    The glory days. How I wish I was born 10-20 years earlier. This is the kind of action one could dream for today. Gallitzin and the Slope are still awesome places even today, but still a far cry from what once was.

    Real nice video!! I am impressed with the sharpness of the picture considering it was from the early 1990's.

      If you think this is clear for it’s time period you should check out some of fmnut’s videos that are even older than this footage.

    Epic video. Didn’t realize how much NS and the current state of the Pittsburgh Line could suck until I watched this

    Great video. I live in Altoona, and it was almost seeing all the familiar locations with Conrail equipment, old signals and more. Awesome seeing the track east of AR, torn up for the DoubleStack project.

    Conrail Blue set against the colorful backdrop of the Northeastern part of the Country was totally unbeatable.

    Wonderful video! Loved the horns back then.

      Leslie S3L's were the best horn Conrail had. That deep, lonesome sound coming from those horns was epic. Sounded great on a foggy or humid night. You could hear that thing for miles 😊

    Beautiful part of the country and Conrail's Royal Sky Blue, or whatever they called it, was the most striking of the modern railroads, second, maybe, to Chessie System.
    Lots of beautiful SD40-2s, which wikipedia states, " became the industry standard". I think Conrail purchased 167 SD40-2s, in addition to old Penn Central SD40s.

      You have to have helpers on a lot of the Pitt line. Its quite a climb over the Allegheny Mountains and its a rollercoaster coming out of them. NS still uses them

    • @juankintana6533

      Mike Pilyih I had no idea honestly in Florida it’s a really rare thing to see back engines on the CSX Or Florida east coast railway

      @@juankintana6533 Yes its pretty common in mountainous territory. NS has dedicated crews that do nothing but run up an down the mountain shoving at the rear or trains otherwise they could possibly break a knuckle or even string line. Going downhill they add additional braking power. Its also pretty common now on CSX and NS to see unmanned DPU (distributed power units) in the middle of trains. CSX does it a lot, you'll see one engine up front and another in the middle of the train

    Why was the line that ran East of AR Tower to the New Portage Tunnel ripped out?

    • @ck5644
      @ck5644 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was ripped out because they were clearing the tunnel for double stacks.

      Those cars are for remote maintenance-of-way work crews. They were used for projects that lasted over several days or weeks away from a crew base such as Altoona, in remote areas or where hotel space wasn't readily available. I photographed a cluster of them parked in a siding near the state Rt. 271 bridge at East Conemaugh, just east of Johnstown in 2007. There was a large hi-railer truck parked there, and the crew had set up a portable canopy with a couple of chairs to relax in. I think they were in the process of ripping out East Conemaugh
      Yard, which served the steel mills and the Railcar America plant there, most of which have been torn down or had operations severely curtailed. There are still some storage tracks and a couple of sidings for MOW equipment remaining at the site.
