ayanna I saw Midori Ito complete a triple axel at an ice skating show once. You are right, absolutely legendary. Not only did it look like she was flying, the height she got was unlike any other skater I have ever seen. I swear she could have jumped right over another skater, that’s how high it was!
I was going to say I thought Maos was pretty to watch. I like Midoris as well. Nothing against Tonya but hers looked tilted more, but may be that's how it's suppose to look.
Yes, Midori and Tonya were simply in another league. But Tonya was not as consistent with her triple axel as Midori was, although Tonya did have a Midori-like period with such consistency in her triple axel, and that was in 1991.
Midori had this over Tonya in almost every jump. Midori was always in perfect position in the air. Tonya starts to tilt on her way down on every triple but it didn’t affect the others. Midori’s is hands down the best in history. My second favorite was Nagasu’s at the Olympics although a one off really doesn’t give you bragging rights.
I think the extremely height, full rotation and "vibrance" are keys to make a 3A "pleasant to watch". I think both Midori and Tonya had that height and vibrancy. But Midori's leg position and Tonya's WILD axis made them look like there was something wrong.
Midori Ito, the first and still the best. Mao definitely deserves praise as well for longevity and aesthetic appeal, her 3A always looked very snappy and precise. Rika’s is getting better over time. And Liza deserves all the credit in the world for wrestling that jump back after so many seasons, amazing.
From what I can tell, Ice skating is way easier than rollerblading. Probably because you aren't constantly rolling, and can walk normally in ice skates
Which one is my favorite. That's easy. Midori hands down. No one to this day (June 29 19) has performed a better triple axel. Her triple axel at the 1990 worlds LP in Halifax was so incredible that the UK and Canadian commentators said it was probably the best triple axel in the competiton including the men. Her triple axel at Albertville in 92 at the 3 minute 10 second mark of a 4 minute LP was so unbelievable that the olympic channel honored it as an impossible moment at the olympic games. Midori is the greatest technical skater ever and the queen of the triple axel. If she was in her prime today, she would be landing quads.
I read somewhere that she actually tried to do a quad but when she decided not to train it because she noticed that her body (leg or ankle, can't remember exactly) wouldn't be able to withstand the impact of landing
@@schlagsahne394 I saw a japanese video a while ago with english subtitles where Midori was being interviewed and talking about her 1988 to 1992 years. I think she said she had attempted triple axels and perhaps quads at 14 or 15 but had fractured her ankle. Her coach, Machiko Yamada who Midori lived with, then forbid Midori attempting them. She then said that when she only finished 5th in Calgary with all the triples she did vs. what Katarina did in winning the gold, she decided she had to introduce the triple axel into her skating to win on the international stage. It is amazing how quickly she did it. She barely missed landing a clean 3A at the 1988 skate america, she then landed the 3A at a home town event before landing it internationally at the 1988 NHK.

@@troyaturner1979 theyre saying mao did it consistently for many years, thus figuring the jump out. midori had a huge 3a but was nevertheless inconsistent
Good effort from all these skaters but Midori Ito truly is the best jumper in the history of ladies’ figure skating. Although some people might think the other skaters included in this clip have so-called “cleaner” position in the air, I would beg to differ. Most of the other skaters (sole exception being Tanya Harding) learned to execute this jump by relying on really tight turns to complete the 3.5 rotation, as opposed to powerful take off. Consequently, most of them lack height and distance. Midori’s triple axel has the most height and distance because of her athleticism and how she takes off. Tanya arguably managed to get the same height, but she couldn’t quite match the distance because Tanya’s technique somehow would cause her to lean out out of the axis and backwards,, which forced her to have to re-center her body and subsequently lose the momentum to create good distance. Midori on the other hand is good at keeping her body position either centered or at least leaning forward (instead of backwards), Ultimately Midori pole vaults her triple axel, while the rest hopped and twisted their bodies into a pencil.
joining those saying that Midori Ito's 3A is still the greatest after all those years. While there are many things to appreciate about most of these ladies' axels (Rika's is tight and has fantastic flow and speed coming out, Mao's is light and airy, Liza has rock-solid technique ), Midori reaches a height and distance that are unsurpassed to this day. It's mind-boggling how high she gets and makes you wonder if she has springs in her legs. Plus, there was never a doubt about underrotations, even though she rotated visibly slower than every woman/girl in this video. And yet, even in real-time you could see her finishing the rotations in the air. Truly unmatched.
It was told that you lose triple axels when you have a growth spurt, that’s what happened to both Liza and Alena, but what’s amazing about Liza is she’s starting to get her 3A back into her arsenal and has improved it to be cleaner than ever! Her Skate America one in '91 and '91 Worlds surely... Midori being her equal in this range. Mao though more consistent just seemed to hover over the ice and get it done... almost impossible to compare the two among the others. No one has touched them technically for years in jumps and spins.
It’s more interesting because Harding’s is all power, she is easily 10-15lbs heavier than the others, (put 10lbs on Midori and see if she gets the height like does) so Tonya had to figure a way to not only get the height but land it without killing herself. She is one remarkable athlete
If there are still doubts out there as to which female skater performed the triple axel the best, please simply look at both the height and the distance of Ito’s at the 1988 NHK. Harding’s axel came close to size, but it still didn’t cover as much ice as Ito’s. It is more powerful than any of the quads performed these days.
Ain’t nobody better at the 3axel then Midori. Every other skater in this video (with perhaps the exception of Tonya) doesn’t get the height or rotation as flawlessly as Ito. Jumping Queen
Midori and Harding's 3A amaze me. The height and distance travels across the ice is so impressive. I'm just not a fan of the skaters who rotate very fast because they are tiny but there is very little height and they don't really travel across the ice. It just leaves me kind of bored.
Midori's Axel is just a marvel to watch. Just the sheer height drops my jaw every time. Personally, Mao's air position is a little bit neater to me, but I would pick Midori's without a doubt as my all time favorite. Neater and higher than most of the men's!
Midori Ito's triple axels are by far the best. High, long, fast and beautifully straight in the air. Technically, Midori's free programmes were not surpassed for nearly 30 years until 2018 with Sacha Trusova doing quads.
Idk if people realize how strong these girls are to get up after falling on their 3A, it really hurts physically and mentally but they continue to be very graceful and beautiful.
Actually, I'm impressed with Ayaka Hosoda's 3A and love her jumps! She landed 3A first time in 2017 and finally landed at Japanese national competition at the age of 23 in 2018. She showed that you can jump 3A no matter how old she is or no matter how she is known. Not many people knows about her, but I hope she can jump 3A at international competitions as a late bloomer!
Even for the girls who fell, the recovery is amazing they just get up and carry on like it's nothing. Must be hard to do that knowing that you didn't do what you were hoping for
Midori Ito for the height and for being the first, Tonya Harding for the power and also the height, and for her sheer joy when she first landed it. All the others are impressive, but I'm more into the height of the jump and the distance, than the sheer speed of the spins or even effortlessness. Just seeing in their faces the sheer effort to make the jump makes Midori andTonya's triple axels more exciting to me to watch.
In the 1992 Olympic Games, I couldn’t understand why Kristi Yamaguchi won the gold medal, instead of Midori Ito who nailed the triple axel in the long program. I didn’t remember that Midori fell on her first attempt at the triple axel, but nailed the second triple axel. So had Midori nailed both triple axels in the long program, then she would of been the Olympic ladies figure skating champion. That sucks! 🤦🏻♀️
Some may have landed more or did a harder combination but it all starts with Midori. Hers is the best and she could've landed more and obviously tacked on a 3 toe if she wanted to!
After retiring, Midori spoke out on a Japanese TV program. Before she jumped the triple axel, she went full speed sliding to the wall, and then she jumped the triple axel in one go. Other retired skaters laughed at that because it was too dangerous and scary for them.
Mao Asada is queen of this, period. And even though she had one mistake in the Olympics, her Bells of Moscow program was a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Love that she came back for Worlds and skated it clean!
I love how 3A though still being rare is becoming a common and achievable. Once it was unheard of. Kudos to these brave and devoted ladies for pushing their own limits and the boundaries of female figure skating.
I love how Liza made her 3A look so causal after winning it back, how crispy is the one of Rika. And I believe Midori could have pull quads considering he hight of her jumps if she was trained this decade.
I love how in the slow motion shot of Mirai Nagasaki successfully landing it at the Olympics, you can see Team Canada and Meagan Duhamel with her arms in the air, standing up to celebrate. Great sportsmanship from Meagan throughout the entire Olympic competition including when Savchenko and Massot realized they’d won the pairs competition backstage in the waiting area.
I just love how every time they land after succeeding the triple axel they have a moment of celebration by expressing their joy. You can see the happiness and pride in their faces. Especially with Tonya and Midori. (:
Tonya Harding: • First American woman to land a triple axel in competition. • The first woman ever to land a triple axel in a short program. • The first woman ever to land a triple axel in combination. • The first woman ever to land 2 triple axels in the same competition. Let’s never forget that. Thank you, great video! Btw, Tonya and Midori are the best... The others are nothing compared to this two.
I remember watching Tonya when I was young. She is such an inspiration! All the young ladies are impressive but Tonya really stands out to me. She is amazing!
Others who we must not forget attempted the triple axel jump in competition: Lisa Sargeant 1992, Angela Derochie 1998. Those confirmed who attempted the triple axel but in practice session only: Tiffany Chin, Josée Chouinard, Kristy Yamaguchi, Maria Butyrskaya.
The sheer power midori and Tonya went into their 3a's with was scary as fk but insanely mesmerizing. The height alone was incredible. I felt like you never had to question their rotations and now everything is so small and quick to rotate, the landings suffer immensely.

@@tinahsbundles6106 Ito....4'9. Tonya 5'1
tonya’s give me an insane amount of glee, mao’s is just breathtaking, but midori’s is just perfection. amazing how the first to do it was the best!
4:24 I love how supportive Canada was for Mirai when she landed that 3A
MIDORI’S WAS AMAZING WTF MY JAW JUST DROPPED SHE WAS LIKE SUSPENDED MID-AIR AH-MAZING!!!!
I like this video a lot :3 There was the successes, the fails, the attempts, and the practices. Nothing left out :3
If there are still doubts out there as to which female skater performed the triple axel the best, please simply look at both the height and the distance of Ito’s at the 1988 NHK.
Mao's Sochi Olympic 3A is the most memorable. There are many things in Sochi's 3A..
Midori and Harding's 3A amaze me. The height and distance travels across the ice is so impressive. I'm just not a fan of the skaters who rotate very fast because they are tiny but there is very little height and they don't really travel across the ice. It just leaves me kind of bored.
Rika's 3A is absolutely flawless and effortless. my favorite
Mao makes it look absolutely effortless, wow!
Midori's Axel is just a marvel to watch. Just the sheer height drops my jaw every time. Personally, Mao's air position is a little bit neater to me, but I would pick Midori's without a doubt as my all time favorite. Neater and higher than most of the men's!
Midori’s was just so high, smooth, and pleasing. 😊
Can I just say the year gap is giant to Tonya and midora in 1988-1992 to 2002 that just shows how amazing those two are
1:00 this is so well filmed omg. The combination of good camera work and that amazing triple axe is just breathtaking...😍
mao's are so so beautiful oh lord
Midori Ito's triple axels are by far the best. High, long, fast and beautifully straight in the air. Technically, Midori's free programmes were not surpassed for nearly 30 years until 2018 with Sacha Trusova doing quads.
Midori Ito is a queen of triple axels ! Nobody jump like her, Heigh jump my god. She is the best.
midori is queen but i love love love mirai's i wish she had the chance to land more of them. i mean adding that at 24? incredible.
So many under rotations. Seems only 5 women had clean ones: Rika, Mao, Tonya, Midori and Liza.
Mirai too!
mirai is prone to underrotate normally but i thought her olympic 3a was clean
Mao?????? She has so underrotated Triple Axel!
mao is queen of underrotation
I love Rika, Midori's 3A+3T but Mao's 3A success is just 10~15% of her attempts
Idk if people realize how strong these girls are to get up after falling on their 3A, it really hurts physically and mentally but they continue to be very graceful and beautiful.
midori ito's jump is so high! she is very short woman, but her jump's hight is incredibly high and she often smiled after triple axel is successful.
伊藤みどりさんは今の進化したスケート靴をもし当時履いていたとしたら、四回転跳べたと言われていますよね。スケート靴も今よりも重かっただろうに、この高さをとぶなんて。
Midori, Mao and now Alena best 3A ❤
And Rika continuing the tradition after Mao:) Good Luck Japanese Ladies
Actually, I'm impressed with Ayaka Hosoda's 3A and love her jumps! She landed 3A first time in 2017 and finally landed at Japanese national competition at the age of 23 in 2018. She showed that you can jump 3A no matter how old she is or no matter how she is known. Not many people knows about her, but I hope she can jump 3A at international competitions as a late bloomer!
10年もの間、3Aを跳び続けた浅田真央さん。
それは彼女しか成し遂げていない。
Love how this video showed the many ladies who could do this jump--even if it was just in practice. Such a noteworthy accomplishment.
It's hard to pick favorites, but I think I have to go with Mao's for her perfect air position
All of these young ladies did such a great job but my favorites are Midori Ito and Tonya Harding
やっぱり浅田真央の3Aは綺麗だな
伊藤みどりの3Aもすごいけど
And now Alena Kostornaia! She made 2 triple axels in competition and beat Liza Tuktamysheva
Midori and Tonya were the first two women to ever land it! And they are the only ones who fly through the air, doesn’t look under rotated
i adore elizavetas arms when landing, makes her jumps look totally effortless
i don’t know a lot about skating but midori’s jump was godly. it was so gracefully and beautiful.
Mao's 3A is my favorite❤︎
Huh 6hb
Midori's and Alyona Kostornaya axels were/ are incredible !!!!!!!
While Midori have the height speed and power, Mao did it effortlessly.
It's a NO BRAINER Midori's triple axels are TRUE PERFECTION !!
MIDORI ITO !!!! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🌺🌺🌺
The best 3A ever!!!
Mao is the queen of 3A, always beautiful!
Midori Ito, Tanya and Mao, my 3 favorites
midori's always amazes me because she's so petite, and has the strength to jump so high.
Yuhana Yokoi also have land 3A in practice and some Japan competition
Hanna Yoshida, Riko Takino and Sui Takeuchi as well
Spite the triple axel being a very challenging jump, these women make it seem so flawless. 👏🏼👏🏼
5:40 ok I don’t know about you but that’s a whole MOVE right there I love it
Thought i was the only one
2022. Miss her on ice so much. Mao Asada supremacy.
Mao's triple axel is just beautiful and elegant. Hands down to the Queen Ito tho
and now young you does it in competition, we have another incredible lady to add to the official roster!
Tonya Harding:
• First American woman to land a triple axel in competition.
В номинации самый лучший тройной аксель побеждает... Алена Косторная!!!!
Aleona Kostornaya the best!!!!
i dont know much qbout fugure skating but midoris are amazinggg, she goes so high up and travels
英語のコメント何が書いてあるか分からんけど
ミドリとかマオとか名前が出てる。
何かそれだけで嬉しい
Mao Asada’s 3A are solid, strong and beautiful! The strength, height are sensational! Love her so much!
Midori and Mao Asada the best
伊藤みどりさんが一番高く飛んでる
6:13 Holy cow, Maria Butyrskaya actually landed one backwards!
