Wow! Watching this, I know how blessed I am. I sang with Lonnie for 10 years, recorded my second CD with him on the first three tunes. I also sand with organists Shirley Scott, Jeff Palmer, Richard "Groove" Holmes, John Patton and Eddie Crechetti. I love this instrument and the people who play it. I am blessed, blessed and grateful to have known these wonderful musicians.
God bless you. Dr Lonnie was an incredible musician and I will never forget being able to meet him in London not so long ago. His passing was a sad day but his legacy will live forever.
The Hammond B3 will be with me till I die. This took me back to the days when I was a kid watching my next door neighbor Mr. Paste play his. In Church I could wait for that box to start spinning wow they were great. We need more somebody please bring it back. That was great

Paul is a very versatile player. He had to back up a wide variety of musical guests on the Letterman Show and do it with enthusiasm. He is comfortable playing many different styles of music and he has dedicated himself to his craft.
This is excellent all over. Whatever you think of Paul what a gesture to turn his own induction into a tribute to the Hammond organ players and the wonderful tradition and music it has produced. How about that brass section though, especially at the end! Outstanding musicians

Doug Riley may have been a talented keys man but he wasn't one of the best (he passed a way a while ago). I'm not from Canada so I don't know a lot about this Shafer guy but I seem to remember reading once that Riley was a close friend of his and so I guess he was being bias in selecting him (and I suppose they wanted a Canadian). Dennerlein is top class, no doubt about it.
Barbara Dennerlein? Why would they want her? This isn't the best players in the world, this just Canada... And a screaming bald idiot. If barbara would have been there, pauls mouth would have been agape with no sound coming out. She would smoke these fools.

For all those complaining about Paul, remember all those guys turned up to play with him and for him and he held his own. He's not always to my taste, but you can't argue with his enthusiasm.

What he played was relatively simple but effective. He was the last one and so he created a climax by using simple lines and chords with the 'full' all-drawbars-out sound. He showed another aspect of the Hammond sound and used some techniques that the others did not. He's aware that he's playing for people who may not appreciate the instrument, not for Hammond players. I really don't see what "sucks" about his solo, even though it wasn't as melodically/harmonically sophisticated as the others.
I agree with you. Did anyone ever consider this may have gone off without a rehersal, which would dictate it be directed on the fly, which is what Paul's good at ever since Saturday Night Live. By the look on his face after he cut the song, he looks like he was surprised it played so well. And he's probably right in that, you and I may never see this happen again. 4 Hammonds and 4 masters behind them. Love this vid.
Personally I loved his performance, including his energy and enthusiasm. I say learn to relax and enjoy what comes your way, and this was fairly special IMO
This is freaking incredible B3 mastery, holy moley Dr Lonnie is a BEAST, they all are really excellent organ players, wicked choice of music on a sick Jimmy Smith jam, kids need to go back to their Facebooks and their Lil Wayne music and let the adults enjoy real music like this. :)

Honestly, I was surprised, but I liked Paul Shaffer's solo/playing style the best. My son just got a Hammond and I've been listening to some stuff online. It's a crazy, busy instrument. I haven't seen one player who didn't play it as if they were holding back a seizure. Some mad music making!

I guess it was the very early 1980's in Toronto, there was a period when the still under development Harbourfront complex had free 'after hours' music in what was essentially a small temporary room, The floors were bare, the tables and chairs the cheap plastic and metal tubing kind meant for patios, and the refreshments were really minimal. But I would wait for my parents to get home from their night out with friends so I could take the car and drive 12 miles from the 'burbs down to the lakeshore. It was may be midnight before I'd get there. The musicians were the various notables that had done their individual gigs at the clubs and came to jam. Ed Bickert, Don Thompson, Rob McConnell, Guido Basso (maybe?), and I think Doug Riley and Moe Koffman. Musicians of that ilk. The sun would be coming up when things fizzled out. Free. Great times.
+Gary Jones well Hammond made probably over 100,000 B3s over 20 years. the one Paul is playing isn't actually a B3, but a BC cabinet with A100 guts in it (a "counterfeit B3.")

Hammond originally intended for the A to be a home organ, and the B to be used in churches to replace a pipe organ. The B was never intended to be a rock or jazz instrument. It took a few geniuses like Jimmy Smith and Booker T. to bring out its potential, especially when configured with a Leslie speaker.

Have been watching some Lachy Doley lately and he’s a wild Hammond player. A lot of people call his Hammond a B3. But I think it’s actually a CV from what I see in the videos. The old CV had a different more biting sound. I remember hearing way back when that Keith Emerson had a 1948 CV for recording because he liked the sound. Don’t know if that’s true but it’s also interesting that 1948 was the first year that Hammond changed to a single tone generator and chorus vibrato. Prior to that they had two generators and a different vibrato. Anyway, Hammond regardless of the model is in a league of its own.
Very exciting! All of these guys just doin' it ... , very exciting. Loved all that I heard from each of them. I do have to acknowledge Joey since he's truly "mio Paesano", being from my hometown (Philly). Still, loved hearing from and appreciate all of them for what they brought to the presentation.

That's what Paul was able to do by hyping and conducting it all the way through. It would have been a very different performance without him creating that excitement. Trust me, I know, I do it every year. I'm the Musical Director/Bass player for the show.
100% of what you say is absolutely on the mark. I've played over 6,000 gigs in my extremely fortunate musical life. Paul's enthusiasm added immensely to the experience for the audience. To me, the greatest thing about Paul's enthusiasm is that it lets you have a peek into what it feels like to be a musician. When I'm playing my guitar, especially with a great lineup of musicians, I hear all the yelling and screaming in my head that Paul was letting out. I absolutely know without question that performing great music to a live audience can be the greatest human experience. There is joy so powerful and deep in the human soul that it seems only music can express it. I wish every human had that feeling at least once in their lifetime so you could understand. I believe that if every human had that feeling just once, the world would be a much better place. That is what Paul Shaffer stands for in all he does. Deep, profound love of life.
zzzut Well then you're not part of that majority. The fact is most people, on canadian television and elsewhere, couldn't tell the difference between a Hammond and an accordion. That's why you need showmanship, to get people excited about topics they're not versed on. He's not doing it for you but for the countless other people watching.

Been introduce to hammond but with a narrow band /interpret repertoire ,mostly 70's rock n prog rock . I can't be thankfull enought to have found these four master's of it.
Notice Joey is the only player whose left hand is not touching the keyboard. Why? Because there's a full band behind him and he's leaving room/showing respect for the other musicians. RIP brother

I agree. These guys are the last of a breed of musicians that made the Hammond B-3 a household name. R.I.P. Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, and Groove Holmes. I for one am grateful for the opportunity to listen to all of them.
I understand what you're saying, but you're thinking like a musician. This wasn't a concert. He was being awarded for his overall achievements as a Canadian artist and decided to show the audience what the Hammond is about. The oranges did their job, so I don't think there's anything wrong with him playing more for the audience than for us jazz players/aficionados. I can appreciate the purpose of it by simply reflecting back to what got me into jazz as a young teenager in the first place.
Respect to all of them, but this sounded like a contest, in which all failed, great players, but it was not good for the ears, or at least my ears. Just my opinion.
To me it always felt as if it were three great organists bringing their own unique style to the peice. Perhaps you felt it was a competition due to the order in which they were organised from least complex riff to most complex

it's all very amazing, but the video would be way cooler without narration. Please, no narration on jazz! Narration is already bad enough at sports. By the way, narration should be abolished from sports! They should be like Tom & Jerry, w/ jazz sound track! Imagine that! So, no narration at jazz, please. it's annoying.

I could not see the labeled preset on Lonnie's organ however like you said the wooden cheeckblocks are a great indicator that the organ is from the 50's Lonnie's organ has the angular drawbars which only can be from '69 -'75.
You cant have it all. The video was shot really well. Those birds eye views of the organas were really cool. The band sounded fantastic. Not everybody can be humble, esspecially those who's regular job is on prime-time network tv.
Here's the deal. After all the inventions the Wurlitzer the Rhodes the DX7 the M1 the motif the B3 is still the greatest keyboard in the world.
It's a close second to the Wurlitzer 200.

There are certain techniques played on a Hammond that other keyboards and clones are incapable of.

That's what Paul was able to do by hyping and conducting it all the way through. It would have been a very different performance without him creating that excitement. Trust me, I know, I do it every year. I'm the Musical Director/Bass player for the show.
100% of what you say is absolutely on the mark. I've played over 6,000 gigs in my extremely fortunate musical life. Paul's enthusiasm added immensely to the experience for the audience. To me, the greatest thing about Paul's enthusiasm is that it lets you have a peek into what it feels like to be a musician. When I'm playing my guitar, especially with a great lineup of musicians, I hear all the yelling and screaming in my head that Paul was letting out. I absolutely know without question that performing great music to a live audience can be the greatest human experience. There is joy so powerful and deep in the human soul that it seems only music can express it. I wish every human had that feeling at least once in their lifetime so you could understand. I believe that if every human had that feeling just once, the world would be a much better place. That is what Paul Shaffer stands for in all he does. Deep, profound love of life.
+MenwithHill I couldn't care less about Shaffer's enthusiasm. The MUSIC and the PERFORMANCE caused the excitement not Shaffer's loud mouth.
zzzut Well then you're not part of that majority. The fact is most people, on canadian television and elsewhere, couldn't tell the difference between a Hammond and an accordion. That's why you need showmanship, to get people excited about topics they're not versed on. He's not doing it for you but for the countless other people watching.

Been introduce to hammond but with a narrow band /interpret repertoire ,mostly 70's rock n prog rock . I can't be thankfull enought to have found these four master's of it.

I agree. These guys are the last of a breed of musicians that made the Hammond B-3 a household name. R.I.P. Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, and Groove Holmes. I for one am grateful for the opportunity to listen to all of them.

I understand what you're saying, but you're thinking like a musician. This wasn't a concert. He was being awarded for his overall achievements as a Canadian artist and decided to show the audience what the Hammond is about. The oranges did their job, so I don't think there's anything wrong with him playing more for the audience than for us jazz players/aficionados. I can appreciate the purpose of it by simply reflecting back to what got me into jazz as a young teenager in the first place.
for most shows like this, an intro is a good way to introduce the folks on stage
Respect to all of them, but this sounded like a contest, in which all failed, great players, but it was not good for the ears, or at least my ears. Just my opinion.

To me it always felt as if it were three great organists bringing their own unique style to the peice. Perhaps you felt it was a competition due to the order in which they were organised from least complex riff to most complex

it's all very amazing, but the video would be way cooler without narration. Please, no narration on jazz! Narration is already bad enough at sports. By the way, narration should be abolished from sports! They should be like Tom & Jerry, w/ jazz sound track! Imagine that! So, no narration at jazz, please. it's annoying.

Man, I think you are so right about the gospel organists. Even some of the riffs you hear them play in the background behind preachers sometimes is really amazing.

I could not see the labeled preset on Lonnie's organ however like you said the wooden cheeckblocks are a great indicator that the organ is from the 50's Lonnie's organ has the angular drawbars which only can be from '69 -'75.

You cant have it all. The video was shot really well. Those birds eye views of the organas were really cool. The band sounded fantastic. Not everybody can be humble, esspecially those who's regular job is on prime-time network tv.
