      @@bliglum The Oculus Quest is shaping up to be an amazing system. It looks like it will have fantastic games, it will play very well, and it will revolutionize the industry.
      Just don't try to claim it is something it is not.
      What he asked for was the *same* strength in graphics and power. Oculus Quest runs on a 2 generation outdated mobile processor and it shows with many of the games, PC VR runs on high end dedicated graphics hardware not limited by small size, heat or energy consumption which can outdo said processor by thousands of times if pushed to its max. A lot of current VR titles don't really punish the PC hardware but in the future the Quest won't be able to keep up with certain high end titles. Stormland and Asgard's Wrath, 2 Rift S launch titles, come to mind immediately for example. There's also a huge space limitation given the Quest's absolutely tiny storage space, if we start to see bigger, more "full" experiences which closely mirror flat/pancake games, the Quest won't keep up or run these games nearly as effectively.
      All you will do by trying to tell people the Quest is way *more* than it is in reality is hurt the product.

      By all means, keep your original Rift. I didn't say anything about getting rid of your Rift. I didn't say anything about tracking, either.
      My point was that having no built-in headphones doesn't really matter, because for the best sound you want to use intra-aural earphones. That's the only way to get the full spectrum of sound, including low bass. They also isolate outside noise, just like earplugs, which is important for VR.

      It's a device that is changing based on the info they've gained from selling to users (and not selling) and manufacturing products. They realized that OLEDs may be a little better, but not good enough to cost so much more. They realized outside in tracking was a little bit better, but not good enough to add so much cost and require people to setup beacons and use 3 extra USB hubs. They realized that 90Hz was a little bit better, but not good enough to require Rift S users to have higher recommended specs and split an already small user base. In return, they get to offer higher resolution to the same user base, a more comfortable halo strap, and they can probably start to make a profit off of their sales. You can bet they were selling it at a loss since day 1. This makes a ton of sense from their end, we just have to be glad they're not abandoning consumer PC VR, like everyone else (WMR won't see many more updates and they've shifted to Hololens for enterprise, Vive has moved to enterprise prices as well with Vive Pro Eye etc).

Now Skyrim Vr doesn't look great out of the box but you can get a lot of free graphics mods that will work in Vr and it looks stunning. I wouldn't pay 60$ for Skyrim Vr but if you're lucky like I was you may be able to snag a steam key for around 30-35$ from g2a or it might go on sale on steam. I prefered the headphones from the original rift as well, the go sounds great for smaller videos, but playing music left a lot to be desired. Also I really am dissapointed in them for giving a danm about the game link type c connector. This really could bring the technology forward, but they have to keep... this. I'm interested how the 80 Hz will feel. The 72 Hz from the go felt strange already. The rift s basicly looks like a wmr headset, sorry. Out of all options including wmr, vive etc I still prefer the original rift. With respect, you are not fully educated on this subject. There is no ability to adjust the separation of the lenses. This is entirely different from the separation of rendered images, and cannot be compensated for in software. If it could, it would have been done that way from the beginning instead of wasting money on a "useless" HW feature.
      This was done in order to save money, and means that only a small percentage of people will get the maximum FOV and minimum distortion--the ones whose IPD happen to align more or less perfectly with the offset of the lenses.

      @@thehumblewolf WMR = Windows Mixed reality. It is a set of VR Headsets which run of the Windows 10 WMR API designed by Microsoft for the mid-range budget side of PCVR. Still has full functuality of steamVR and uses the power of your pc but they are a lot cheaper than the rift/vive/pimax top range HMD. The tracking and general specs are usually inferior although in cases like the odyssey+ the screen is one of the best above the top tiers. Search them up.
      Also the issue with an LCD panel is primarily the huge lack in colour quality. The normal rift and vives have OLED panels providing an almost perfect colour contrast and perfect black and whites. An LCD panel will create bluish whites and grainy blue blacks with slight colour bleed. Not great for immersion. Although the response time may be slightly better but not noticeable. I'm glad that's their focus at the moment because that's the way to grow the user base. I just won't personally be 'upgrading' (really more of a sidegrade). I'd have to try one out first before I determine which I'd prefer. Idrc about 80 hz vs 90 bcuz I've been playing modded Skyrim VR which is about 50-60 fps for me and it doesn't really bother me so that's not a big factor. from OLED to LCD kinda sucks but again I'd need to test it to see the difference. Basically, just wait until the new jump in PC VR experience is all pros and no cons before you make a decision. Unless somehow you get to try one out and realize the resolution and reduced screen door effect is totally worth it then I'd say sell the rift or find a way to trade it in for the S

      MayDay GoingDown!! Can you even get 90 FPS on xplane? I have a beast of a computer, but xplane is still running open gl from 2002. It only utilises 1 cpu core. It’s VERY poorly optimised to make use of any new hardware from the last 15 years..
      You get reasonable performance if you force 45fps and turn off Asynchronous Time warp by opening xplane.exe through oculusdebug, otherwise the ground and windows do weird shit in the sim and performance is a bit all over the place!
      The big talk around the new xplane is they are going to be running an entirely new game engine from this century! Wahoooo, but by that stage I’ll be nearly flying Fokker 100s for real so.. ehhh lol

      I'm just wondering if this new Oculas S will make it look even better due to its native higher resolution.
      The new engine is Vulkan, it will allow Xplane 11 to use Multicore CPU'S so no more using a couple of cores only.

      @ibsn87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MayDay GoingDown!! Ohhhh I have the 4770k and a 1080 also! But 45 fps is about as good as it gets. I literally would have bought the rift based on a better resolution and more clarity, but it seems it’s not worth the upgrade. I can’t believe they did away with the headphones! Such a good thing to just chuck on someone’s head to have a play!
      Regarding resolution. Zibo mod 737 is amazing but I do have to zoom to see most buttons. G1000 panels are fairly hard work too! I hop in a real plane with g1000 and it’s a breath of fresh air, hahah so easy to read and manipulate!
      I also work around the resolution by leaning way back and clicking re centre vision. And then lean forward. This momentarily has you sitting really close to everything and then when your ready to roll, click re centre vision again. It’s quick and it works.
      The market for flight aims is small. But utilising hardware would surely be beneficial for everyone! Flight sims have always always been clunky and slow even from the very first Microsoft flight simulator I can remember.
      I guess draw distances are usually crazy far unlike most games but still!

      @@maskofman7350 it's an 80hz LCD. sure, lower screen door effect. But the original rift has a diagonal screen door effect that to me gives it more of an antialiasing effect making the image look less pixelated. Which is why I prefer my oculus rift over my vive, because vive looks so pixelated in comparison. Also, people are saying the Rift S has a slightly lower FoV than the original Rift (even though oculus said 'slightly higher'). FoV is very important for immersion. This is not an upgrade.

    This seems like 2 steps forward, and 8 steps backward.
    The choices made here are absolutely baffling. I'm sure it will be a decent headset, and the drop in refresh rate shouldn't be too noticeable, but the fact that we are getting a downgrade in that department at all is just unacceptable. It's been three years, if anything that should have improved. I was really expecting something like 120 hz.
    And not having that unified USB type C connector is also confusing. If they went with Type C, it would be extremely easy and cheap to convert to USB and HDMI/DP/whatever the hell you want. They could even throw an adapter in the box. Having display port instead of HDMI on the connector is also frustrating if you have a PC with an HDMI port in the front. Manufacturers put those ports on PCs almost specifically for the Rift and now the new Rift won't work with it. I know the cable will be replaceable, but you just know it's going to be a proprietary connector like on the current Rift, so you are going to have to buy an expensive ass cable that you can only get from Facebook. Kind of a pain in the ass just for the convenience of not having to connect your new rift to the back of your PC.(although tbf you can just get an HDMI to DP adapter for like $5 on Amazon, but still it's more shit to buy).
    Oh, and then the panel in the Rift S is going to be the same as the panel in the Go??? What the fuck is that about??? Why doesn't it have the same resolution as the Quest? They're both the same price and the Rift S doesn't have any processor in it or anything! If anything it should have a higher refresh rate version of the Quest panels.
    Well, at least they made my decision of whether to get the Rift S or the Quest a whole lot easier. And the old Rift will probably be a lot cheaper now too. Look at the bright side.

    • @maskofman7350
      @maskofman7350 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @brickman409
      @brickman409 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maskofman7350
      Tbf I haven't tried the Go. I'm sure it's good, and true, it is higher resolution than the Rift. But still, it's not as good as the screen in the Quest. Considering that the Quest is the same price as the Rift S, there's no reason that the Quest should have a better screen. And there's no reason that the $400 Rift S should have the same screen as the Go which is half it's price.
      While the downgrade in refresh rate from the Rift to the Rift S may be minimal, and might not even be very noticeable, there is absolutely no reason there should be any downgrade at all. Like, that's not how technology works! Things should be getting better, not worse! Even if it is only slightly.

I have 400 bucks that I'm saving for a vacation now instead if a new VR headset or games. I'm not going to invest in very many new games either, as it feels bad to reward Oculus by buying their games. I own a Rift CV1 and I am definitely selling it and getting the Rift S. I think that the tracking method is so much better and will provide a much smoother experience. It also makes the rift a lot more portable, so if you ever have to change rooms in the house, you can easily do so. And another game changer is the pass through. I always have to take my headset off when I want to drink or see who's at my door - but now I no longer have to do that. Yes the screen may be a downgrade but reduced god rays and screen door effect as a trade off is, in my opinion, better. I do wish they kept the old audio system though because it would provide a more immersive play space but they have now put a 3.5mm jack on the headset. The band of the old rift - i'm going to be honest now, I didn't really enjoy/like because it made the headset feel very heavy on the front, which made the headset feel less comfortable for long periods of time. However the new halo band (as they are calling it) and the new (nose connection part?) block light from entering the headset, providing a more immersive play space. I have no idea why they changed the controllers but they are lighter than the OG touch controllers which may be good or bad for some people.
    Overall, I think if you have the OG Rift CV1 and you have the money, take this side-step and grab the Rift S as the tracking is better and so much smoother (I don't know why people are saying the tracking is less accurate, the only thing that *slightly* draws it back is the fact that the controllers lose tracking when behind your back for 2 seconds or longer) and the new lenses and screen make the VR experience much more immersive, as god rays and SDE are *significantly* reduced if not removed.
    If you think otherwise, please comment as I would love to hear your opinion.
