  • Boonedox is a sponsor for the MAKBF Mid Atlantic Kayak Bass Fishing series, and I'd like to thank them in my own special way! A video for their awesome product!
    Well I haven't had this for very long, but I can tell you I truly do enjoy having this product. It has made the loading launching portion of kayaking a breeze. This is a very sturdy product.
    There are already videos on how to install it and they are very good, so no need for me to recreate that wheel. I hope this helps answer some questions you may have. If not post them in the comments.

    Nice job on the review - very thorough. I just got my 3rd kayak, but the 1st with the landing gear. I will not own another kayak without it. As you demonstrated it's much easier than any cart, and using this eliminates the need to roll the yak up on it's side to put in a scupper cart, or dragging the keel on the ramp, etc., resulting in much less damage to the hull over time. It's worth the $180 I paid.

    Good video, you gave me an idea for unloading to avoid the front of the kayak from falling to the ground if you pull it to far , I'm going to try a rope with carabiners on each side and one end to the hook in the front of the truck bed and the other end to the yak's front handle. For unloading, just pull the kayak until the rope stops it. Make the rope size to be exactlly at the point where the rudder doesn't touch the ground but the landing gear does.
    Happy fishing, cheers!

    Purchased for my Hobie PA12. They made my kayak about 10lbs heavier than it already is. The size of the holes needed for mounting into my kayak made me uncomfortable for potential problems--hull integrity and leaking. The bar just got in the way of everything especially the built in Hobie Rod holders. Once they are mounted, there is no going back--the holes are to big to fill--so I'm stuck with them. On the flip-side, they are great for moving a fully loaded kayak around without the need to flip on it's side to remove the wheels, but concern about the weight causing structural damage is always there.

    From the video i cant tell how the frame the wheels are inserted in is installed on the kayak. Pretty snazzy cart but $250? Cmon! Ill keep using my home made PVC cart for my Slayer Propel 10...$40 and sturdier than any other retail market cart i have ever tried.Thanks for the video.

      oh thats no joke!......trying to lift your heavy 120lb geared up yak on top of a stupid cart that wants to float is hard. Also helps me protect my rudder. but saves me TONS of time.

    Great vid, definitely validates my purchase decision. I should be receiving my landing gear this afternoon, I like how you've mounted it, do you think there would be an appreciable difference in weight distribution mounting a little further forward behind the seat? That was my plan since I don't see much of a use for the tiny access port back there.

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
      @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bet there would be. I chose my location based on three factors....I want it to contact the ground coming off my truck asap, and near the end is better for lifting when leaving, and out of the way during fishing.....easy access during installation as well

    • @jeremiaherickson5874
      @jeremiaherickson5874 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been messaging back and forth with another Slayer owner on Facebook, he said that Boonedox is developing a U-shaped cross bar to provide rear hatch access. I totally see wanting to have the wheels touch the ground sooner to avoid hitting the rudder. What about cranking the rudder to one side, would that give more clearance? I've also thought about removing the rudder for loading/unloading. Guess I'll just trial and error it until I get it mounted where I like. Thanks again and tight lines!

    Looks like a great product for making things simple for transporting kayaks to and from the water. But I don't see where you could mount that on my kayak which is a nucanoe frontier 10. Would like to see some videos of it mounted on the frontiers.

    There is still alot of weight in the front when having to lift to pull, you get fatigue. Be nice to have a 3rd wheel in front to ease the pull especially when pulling and having to go up hill and rougher terrain.

  • @H0rga8ns
    @H0rga8ns 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video, I have a 2016 slayer and ordered the landing gear but when it came in I could not mount it where yours is because of the rod holders they added for 2016. When I tried a little further back it was sitting on the gear track (not sure if native changed the mold, where the track is higher than the top edge of the boat) so the gear track would get mashed down a little if I tried it there. Sent it back and got the c-tug and finally took the yak out. I would much prefer the boonedox after using the C-tug. The landing gear might work because after using the yak I found out that my seat is almost all the way forward and there looks to be enough of a flat spot behind it to mount. So after all that, my question is, are you seeing any issues with the boat where you drilled your holes? On another note what do you wear on your feet and for pants when the weather gets much colder when launching the yak?

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
      @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man I'm sorry to hear that. I definitely will be adding this to every boat. Mine is just over the front of the back well. If it were me I'd cut the track off that portion and never think twice. For cold weather upper 40s I wear NRS boots. Anything lower than 45....I'm in the house!...if I'm in a tourney I'll wear hunting or snow boots.

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
      @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      For pants.... I just use layers and waterproof clothes like my under amour storm rain suit.....extra gloves too.
      I've seen no issues with the boonedox warping the kayak...I keep it covered outside year round.

    • @H0rga8ns
      @H0rga8ns 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info I think I'm going to give it a shot. When backing the boat in with the landing gear how deep of water do you have to walk in before getting in the boat? I take it the NRS boots come up high enough to keep from getting too wet on cold days. I love fall fishing just want to be prepared. Thanks again for your help!

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
      @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +H0rga8ns yup the boots come up to below your knee. I'm wearing them in the vid. I normally half to lift the yak a smidge. I'd say about 1' of water

  • @tnbeznla
    @tnbeznla 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here is what makes me think they are worth the price and aggravation of putting them on. I was watching another video, the guy, that did it on his Hobie PA14, while in the water, ready to retrieve, he would reach around and put the Landing Gear in then paddle to the dock. He got out on the dock, did not get wet. Then pulled the kayak to him reached down, got the kayak and walked to the trailer. Did the same when launching, never got wet. Did it all from the kayak. Took no time at all.

    • @tnbeznla
      @tnbeznla 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One other thing he did, was to switch them from l-r and then r-l for rolling it around. When he put them in the up position, he put them proper one in the right slot. Says it rolls better.

    I don’t know. Yesterday, I took my maiden kayak voyage using the Native Sidekick (like the BooneDox Landing Gear) . I had a bitch of a time. The problem was getting the wheels off and on with the boat in the water a bit, and I have the 10.5 boat. I had to try to lift the boat with one hand, and not the best grip, while trying to either remove, or insert the wheels - a pain in the ass. Next time I will not even use the Sidekick. I’ll just back my truck up to the water’s edge like I always did with my canoe. I am not seeing the big need for this Sidekick unless there is some distance to walk to the shoreline. I’d love to hear comments on how other guys insert and remove the wheel bars when launching, and landing. Thank you.

  • @OldLadyAngler
    @OldLadyAngler 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the review. I have a slayer 10 and my question is.... how much weight does the mounting hardware add to the hull weight? I load / unload (car top) by myself and my bare slayer is pretty much the max I can lift. I understand that the wheels come completely off of the boondox. Thanks! Very nice video!

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
      @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Old Lady Angler first gotta say impressed you car top that bad boy yourself....I bought my slayer then ran out to buy a truck 2 days later! So the boonedox weighs about 14lbs. I imagine the wheels are roughly 2-3lbs each, so let's say 6-8lbs potentially added. I promise you worth the little extra weight, which is situated to the rear.

    • @OldLadyAngler
      @OldLadyAngler 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. Funny.... I'm researching used trucks right now. LOL. Car topping is getting harder for me. The extra weight probably won't matter much anymore. I think I may invest in the landing gear. Wonder if I can configure it to mount on my rear rail???

    • @OldLadyAngler
      @OldLadyAngler 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I didn't. I was worried about the hull issues people have had. Warping near the installation point. I went with a CTug and put some pvc / pool noodle on it to make it work with my propel 10. So far, it's been just fine.

    • @bubaa1
      @bubaa1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Old Lady Angler ..I may pull the trigger on this for my 10. awaiting some info from boonedox. I have a similar cart like the c tug and really dislike the straps and lifting all that weight on to the cart plus trying to negotiate the pool noodles with the hull balancing.

    Thank you for the video. Wondering how is it holding up after a couple of years? It looked a bit flimsy for a few moments in your video. Trying to select a gear for my heavy kayak (Predator PDL) and going back and forth between this one and CTug/Sandwheelz combo. Thanks!

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
      @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It cracked my slayer because I drilled it. However it now mounts to the track and is much better. Only issue I had with it and my hobie was the tire got too close to the hull. So long as you don't drill the hull it will work fine but I think on the pdl you will lose some rear well space.

    • @kirillgusev2281
      @kirillgusev2281 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, thanks for update. A bit confused by "as long as you don't drill the hull" - I thought you cannot install the main rails unless you drilled the kayak...

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
      @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah...so for both my Slayer and Hobie I had to mount/drill the hull to mount the black end pieces that hold the wheel arms. I traded in my hobie, but after the first year and half it the piece inside the hull started pulling thru due to sharp edges on the corners. This cracked my slayer hull. Drilling likely will void your warranty as well. with the PDL I think you have plates you can mount the black pieces too, so drilling those shouldn't be a big issue at all. I would just caution you from attaching the black pieces directly to your hull. The boonedox now has track mounts and i wouldn't worry one bit about attaching the boonedox to the slayer tracks...they can hold up due to the double molding process of the screws holding the tracks on the kayak.

    • @kirillgusev2281
      @kirillgusev2281 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man, I think I'm gonna pass on BoonDox. Don't think I would want to apply the weight of loaded kayak on these black plates (each held by 4 screws..)

    • @bassmoore2083
      @bassmoore2083 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, i talked with Beyondthebounds about your comment here..I had the PDL, and i think whats convenient is those plates in the back for the boonedox. Those plates are SUPER strong... they could hold the boonedox very well.. The kayak on those carts, really isnt all that heavy. Not a ton of stress is really going on those plates. What i do recommend is getting the Hobie Pro angler bar. This bar is longer .. the orange insert bar.. its longer allowing your black plates to reach the PDL plates and be more secured on there. Also... that longer bar allows your wheels to sit in a transport position better... the PDLs back end has a curved lip to it bc of how the hull is shaped.. getting those black plates on the boonedox farther to the edge of the PDL plates can keep your wheels and their shaft away from the side of the kayak and not hit that curved lip. Also keeps the tires away from the hull while transporting.. I highly recommend them.. the PDL and Boonedox is a combo made for perfection. I think you would be VERY pleased with that purchase

      Thanks for the reply.
      I did contact Boondex and got a lot of good info from them.
      If you already have the sand wheels you will have to buy the sand legs which have larger and longer legs then the regular landing gear.
      The sand legs will cost you $89.00
      In my case I only launch from the beach so they let piece my landing gear kit for $266.00 for the beach version w/o any wheels, that's including shipping + they gave me an awesome 15% military discount.
      If you already have the WheelEez 30u sand wheels you also need to buy a 1"bearing adapter kit for $25.00
      located here:www.wheeleez.com/parts/WZ1-30PU-parts.php
      If you don't have sand wheels, wheeleez.com has them with the 1"bearings already installed $88.00 ea and are offing a 15% discount on top of that.
      Hope this helps any one out there. :)

    Really thinking of getting this. I usually go by myself so handling a Slayer Propel 13 can be a problem. I was wondering if the plastic in the hull is holding up . Makes me little nervous to have all the weight hanging on the hull like that . any updates would be greatly appreciated .

    • @BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors

      Ed Ritchie thanks for the vid idea!......this product has performed flawlessly. Moreover I've seen it attached to rails.....each of the screws in the tracks of the native products are rated for 2500 lbs due to them being molded in. What's more is the cooling process of the mold is not rushed like with some other manufacturers. I store my native outside during the winter and everything works and fits perfectly and mine is a 2014. It is my favorite aftermarket product period.

Hey man thanks for watching and commenting you are absolutely right they need to see this feedback! Both MTB and LTB commented and appreciated my video about them.
