I'm strugging to transition from business/finance to IT, from choosing what area to focus, and after watching some of your videos I think I have the answer and how to start. Thank you so much.
excited to hear about your progress and journey!
What helped you decide which area to go into
Why did you decided to change?
Governance, risk, and compliance would be a good area to look at.
You need to be able to work with the business and IT. Being able to convert "we could get hacked" into financial (and other) impact's that executive management and the board understands as an example.
You need a high level conceptual understanding of the tech side as a minimum and be able to lean on others as required. You do ultimately need to have a solid technical understanding but GRC is an area you can start in from a business background.
The tips you shared are valuable and as an individual trying to develop a career in cyber security, this is of tremendously help.
Thanks again.

I’m 34, I work in technical support for a tech company. A sort of tier 2 support above the regular support where we specialise in one area. I’ve no computer science background and can’t code (I studied accounting and finance as a degree and didn’t like it which is why I’ve worked in tech support for 7 years). So I fear my background may be quite weak but I’m very interested in CS because it seems similar to some extent in how it’s chaos, and every problem can be quite different and requires troubleshooting based off your own learned knowledge. So there’s some skills there but would you think I’d be wasting my time trying to move into CS given my age and background as there is a lot of push for younger people to get into this and so a lot more competition against people who have a more computer science background. Thanks for your videos. They really are helpful!

If I am interested in cyber security which degree would you recommend and which has the highest career growth potential? Thank you for another banger video, new sub to the channel!
hey Jovani,
getting an IT Audit at an accounting firm is an excellent start!!
If you’re interested in cyber security then I see no reason for u to do either cloud or network engineering as those are different fielda on their own. Yes you will need understanding of networking and cloud to a certain extent but u dont need degrees in them
I recommend u do a masters of cyber security from WGU, that will be the best compliment to your career

I’ve watched quite a few of your videos and you often mention finding a path in cybersecurity that you enjoy, but is there an ideal path to take? To generate that well rounded experience, is there a recommendation on where to start first before working your way up or finalizing on a career path within cybersecurity?
No there is no such thing as 'ideal' path. All paths can be good, if you work hard and study and get experience. One path is not better than the other. Pick a specialty and go deep in it, that's the answer. There is no 'secret path' or secret formula, you gotta pick something and get REALLY good at it. That's all.
@@UnixGuy I wasn’t looking for some secret shortcut to success answer. A lot of jobs have career progression and sometimes it can be pretty linear. I was just curious if there was something that can be seen as either beginner friendly or foundational that can be branched out from once you find your niche. Although it sounds like as a beginner, taking the shotgun approach with applications and working with anyone that’s willing to give you a shot is the move.
@@Tyrantt__ hey mate, I think you have the right mindset and approach.
The problem with beginner without experience is that it’s challenging to get your first job, so in a sense we can’t be picky unfortunately. the best thing you can do is to build out your skills through certifications (regardless of which job you get), this way you can be ready to switch once the right opportunity come along

Little tip for peoples C.V. online
you type the C.V. you use black ink , BUT in between lines you type in White ink you type lots of words e.g. Hard Working , Loyal etc
Why you ask ? well these days companies use computers to check C.V.s , before any human sees it , now the computers will see the white words and flag you up as a good candidate and when you print it obviously the white words wont show up
The companies I worked at, we don’t use these things. Have enough experience and you won’t need those ‘hacks’

I am currently trying to get into the field of cyber security. I only have prior knowledge of C++ and a small amount of python knowledge from my Polytechnic school and it wasn't the core module since i was trained in the engineering field.
What should I learn before trying to learn more about cyber security? My knowledge in terms of programming is still not that great.
I strongly recommend you do the Google cert that I talk about in this video, watch it:

@@UnixGuy Thank you for the fast response! I was checking out your channel and I really really admire the work you are doing for people who are trying to get into the field!
I would like to express my gratitude for all the things you did for others!
Would you say it's possible to go from zero IT experience to a job in cyber security by learning online, earning certifications, doing home labs/personal projects and skipping jobs like help desk and other IT jobs just to break into cyber security?
yes absolutely!! its gona be challenging either way but its possible
Hey UnixGuy. I'm 19 years old and hoping to get started with a CyberSecurity career in the next 6-8 months. I've applied to a couple of internships this summer. One as a Pen Tester intern, Detection/Response analyst intern, and a Threat Analyst intern. I'm currently studying to get my Security+ certification first. I am currently enrolled in an Associates Degree program in CyberSecurity but I'm ready to get into the field now so I'm not certain I'll finish my degree. Any device you could give me?
Looks like you are on track if you managed to get internships - this is the hardest step.
Its up to you to continue the degree, as long as you keep your focus on gaining hands/on experience and doing more advanced certifications, so do the certs that I recommended in another video after your security+
@@UnixGuy thanks. I’ve only applied to internships I haven’t heard anything back from any of them yet but I hope to get one to launch my career.
@@ttech4313 they can definiteky make your career. Meanwhile, keep learning and studying for certs and your degree - persevere
@@UnixGuy thank you !
@@ttech4313 heya can i get your insta ?i need to ask somethings from you
do hiring managers look at bachelors degree? like does it make too much of a difference?
some do some don’t! I talked more about it in this video:

If i want to become sys admin + network eng , do they require fixing hardware things or just software and routers
If they need i dont know if this is jmy right path
I start by Comp+ tia
Network + - Ccna crrts and so on so forth until i get in.
I have knowledge in soft skills but hardware part is cant even build own pc lol
they might. this video is abour cyber security not sytem/network admin
Thanks 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Hi, i have just finished my 12th board exam i have a high interest in cyber security field i would like to know your suggestion for what should be my first step to get started in it.
Hey Narayan, if you want to go to university then choose a degree in cyber security, alternarively just follow the path I mentioned in this video
Thank you
glad you enjoyed the video Micky 🙏🏻
What do you think of schools like general assembly or flat iron? I have a 5k grant and I want to use a school that can possibly get me in some doors faster than later, I’m not taking anything away from the google course either.
never heard of those schools, but if you are in the US do a degree from WGU, otherwise follow this roadmap:

do you have specific suggestions for someone wanting to get into digital forensic investigation? for example, certs or most importantly personal projects to include on a resume? not sure where to start
I sure do:

Do you think it is possible or feasable or maybe even advisable to learn cyber security full time 5 courses a week night hours 6 pm to 10 pm while also working part time during daytime ? I am about to do so and I am thinking I maybe I could just take a student loan and concentrate solely on my cyber security degree, my program also has 2 optional internships.. If I do them it will prolong graduation time if I skip them I would be done by fall next year.
I think its very possible, you get out of it what you put into it, get it over with quickly and focus on doing those internships as they may be the most important part of it
Unfortunately all the positions i looked up in Canada want years of experience and at least a bachelors degree. Its really discouraging for wanting to learn Cybersecurity online.
yes but if you follow this video, you can start building out the ‘experience’ step by step, you got to make a start. Also, watch this video for inspiration: th-cam.com/video/sEDymfZBUFg/w-d-xo.html
@@UnixGuy thanks for the reply, I'll definitely check that out!
@@UnixGuy I'm the same age as Dan, its a sign 😅
