Thanks Stacy! I was just wishing that you had a puppy leash training video and there it is! I always learn so much from watching your training videos, keep up the awesome job!
I just discovered you and I really enjoy learning from you! If I were to suggest an idea would be to add with the video some info on the type of leash you are using (maybe with a link to the store you use frequently) - this saves time from going back and forth to get the right detail and time when you are mentioning it.
Thank you, Stacy! We are getting a Berner puppy at Thanksgiving! I really like your positive training methods. I am wondering what happens as your puppy ages into adulthood and how you handle behavior and treats. When an adult dog is just hanging around the house are they given treats for things like "sit" and "off?" Also, if you were to take a young adult dog on a walk, would the behaviors you have worked on become "automatic" and therefore not be treated?
Great questions and hard to capture in a video :) Basic skills and routine become expected but I do periodically treat for basic behaviors to reinforce them. I do also continue to do training sessions throughout my dog's lives as I train for higher levels of obedience, rally and drafting. I treat a lot to establish a behavior and until it is super easy for them I am constantly treating them for it. On walks, because they are heavily overstimulated I actually go backward and treat more for attention to me and reinforcing not pulling for young/adolescent dogs. As they get older and can tolerate more stimulus and prove they can calmly walk I lessen the rewards, but ALWAYS still have treats on me.
Hi Stacy - do you have any leash and collar recommendations for a 3 month old BMD? I'm having trouble finding one especially since mine has lot of fluff 😅
Ugh Im so frustrated, can you do one on how to get them to even stand up? Mine just roll in the grass, flip out, chew the leash and jump all over the place
Are you working on engagement and training? If you always have yummy treats (I have string cheese most of the time) my dogs can't WAIT to be with me. I am always the most exciting thing and am positively working with them. The more you manhandle them and "make" them do things, the worse it will get. You have to find what motivates them (cheese, toy, high excited voice) and praise, dance, sing, make it fun and they will want to join you.
Hey Stacey, is there a rule of thumb that you use for number of treats per training session etc? Is over feeding your dog through treats a thing? Thanks again
Hi Stacy, How long of a walk would you take your 5 month old Berner puppy on? We don't want to overdo it, but we also want him to be out, safely socializing on the walking path. Thank you!
It really depends on the weather and terrain. They can go at their own pace and I don't force them. Many people have issues with their dogs stopping and not going, I have never experienced this. I walk 1/2 mile to a mile occasionally with my dogs, but free running and play is most important.
Thank you for the video Stacey. I am looking at the website you recommended. What size collar snd leash should we buy for a 9 week old? Should we buy couple right away?
Thank you so much Stacy! We are trying this technique with our 8 week berner and he keeps gnawing on the lease. We’re trying to redirect with treats but it’s not working. And every time we try to get it he thinks we’re playing tug of war and I don’t want to reinforce the behavior. Any advice?
I would start going outside your backyard to new places (not parks or places where other dogs are). If you are more interesting than the leash he will go with you and forget about the leash. Are you giving him things to do? Sit, down, focus on you? I would also consider letting him drag the leash in the house so he gets used to it.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade thank you so much! We upped out treat game and took your advice to focus on other training sit, etc. He’s doing better - only grabbing the lease a few times per session. Do you recommend any trainers in the Bay Area?
@@shelbychilingirian1479 It depends on your lifestyle, if you are a good fit for a large, hairy, goofy, dependent dog. They are a lot of work and can be very expensive to maintain.
Hi Stacy! i have a year old berner whose very rambunctious, the thing is, when i walk him on our land, hes okay, but when i walk him in public places, he pulls and goes insane. Is there tips on how to stop this?
Yup! You need to practice, practice practice around stimulation and other things. Walking with no stimulation vs a ton of stimulation is completely different picture for your dog. A ton of things are attracting them and they need to learn how to focus on you instead of everything else. I work on focus work in my backyard first, then add distractions in my backyard, then move to new locations for proofing.

Our Bernese is 8 months old and we are just starting to use your method. I hope it isn't too late.
It's never too late! Consistency and focus will get you there! Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion! It is from Mesamisonline.com. I love the combo lead and the limited slip collar and leash. :)
Stacy can you share the link to a good collar and leash for our new puppy. She will be coming home the end of June. Ty so much

SitStay with Stacy Slade can I get one ?

No rule of thumb, but if I am training a lot, I will scale back a bit on their meals. Some training sessions require more treats than others!
@@SitStaywithStacySlade That makes sense. Cheers Stacey
Hi Stacey- what sort of leash are you using for puppies this age? I know you like the slip knot leash for fuller size dogs.
I use a limited slip collar and leash from Mes Amis collars (mesamisonline.com)

I start with a medium and go from there. I would get a combo lead, leash and collar. You can always buy more later.

That could potentially amount to a whole lot of cheese if used for training and anything else. Point is, cheese is sooo not good for dogs!
Many many top trainers use string cheese for training. I've used it for 30+ years and have never had an issue. Why do you think it is bad for dogs?
@@SitStaywithStacySlade look it up a little cheese is good but feeding them a lot leads to weight gain 👀
