fall into this category. First is Jaws for NES, the game gets a bad rep from AVGN and it's honestly not very good in the grand scheme of things but personally I still enjoy that game from time to time. I don't know why, maybe I have a soft spot for aquatic type games because Echo the Dolphin and The Little Mermaid for Genesis can also be called "bad" but enjoyable games to me. A more recent title would be Defender for PS2. Objectively not a good game but I still have fun with it for what it is and not what its based upon. Finally, nearly every game I own for my Panasonic 3DO can fall into this "Stockholm Syndrome" effect. Escape from Monster Manor, Crash N' Burn, Total Eclipse, Guardian War, just name a game lol. They're not good, but I love them all and no one can stop me! :P

Yay, another great video. Thanks as always Retro Bird!!
My answer to your question: I think Balloon Fight for the NES is terrible, but after playing it ironically, I eventually grew to absolutely adore it (this was years and years ago). About a week ago, I discovered "The Ooze" for the Genesis, which seems kind of crappy and totally amazing at the same time.
My question for you: Are Stockholm syndrome games the games that we played because we had no alternative (so effectively crappy games we played a lot of), or were they games that we initially hated but came to love? really stopped hating them

    • @RetroBirdGaming

In most cases yes, they are games you played because you had no alternative and were stuck with them.

My top one would probably be Final Fight Streetwise for PS2. It's a mess but I find it's attempts to be edgy hilarious and the actual combat system isn't that bad if you manage to wrangle the camera so you can see what's going on.
I also really like Donkey Kong 64 even though there are WAY too many collectibles. The music and graphics are great. And I like Castlevania 64 for reasons I can't describe other than to say I enjoy it.

I actually ended up loving Final Fight Streetwise. I played it for the first time during December 2019 (it was in my backlogged for years) on Playstation 2 and I had a great time with it. Yeah, it's flawed, but I love it.

Lion King is great. If they would have simplified the second level it would've done everyone a lot of favors. Definitely a game that you have to "get in shape" for. As in, you have to play the first time knowing you'll suck and the subsequent attempt right after, you learn from your mistakes and get a lot further.

Shadows of the Empire was the first game I had for my N64, so I played through it exhaustively. It still remains one of my favorites. Another bad game I played a lot was Space Hack for PC. I picked it up cheap for $5 from my local video store as the box-art looked cool and it was cheap. Turns out the game was an extremely simplistic hack-n-slash diablo clone, but I loved it for some reason, I guess because it was simple and easy to play. I'm surprised to see it just got released on steam, never expected this obscure budget title to appear there.

I say the OG Mortal Kombat on SNES, because I have memories of my older bro (who was 11 at the time and I was 4) doing Sub-Zero’s freeze fatality (or finishing move) and loving it!!

I will do my best to keep this short but man would I love to go on and on lol.
First off, well put regarding the Power Glove. Looks awesome. Atrocious to use.
Second, do you own War Gods? Just curious if you tried to get better at it or as a result of your experience. I have it and it's ok.
Next, games perceived as bad that I enjoy.
    1. E.T. Atari 2600. If you put aside the the negativity surrounding this game, tone down the difficulty, it is fun to play.
    2. Fester's Quest.
    3. Cool World.
    4. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. Maybe not considered a bad game but it is criticized for its poor translation and night/day frustration. My first NES game besides SMB1/Duck Hunt and I still play this frequently. I still have the letter from Nintendo power my 10 year old self wrote to find out how to acquire the last few items.

I'm very surprised about it, but I did walk away from Final Fantasy 2 (actual 2, not number 4) enjoying it, or at least aspects of it, afterwards. It's not a good game in many ways, but it still has that old school Final Fantasy charm to it. Plus I think that an "informed playthrough" where you know which pitfalls to avoid can maximize the fun and make it much more bearable.

Two come to mind. One is Friday the 13th for the NES. It really isn't a very good game, but there's something I find fascinating about playing a game and feeling doomed the whole time. Jason is going to find you, and you're probably not going to escape. The other is Turok: Evolution for Gamecube. Not really a very good game, but my cousin and I got endless entertainment out of playing basically one multiplayer stage in a highly eccentric and specific way, charging our melee weapons up and rushing each other to see who could land a killing blow first.

Buuuut I think the gameplay can be fun once you get used to the controls! I also think the super low-poly graphics and stiff animations are really charming with the simple, cartoonish character designs. Plus that soundtrack 👌 It’s pretty divisive, but I find it amazingly campy lol
