That's the same thing that happened to my SP Colombia. Put it on a pole and soon realized it was growing horizontally. I will replace it in a rectangular pot soon to continue to crawl
5:22 The Florida Green gets WAY bigger leaves and the leaf shape does change. How I get my leaves to mature faster is moss pole and hydroponic a mixture. ❤
Hey, Jeff - fun video! I have come to really love my rather pathetic looking Birkin, as they're now the underdogs of many planty folks! Yours is definitely not a bum plant - loads of us have the same experience! I can't believe I actually have a plant on your wishlist after living vicariously through your awesome collection! 😂 I got a very juvenile Squami from Etsy about a year ago. LOVE the fuzzy petioles! I'm hoping to propagate it this coming year to have more than a "one strander," but I will continue to love it any way it wants to be. That Summer Glory is gonna be gorgeous; recently saw a mature one here on TH-cam - think it's going to be the new "it plant" of the season. Thanks for sharing- never tire of seeing all your wonderful specimens and never stop envying your basement space, either! Don't stop being cool!😉 💚🪴👏🏽🪴💚
Hey Lisa! Guess what?! I found a squami last night while browsing my local plant shop online. I purchased it and will PU today...hopefully. We got a lot of snow last night, so hope the roads aren't too bad. Thanks for all the support!
I hadn't noticed the reddish edge of my sp.colombia! For my gloriousum(which is easily in my top 5 of all my 180 plants)I use a long rectangular pot meant for outdoor flowers. I've struggled with two different squami🙁 maybe my conditions
I like climbing plants because of the vertical element. My Birkin died and I got Red Congo instead. It's alive but not very pretty at the moment. I think it needs more humidity but I am not buying humidifier. I am looking for pretty, easy and climbing plants. I have some but they are all new and I have no idea which one is going to thrive. Again. I am not buying humidifier. They have to deal with it.
Wonderful! I recently got a squamiferum and just can’t stop watching it. The shapely leaves and hairy, fuzzy petioles made me fall in love with it. I ❤ philodendrons! I’ve done the creeping propagation successfully with a pothos, and will now try it with one of my phillys. Thanks for the interesting video!🪴
I got it for $12 at a local plant shop during their Black Friday sale. I like to buy small and watch them grow. It’s already given me 2 beautiful glossy leaves. It’s small, but adorable!
I so highly recommend the philodendron squamiferum! I got one on November 1st and as of today the 15th of December it's working on its fourth New Leaf! A small piece broke off while repotting and it's first new Leaf is unfurling and it's pushing out a second right behind it while still rooting!
@@EverythingPlants I'm happy to hear that! It's been so much faster growing than I ever thought and my winter conditions are not ideal. I have it on a shelf underneath an ordinary hardware store LED strip and it's quickly outgrowing at space. FYI there are unfortunately very few videos on TH-cam about philodendron squamiferum so I'd love to see your experience with it!
Used to have a Burle Marx. But oh man it is wild! Always at least 10 growth points a time. Was afraid it might take over my whole house hahaha! Kidding kidding. But seriously, it was growing so much it blocked many of my other plants. Had to let it go due to space constraint. That propagation method you mentioned, Onlyplants did it successfully. Was such a smart idea! I wanted to but eventually got a super long planter to let it crawl as much as it wants haha And that Summer Glory! It just got onto my wish list a few days back. It's like a crawler, but it grows upwards with very very tight internodes. Super cool. Sadly can't be found locally 😭
I love philodendrons (and pothos) 🥰 the original loves of plant people. I have a nice little collection. I don’t prefer the ones that get non-round leaves or super big leaves (I mean, they all get pretty dang big leaves under the right circumstances). BUT I did order a golden dragon recently :3 can’t wait for it to arrive! You got a Florida green for 5$?!?! What a steal! They’re hot stuff right now. It went to the right home :)
I havent seen any florida of any kind in my local nurseries but there is a local lady that imports. I got a florida green and peru for 5 bucks each from her. She has a few "off the beaten path" varieties she is currently propagating that I cant wait to get my hands on as well!
I have a gloriosum and it was the first plant I bought when I got into actually collecting plants and sourcing more uncommon ones(meaning ones i cant find around my area). I have a squamiforum as well and I love the petioles on it. I got it from little big plant company 😄
Awww, I liked your Birkin! It's a bit wild, but looks really healthy and great coloring on the leaves. My little birkin took forever to get a new leaf and then I thought it was going to revert, but then it threw a second leaf just a day or two later and that one has a lot more white. Funny how little things like leaf coloring can make a person happy, lol. :)
Great video! Now I need a crawling philo! I got the Fuzzy Petiole this month and it seems to acclimate very nicely to my household humidity. The Summer Glory seems interesting, too. I have seen some more mature ones on TH-cam and they look so cool.
Hi Jeff! Beautiful picks....love the red edge on the silver one! I would add that to my collection for sure! I love the plowmanii reg version too! I kick myself for getting the plowmanii citrus! Reg version seems to draw me in more! Good news I have seen it for $20 so next spring I will get one! I love all gloriosums too! And hybrids crossed with them :) I have a regular one and a zebra one....the dark form I would get for sure! The Zebra seems to be fast and strong! I do have the summer glory and love it...also a fast grower! I will google the mature version....your birkin looks nice to me....keep giving it time :)...also got the florida green...and want a squami too! Never found one local yet ....and would like a dean mcdowell next spring! It is crossed with gloriosum too...Do you have that one! We are in a blizzard here in MN....love relaxing snow days...thanks for the nice videos....
Love this! Since you are becoming a fan of petioles that is another difference between the regular form gloriosum and the dark form gloriosum. Regular forms petioles should be d-shaped and the dark form should be round that's what I found out doing some research! You are right though sometimes trying to find information is tough
I love the Florida green with its beautiful leaves 😍 the crawling philodendrons would not be a plant that I personally would like, as they take a lot of space up !
Hi Jeff, great video , a couple of questions .. how many plants would you have in total ? And is your partner as keen on them as what you are.? You have a lot of amazing specimens that you’ve shown over time. Wonderful to see them 😃😃🎄
Hey Margaret. I haven't counted in a long time and I probably have a couple hundred throughout the house. My wife used to say I have TOO MANY plants, but I haven't heard that in a long time. She tolerates them haha. I think once spring comes I'll just be placing a bunch of plants outside for people to come and take. I need to purge a bit.
@@EverythingPlants thanks for the reply Jeff . A couple of years ago I felt overwhelmed by the number of succs I had which was around a few hundred , so I did a big purge. Now I’m very very selective with what I buy and not too often. My husband just tells people I have plants everywhere and he will put his opinion forward if he sees a succ I should buy. Even turning the disused 12x6 foot chook run into a hot house cladding it with polycarbonate sheeting mainly so they are protected in winter and also somewhere to house them . I've been wanting a squamiferum as well. I keep hoping to find one in the big box store since it's a costa farms trending tropicals. Maybe this spring🤞
I think as it matures it gets the ripples. I know there are lots of information out there saying that some plants sold as a deliciosa when in fact it's a borsigiana. This type doesn't get ripples apparently
I've seen other youtubers have great success with their Florida Greens. They can get much, much bigger leaves if it has a moss pole where it can grow roots in the pole. Question? Do you have a philo moonlight? It's a great yellow and I don't think I've seen you mention one. If you don't have one ....get one, you'll like it.
First a quick comment on Birkin. A lot of people find them to be a bit of a pain and reading through previous comments, it looks like there are viewers who have one that they think don't look as nice as yours does. Add me to that list! LOL In my case, it has been needing a larger pot for some time and I just haven't gotten to it. Maybe then it will improve. My other comment is on Phildendron squamiferum. They have the coolest petioles!!! I wanted one until I saw how huge they are and I just don't have the space. There were several at my local Rona and I was a bit overwhelmed by their size and the 70 dollar price tag. As I said to my plant friends, I guess it just wasn't meant to be my plant. But I hope you do get one if you want one--do a video on it and I will enjoy yours vicariously. heheheh
70 bucks is pretty steep and I'm surprised with that kind of price at Rona. Rona is the only big box store that has great plants. Thanks again for the comment Rob.
@@EverythingPlants, well they were really large plants--at least a dozen leaves on each, I'd say and sprawling all over. It would have been a challenge to get it in the car.
I have mystery philodendron from Home Depot. It's called "Assorted Foliage." Why is it so difficult to put a sticker with a name. Now I can't figure out what it's going to become when the leafs mature. Is it Horse head? Is it Florida? It has this cluster look like Burle Marx but with long sharp leaves. I got one but it's quite difficult to figure out what it is.
