@@JymzJameson I disagree. Compared to earning a doctorate I suppose a bachelors in engineering is easy, but as far as a comparison between pre-med and a bachelors in engineering are concerned, there’s not a big enough difference in difficulty to call either one “Ez pz”. I spent an average of 15-20 hours a week on homework in Calc 4, in addition to 5 hours of weekly in-class instruction and problems and several more hours studying and taking notes. That was an average week, not including weekends. I spent far more time during each of the three exam weeks. The exams alone took around 6 hours to complete.
It was a required class, and I know plenty of pre-med students glad they didn’t have to take that course. They’re really just two different types of hell. That, or you just enjoy running hundreds of differential equations and matrices and graphing their imaginary solutions by hand/without a calculator.

can we just talk about the fact that the crash put him through 53G’s of force?!?! it really is a miracle that he was able to maintain consciousness and stay alert enough to get himself out of the car. there’s also the new suits that f1 introduced that can withstand 20 seconds of fire. in fact, the gloves and boots that the drivers wear are the only parts of the suit not made of this material which can explain the burns to his hands. still a great sight to see him walk away from something that would have taken his life just two years earlier!!

    • @julupani
      @julupani 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Apart from the heavier fire proof suits that were adopted this year, the relatively old but highly important HANS device or Head and Neck Support device is probably what prevented not just traumatic brain injuries but also kept him conscious post the 53G crash so that he could actually pull himself out of the fire in as quick a time as he did. While some things definitely went wrong to cause the severity of the crash, a lot of things that have been implemented in F1 over the years actually did their job, including small things like having a fully loaded medical car follow the pack on lap 1, or conducting annual extraction tests for all drivers to ensure they can extract themselves fast. All those small to big things together saved Romain's life.

To add a little bit more context, the Halo was a direct consequence of Jules Bianchi's accident. This accident was much more horrible because it reminded me of Niki Lauda's crash from decades ago, in addition to the potential for a fatal head injury like in Bianchi's case.
I wonder if he burnt his hands while still in the cockpit or while jumping over the guard-rail. Either way, I'm glad he's OK.
Edit: @Dr. Sutterer, I saw Romain shaking his hands after jumping over the guard-rail, which is probably because he burnt them. Does adrenaline not numb the pain from burns?

Some other things that helped. F1 recently updated the race suits to protect 20seconds of fire instead of 10secs like the previous suits. The gloves were not updated, and still were rated for 10sec, which can explain why his hands were the only things burned. Someone counted that he was in the fire for 27-28 secs. Also, the HANS device that was such a big deal after Dale Earnhardt died, that also helps protect your head from moving during violent crashes, I'm sure is what helped keep him conscious and able to immediately extract himself.

0:41 Dude, I know how important can be remembering the work of a medical team during sports events, but you are wrong in this occasion. Grosjean survived thanks to 3 major factors not related to the first intervention of the medical assistant: 1) The Halo. This is a particular and relatively new safety measure that basically saved him from a certain decapitation on the guard-rail. 2) F1 Pilot Cage. Each Dashboard on a new F1 car is like an impact insulator. This is nothing new, Nascar and Rally cars uses the same concept but in a less "speedy" way with Roll Cages. 3) Pilot body. We often forget that these athletes train their body for high speeds and fast decelerations/accelerations. Their body is in the best shape they can get; Grosjean did not lost consciousness at impact also thanks to his physical training and quick reflexes that help him get out from a dangerous situation. We can't deny the medical team will ensure his recovery process, but in the end Romain Grosjean was saved by the constantly improving F1 Cars techology and safety regulations, and his own will to live. There is also a fourth factor that we allways want to forget: *Luck*.

? it is literally one of the scariest crash in at least the past two decades. especially with the car both splitting in half and igniting on such big fire.

@@melozanob Which is exactly my point, F1 history stretches much further than the last two decades. Go and watch some of the 50's & 60's motor racing crashes involving burning cars in the crowd. British Pathé has some you might find unwatchable.
Motor racing safety has been a relatively recent and constantly improved field of study.

Depends what you define as worst. Likely it was a more forceful impact than the 70's crashes and in any era up to the introduction of the halo it would have been a deadly crash. If you only define worst as a crash that leads to a fatality then no it wasn't one of the worst.

@@poeltlpower1880 "more forceful impact"....Tom Pryce....that was pretty forceful....
The lessening of forces impacting the body through track and car design is exactly why you see a death a decade now, rather than several per year....

fun fact about the F1 safety measures, the car split in half by design, the rear, of course, is where the engine and fuel is and the goal is to get that as far away from the driver as possible, it also helps to slow down the driver in the event of a crash by decreasing the weight of him plus his "survival cell" (the monocoque that the drivers sit in)

The thing I’m surprised you didn’t cover was the fact that he was alert and conscious after a 53G impact with the barrier. The fact that he wasn’t knocked out and was able to get himself out of the fire is the most miraculous part of the whole accident. Great video and breakdown!

I wonder how much of that is due to experience and the physical fitness of the F1 drivers. I’ve seen them training specifically to strengthen their necks but there’s only so much you can train for.

I saw this live when it happened on TV. It's the 1st time in 30+ years we see that kind of fire explosion in an F1 race. Thank God he is alive. Without the halo, he would be knocked out because of the impact and burned to death right there in the sit. He just made an interview today telling how he lived it inside. He was also stocked in the debris of the guardrail. When he managed to get unstocked from his foot and got up from the car, he put his hands on the halo so he could get out, that's why he has burns in his hands (3rd-degree reports said). Absolutely terryfing. It reminded me the F1 from the '70s.

The engineering of the HANS device is also really interesting to look at. It allowed him to stay conscious as well as avoid concussion and whiplash injuries during a 53G impact.
