Playing a steady bass line while improvising. 🤯 So glad my dad took me to see Joey play in the late nineties when I was just a teen. RIP, Joey. What a talent.
Besides having total mastery of his instrument and a deep grasp of music theory, Joey DeFrancesco had an innate ability to 'swing his ass off'. That's why all his performances are filled with such joy. I can't believe he's gone. RIP maestro perfetto.
Joey just the greatest living organist for this type of music. There were many others that are now gone, but thankfully Booker T. Jones is still with us. Long live the mighty Hammond Organ!!! Thanks for posting.
saw Joey live with the Great Jimmy Smith. A small club in L.A. Joey was groovin' away as I watched and drummed on my seat, unseen Jimmy entered the room and stood behind me and placed his hands on my shoulders! I slowly stood and hugged him. Add that to meeting James Brown, seeing and meeting Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald as they sang and played in my neighbor's living room, I had a few great experiences as a kid.
Wow what a storyl And for me? I had tickets for the Jimmy Joey show at Oakland Yoshis but Jimmy passed a week or so before the gig. I HAVE RAIN CHECK TICKETS IN HEAVEN TO SEE THEM PLAY SOME DAY.........
Joey was an incurable talent and a perfect gentleman as is Frank Vignola. I had occasion to meet both and both were most gracious and supportive. The world could use more of their kind. Joey will be missed.
Out of all of the videos on TH-cam this is the one I have seen the most. I have viewed this hundreds maybe 1000 times. Joey is one of my favorite musicians of all time. May he rest in peace
I'm actually a really good Hammond player ... but it blows my mind every time how guys/gals can play pedals AND all that other sh*t at the same time!!! I confess, at present, I can't do it. Joey is (was) definitely one of the best. Shame he passed, yes, but look at the incredible catalog he left behind. What more could an artist or his fans desire. R.I.P. Joey DeFrancesco. One of my inspirations to be sure.
Ive been drinking a beer and smoking a joint listening this song every Friday for the lasts two months, every time the same feeling. Mellow moon jazz madness, great upload.
The best Jazz organ player has left the building - what shocking and sad news! To me, he was Jimmy Smith's successor and he did him proud for sure! He could not only easiliy compete with the very best organ players in the world on a technical level but he had an amazing feel for melody. Most importantly, he was entertaining and a joy to watch besides what he played. He is terribly missed, what a huge loss, especially for us Hammond organ enthusiasts! I'm gutted ...

This is such a Count Basie thing they are doing here. Start small..creeping. Making the listener lean in. And then WHACK! they blow you outta the room. And bring it right back down like nothing. Love it
I could not agree more. Frank's playing is so minimalistic and beautiful. Plenty of space and just groovin' ala Tiny Grimes. I wish more people understood that aesthetic. Music after all is the art of manipulating silence.
