Yes! Yes to this! She was nominated for an Oscar for Hotel Rwanda in 2005 (should've been for Wild Rose in 2020 as well, btw) - if she wins those awards she'd be a Triple Crown of Acting achiever! I'd love that.
Absolutely not. It is an embarrassing representation of DID, and does not give new people to the topic an accurate depiction. Look at people like Dissociadid or MultiplicityandMe for real education, not this garbage.
I myself suffer from DID, OSDD.. How could you say that child abuse is entertaining.. To be represented like this is really embarrassing and so bad.. People who have just suffer more if others think that they are aggressive and murderers
Sophie is just a true treasure, her performance was beyond perfect, she played so many characters, no one on the Show could top her, i truly like that she would get the Attention and the appreciation that she deserves.
People keep saying she's a brilliant actor, but as an actor with a good understanding and experience with DID, to me she was terrible. You have to research what you are playing, and she kept calling alters "characters" which made me cringe so much. I cringed a lot watching this video. It's good that people have their own opinions on this and such, but she helped create a lot of stigma around DID. Most alters have a connection the host and are all alike in ways. They are not complete different "characters". I have a very good experience with this disorder and am personally dissapointed.
Unless you're watching a documentary, it's the audience's responsibility to remember not take anything and everything about what they're seeing too seriously. Fictional movies/shows are exaggerated for the sake of entertainment, their purpose is not to inform an ignorant public about mental illness. Movies/shows are not a substitution for education.
Yeah I recognized her from The Secret Life of Bees and she is a phenomenal actress brilliant performance! I enjoyed watching her onscreen, beyond talented!!
“I didn’t really research the disorder” clearly.... it was extremely upsetting to watch as I’ve been self diagnosed with OSDD for a short amount of time and her portrayal made me feel horribly about myself...it made me afraid people would think my disorder is dangerous and scary which many people think including my own family.
"Self diagnosis?" Get your ass to an actual psychiatrist instead of looking at WebMD. If they give you an on-paper diagnosis of DID, THEN you can get offended over Sophie's performance. Til' then, your "self-diagnosis" is just talk. You people who think Google equates to a psych degree make me sick.
Can’t deny Sophie’s acting was great. But, fucking horrible representation of DID. A wildly inaccurate and overplayed Hollywood horror trope of the DID villain.
I love this actress but it was a horrible shame she didn’t do any research. They are calling Dissociative Identity Disorder by it’s wrong name in this interview and the show writers should be ashamed of themselves for their lazy choice to continue perpetuating the harmful stereotypes about this disorder, instead of finding another way to move the plot along. Such a waist.
Like melancholia to depression, yes. Though I do quite concur that her portrayal was rather stereotypical of how movie industry see DID, it's much more nuanced in reality.
Sophie Okonedo is a great actress. So versatile, and just goes for it. I remember first seeing her in Aeon Flux, the scene when Charlize wraps her hands around her own hands, and she lies down.
She was great in her role! She really got me scared whenever her other personalities flourished. They were so unpredicteble and so violent. I guess that's the messure of a good actress, to give emotions to the viewer and to make your character very believable. Great job!!
The portrayal of dissociative identity disorder in a show in 2020 is shameful. The writers clearly did not research the condition, and they instead continue to perpetuate harmful stereotypes. An absolute shame. I was really enjoying the show up until this point. But I cannot support a show that harms the people I love.

she portrayed it so inaccurately. people with dissociative identity disorder (DID as it’s now known, it’s not called MPD anymore) aren’t dangerous or delusional. alters are formed during severe childhood trauma, it’s impossible to develop DID in adulthood. delusions / hallucinations also aren’t a symptom of DID. alters are real, separate states of consciousness, they’re real individual people sharing one body, they aren’t made up. they help cope with trauma. alters can also only switch out when triggered by something (positive or negative), they can’t just switch back and forth as they choose.
Yeah I would have to HEAVILY agree. I’ve seen many videos where ppl with DID have explained how most of their alters are formed from trauma, and most commonly they even have a trauma holder. And most of the alters are formed and they themselves don’t grow. So they may be six years old, 11, etc. they do not switch on command. Most of the only ways are only for example seeing the trigger, sometimes even listening to music, or they could even try to FORCE an alter to come out but that still means they dissociate so it’s not like one second theyre happy and then literally within the same sentence they start yelling shit. I do not particularly like this show but I would say that it is the directors fault of poorly portraying this. I believe the actor could be good, but shit the directors seem to know absolutely nothing.
Thank you for this perspective! I had no idea if her portrayal was accurate to the actuality of the disorder. I did enjoy her “take” on it to a certain extent.

It was written inaccurately. Do not blame the actress.
It's a great performance but it bothers me that they called it "multiple personality disorder" as the show is set in 1947 and it wasn't know as MPD until the 80s 🤔
Yeah that is a plot hole and they barely did any research on the disorder. Everything about MPD or now known as DID is either incorrect or over dramatized.
i'm sorry but i couldn't care less for how good/bad the acting was bc it was in general a very wrong representation of people with did (dissociative identity disorder) first they let the viewers believe that she developed the disorder after the trauma that happened two years ago, when she was an adult, which is not possible to happen. did is a result of severe, repetitive childhood trauma mixed with an unstable relationship to primary caregivers. it always develops during childhood. secondly it suggests (once again) that people with did are violent, uncontrollable and aggressive. which is rarely the case. most people wirh did are so used to abuse that they're much more likely to become victims again very, very rarely they become predators (but the media as in split and unfortunately ratched often tell us otherwise). thirdly she clearly suffers from hallucinations (baby tillie sees her mother on s chair) which is not a symptom of did - of course she could suffer from coexisting other mental illnesses but i think for someone who doesn't know anything about did it could suggest that hallucinations are a common symptom and again did and schizophrenia are getting confused. sorry for the rant but it just really bugged me to see this disorder being represented so, so wrong once again. especially the part where it seems like people with did are dangerous when in reality they're very hurt people who have gone through unspeakable things at a way too young age and are just in need pf safety and understanding.
Shes an incredible actress but this is a TERRIBLE portrayal of DID and I think that's really unfortunate. She should be using her talent for something that's worth it.

I think that the portrayal of her character was very well done. There’s no denying it could be fine tuned in her writing. However, I do believe the message Ratched (as a series) is trying to convey is that of which: sometimes the people who have been diagnosed are less harmful then those who haven’t (ie. Mildred, her brother etc.). It’s not necessarily a negative stereotype of D.I.D as Charlotte’s behaviours have been influenced by those in the show who are not in the hospital themselves. Like I said, it could possibly be a little fine tuned for more authenticity, that being said I do not believe there should be hate for the portrayal. If anything it was remarkable for her to show this negative progression of Charlotte’s character development due to the people around her. I hope I have not offended anyone, please reply with your thoughts as well....I’m very open :). Thanks for reading!
I think she did some amazing acting, but the writers and directors didn’t do a good job of portraying the condition (if it’s gonna be a important part of the show they should’ve done their research) I know the basics of the condition and it still felt off to me. There’s so many people with the condition on TH-cam that debunk most of the things that happened on the show (the roles the alters play, when does it form, their behavior) and there’s so little portrayal of this condition and the two most popular are violent (Split and this show) but yeah i know it’s a violent drama but non violent characters still exist that forward the plot
