I love how it looks like Matthew doesn’t know what to do with his hands during corner of the sky. When I first saw him perform the song, I honestly thought, “what the hell, this guy can sing but he doesn’t look at all natural on stage” But now that I’ve seen him act in the show and have seen a couple of his interviews and have essentially fallen in love with him, i strangely see it as adorable
@@Marcel_Audubon while the players are acrobatic and know exactly what to do with their bodies, pippin doesn't, and that's the whole point of songs like War Is A Science and On The Right Track, and his awkward movements -- he's not a natural!
Among the cast, the absolute stand outs for me were Patina Miller, Andrea Martin, and Terrence Mann. I come from a little island in the South Pacific, but am in New York quite regularly to see shows. And, I was choosing between Newsies and Pippin. I'm so glad I chose Pippin. It was masterful in every way. And just the chance to see 4 Tony nominated actors. RUN and BUY tickets now.
I saw PIPPIN two weeks ago. Arranged to take 11 friends on April 13th & 11 more on the 20th. It was THAT FABULOUS. Patina Miller...there are no words (she IS ART).
I saw pippin for my birthday a few weeks ago and WOW!! It was by far the best broadway play I have seen! I highly recommend it! And Mathew James Thomas came out into the audience and blew me a kiss! SWOON;)
I'm going to have to disagree with you there, as would most people I think.. Usher? An RnB singer? He would be completely unsuited for this role, and to hire him based solely on the fact that he is Ben Vereen's godson would be a gross act of nepotism. Personally, I think that going with Patina brings the production to a new level and brings in all kinds of new layers and nuances. Plus she's actually a Broadway performer - hiring people just for their name or connections is so wrong.
Before COVID I was involved with a local community theater production of "PIPPIN". We had done months of rehearsals and choreography, and then set building and costuming. Tickets went on sale. Tech Week was complete...and then...and THEN...AND GENTLEMEN AND THEN...COVID SHUT DOWN THE WORLD AND THE THEATER AND IT WAS CALLED OFF 48 hours before opening night.
I performed trombone in the pit of my high school production. I live in New Jersey. Had it known it was going on back in 2013, I totally would have gone. At least there is a really great recording with the new cast, whom I actually like even better.
I wish I had liked the Pippin better--really nice voice, but modernizing the petulance made me not care very much about him. Patina Miller was extraordinary, though I still think the role works better when a male plays it. The production, as a whole, however, was jaw-dropping--Fosse and the circus, which might have been an uneasy marriage, worked brilliantly, I thought. The supporting cast is excellent, the acrobats are amazing, and the wonderful score is given a chance to sparkle.
One thing I can't stand is when the actors playing PIppin massacre Corner of the Sky using an upward vocal inflection in places and straying from how the song was originally sung, in the same way Whitney Houston massacres Do You Hear What I Hear.
Having played Leading Player in a company of Pippin leaves me wondering how this revival will work. I've seem the previews and love that Bobby's work has been revived. Chet did an amazing job of mounting the original choreography. Patina does an admirable job as a female Lead Player, but I would have loved to have seen Usher play it as he is Ben Vereen's godson and knows the Fosse style. Overall I wish this company many 'Broken Legs' (Break a leg kids...and be FIERCE!!!)
Patina Miller is pure perfection. I just love seeing her perform. She was so amazing in Pippin! I wish I could see her in it again.
I wish I could see her the first time
Patina Miller. Patina Miller. PATINA FREAKIN MILLER! ugh she is just so fabulous and talented and beautiful. i looooove her!
That rendition of "Corner of the Sky" KILLS ME. He's so good!

It totally destroys it for me.
