This is Agnetha - she was able to sing in a way that sounded like she was almost crying, a plaintive sadness. Such a great song, it was the track that turned their fortunes in the UK and many other countries by going Top 5. That melancholy piano riff, the sad pleading verses, then that swirling synth leading into the bright, light hopeful chorus followed by the darker, slightly threatening "When You're gone, How can I even try go on" (if you don't come back bad things might happen) with the heavier guitar. The second verse also has a lovely synth melody that sounds a bit like a hymn or piece of church music. Pete Townshend of The Who has said it's the best pop song ever written, Glen Matlock said it inspired The Sex pistols Pretty Vacant, it's a very admired song.
Agnetha sounds so vulnerable here same way a suffering bird twits while being held by someone's palms.I also get the same feeling while listening to her piercing delivery in another song titled 'Slipping through my fingers' from their 1981 album 'The Visitors'.BTW There's a great live version of "SOS" filmed in 1977 from the docu film ABBA THE MOVIE.It's reaaally impactful.
@@mattsnider2667 I agree with these point S.O.S. in swedish by Agnetha as solo singer in her own album of 1975 is equal of beautiful as the original "S.O.S." by ABBA I think that the solo verses are more deep and painful in swedish, but the chorus is much power in english anyway, S.O.S. is a Masterpiece in english and swedish by ABBA and by Agnetha Fältskog
hello Matt, so nice to see you with another reaction to ABBA songs I've been waiting for You (it's a little joke, because these phrase is a tittle of another ABBA song in these álbum) specialy because these is my favourite ABBA song of all times, 'The Masterpiece' for excellence between more ABBA masterpieces "S.O.S." (1975) has a story It was one of Their first recordings after the greatest success of "Waterloo" in Eurovisión, just four months later, in August 1974 But it waited almost a year for its release, in June 1975 at Sweden, September 1975 at UK and US (the next singles after Waterloo was, in these order: Ring Ring (re-entry), So long (at 1974), and "I do I do I do I do I do", and finally "S.O.S." when " "S.O.S." have your chance to be a single, it picks at #6 in U.K. and #15 in U.S. being Their second hit in both countries at the same time, and six #1 (including Germany Australia) and more Top 10 in several countries of all continents and after these, ABBA had 18 Top 10 consecutives in UK between 1975/1982, for example: Mamma Mía, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Take a chance con me, Chiquitita, The winner takes it all, Super trouper etc "S.O.S." in less than 200 seconds is a gem, a Masterpiece! The transitions from the dramatic opening (a dingy piano and a cracking voice of the blonde singerAgnetha) to a powerful rock beat with catchy pop chorus in the middle are brilliant ABBA marked an era in many ways One was the musical leadership of its beautiful and lofty female vocalists as the center of attention Another was the use of contrasts, such as sad lyrics with catchy melodies and harmonies And their recording tecnique "wall of sound" gives ABBA more powerfull ABBA, as in its time BEATLES, left an unforgettable mark on several generations It is good music that lasts and stays alive and well I return to S.O.S. it's curiosly that the tittle 'helps' ABBA to re-entry in worldwide charts and much more: is the song that gives ABBA their identity as a pop group (in own words of Björn & Benny) another curiosly These is the doble palindrome: a palindrome song (S.O.S.) by a palindrome group (ABBA) and the same song is like a Palindrome, with the same tune at the begin an at the end Thank you very much for your reaction; I hope to see you soon in next ABBA songs My best regards to You from Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷 South América

Thank you, Eduardo! That's a wonderful and supportive comment that means a lot. I really appreciate it, and you're right, I spent too long of my life not appreciating the magic of ABBA. I'm glad we're rectifying that now. :) PS, another ABBA reaction coming in the next batch. Should be up in 12-14 hours or so. Cheers!
Just realised that one of my favourite Eurovision Song Contest songs (yes, there are a couple of good ones!) employs that sudden contrast between ballad and uptempo: "Dinle". One for your queue!
Date of today In only three days your reaction to S.O.S. is the second with more views in your ABBA playlist with 29 reaction (only behind "Ring Ring", your first reaction to ABBA, more than a month ago) That is why S.O.S is loved by a lot of ABBA fans like me
Hey, Eduardo! And yes, I did notice that reaction has gotten even more attention than the other ABBA reactions, so it's clear how much people love that song. Thanks again for all the comments, I really appreciate your contributions to this journey. And another ABBA reaction coming tomorrow! :)

Great classic popsong on all aspects! This song is indeed sung by Agnetha. She can deliver an emotional storyline like the best out there. She is a soprano while Frida is mezzo soprano and together they create their famous ABBA's ' thirth voice' wich they perfected ever since. The studio engineer Michel Tretow pionered a lot in the studio to craft their sound to perfection
As a teen back in the day, I listened to my favorite radio station to hear my favorite songs. When this song came on, I remember thinking, "Who is this group? They have such a different sound!" I didn't really pay any attention to them until Dancing Queen and Knowing Me Knowing You came out. Then in the fall of 1977 when I was a freshman at Ricks College, I bought the cassette of Arrival, my very first ABBA purchase.
This one put Abba back in the UK charts for good.Since then they were having hit singles in many other countries but UK was still too fogy and rejective for Abba.As one of the guys had said 'we had to fight the devil' ."SOS" made the dj's to start demolishing the one hit wonders Eurovision winners stamp for Abba. They were here to stay after this one.
Agnethas amazing voice...out of this world! What an incredible song this is. Check out their performance on The Bandstand with Dick Clark from 1975...😍
A True wall of sound. This song sounds just as fresh no as it did back in 1974/75. Another great Full sound song they did around this time was When I kissed the Teacher.
June 27 New changes in the updated statistics of the ABBA playlist Yesterday I was talking about how “As good as new” achieved two very important marks, now it's her turn to "S.O.S." that becomes again the Third of all the musical reactions on your channel Summarizing: the complete Podium of all your musical reactions is for ABBA: Ring Ring ; As good as new; S.O.S. the Top15 of your ABBA playlist, all with more than 1500 views, looks like this: >2500 views: Ring Ring >2000 views: As good as new S.O.S. The winner takes it all Knowing me knowing you >1500 views: Eagle Thank you for the music Chiquitita When I kissed the teacher Angeleyes Lay all your love on me Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight) Move on The name of the game I've been waiting for you And within the Top10 of all your musical reactions: #1 Ring Ring #2 As good as new #3 S.O.S, #5 The winner takes it all #7 Knowing me knowing you #8 Eagle #9 Thank you for the music #10 Chiquitita (S.O.S. and The winner takes it all went up one place) And within the total of all your videos on the channel #9 RingRing #14 As good as new #17 S.O.S. #19 The winner takes it all #22 Knowing me knowing you #23 Eagle #24 Thank you for the music #25 Chiquitita (the first four named were promoted) New artists will come to your channel and perhaps the figures will change But today is ABBA's time here, and we fans are enjoying it. And we appreciate your fantastic work and constant dedication Cheers for You, dear Matt
Today March 31 marks 42 days of this reaction S.O.S. picks more than 1000 views It is the song with the most views on your ABBA playlist followed now by the newest reaction of Knowing me knowing you and Ring Ring your first reaction to ABBA making a Top10 of the ones with the most views so far: 1) S.O.S. 2) Knowing me knowing you 3) Ring Ring 4) When I kissed the teacher 5) I've been waiting for you 6) Fernando 7) Money money money 8) Dance (while the music still goes on) 9) Dancing Queen 10) Mamma Mia and a more general fact this video to "S.O.S." from ABBA it's already #11 among all your musical reactions
Ha, nice! It does make clear how much people love ABBA's music and are keen to talk about it. Also the next ABBA reaction should be up in about 6 or so hours. Cheers, Eduardo, hope you are well!
Another special comment, about the official video of "S.O.S.", it is also extraordinary ABBA was a precursor in the use of videos as the best way to promote their music and reach more places without having to make so many presentations on TV. although ABBA's first official video is with 'Waterloo" in 1974, followed by the "Ring Ring" remix (both on the same day), for April 1975 in just two days ABBA filmed four videos for the songs of their third album, the self-titled ABBA the chosen songs were: Mamma mia S.O.S. Bang a Boomerang I do I do I do I do I do (all ABBA official music videos were made by director Lasse Hallström)
the official video of "S.O.S." is very creative in its various takes: of the piano keyboard, with its introductory and final solos and its fantastic bridges, of the solos of the blonde singer Agnetha transmitting the anguish of the lyrics with her voice full of melancholy of their faces distorted by special mirrors of Them looking up, as if ABBA were at the bottom of a well asking for that S.O.S. and one more detail; these is the first official ABBA video who focus specialy in one of their members (the blonde singer Agnetha in these case) P.S.: I'm in love with Agnetha from my younger ages (I'm 65 now, and She is in her 72) although I think that Frida is more beautiful
Agnetha sang lead here. She's soprano and Ani-Frid is mezzo soprano. The previous track, Tropical Loveland is lead by Ani-Frid. You can easily distinguish their solo voices but when they sing together, it's something else!
Today March 17 marks one month (and short, only 28 days, haha) of this reaction S.O.S. It is the song with the most views on your ABBA playlist followed by your first Ring Ring reaction and the newest of I've been waiting for you, Fernando making a Top10 of the ones with the most views so far: 1) 829 S.O.S. 2) 751 Ring Ring 3) 598 I've been waiting for you 4) 568 Fernando 5) 557 Dance (while the music still goes on) 6) 539 Mamma Mia 7) 536 When I kissed the teacher 8) 510 Hey hey Helen 9) 500 Honey honey 10) 481 Hasta mañana of course everything is dynamic, it's just a photo from today and now, let me see the 38 songs on your ABBA playlist, but it serves to see how we ABBA fans participate in your channel and a more general fact this video to "S.O.S." from ABBA was the one with the most views of your musical reactions in the last month and it's already #16 among all your musical reactions just beating Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights, which is three months older I have seen that A-Ha is the one with the highest views of your musical reactions, but ABBA is already occupying an important space among all of them again, it's just data, but good data, and I like to look at this data hahaha and a more personal one, towards you I love your work, your professionalism, your musical openness, your respect for the diversity of rhythms and artists, And specifically, I really enjoy this path of yours of following ABBA's journey from its genesis, until you reach its final stop with their historic comeback album Voyage. I congratulate you for this third of the way and I wish you the best for what is to come best regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina South America
Thank you so much, Eduardo! I love all the comments and information you provide, not just for me but everyone who is sharing these journeys with me. And the support means so much. Thanks again, and I'll see for the next ABBA reaction. :)
Agree, amazing tune. I believe The Who’s Pete Townsend stated in an interview he considered SOS the best or one of the best pop tunes ever written. Agnetha really shines on lead but really all 4 are at the top of their game here. Thanks Matt, looking forward to the next one 👍
Pete has stated that he was unsuspicious of who it was when this one droped in his ears. When he got informed it's Abba it was too late (to be prejudiced) as he said.He had already been hooked. The best pop tune he had heard.
The perfect pop song. This is another one where a video reaction would have been great. Agnetha owns the camera and stage performing this live on a TV show and it is much better than the tuppeny official video.. For some reason the performance video is hard to find now with a basic search but you can get it by typing this search exactly as in quotes "ABBA - S.O.S. 1975" Hope you can react to the occasional video of ABBA. Part of the ABBA experience.
With the exception of My Love My Life, I find Agnetha's TV performances, much more emotional than the official videos. When she looks directly in the camera and sings a heartbreak lyric, it just gets me. And in that German TV performance of The day before you came. Wow! When she finally looks straight in to the camera, you can see it's all over. Both the hope of the song, but also the end of ABBA as a band.
cant wait till you get to their disco hits on Voulez-Vous. I have a remix of Kisses of Fire on my YT that i did about a year ago (called Landslide Of Emotion). Who knew swedish disco would mesh so well with breakbeats!
That is indeed Agnetha. She's a soprano, while Frida is a mezzo-soprano. Together with Mamma Mia this is the style that would prove to be very successful. Either both women harmonize throughout the song, or one of them takes the lead and the other joins in the chorus. Although these are the 'big' songs, my favorite album track is yet to come...
yeah,i like the funky jazzy air in 'Man in the middle'.Also a very good production and of a quite detailful instrumentation.Maybe not a fab tune compared to the other ones in the album but a great production for a deep cut/album filler.
Oh NO. While I hadn't heard this in a long time and liked it as a kid, it triggered what came later in 1988 and I can't get THIS out of my head. th-cam.com/video/A-dyzKKz6sM/w-d-xo.html
Strange analogy warning, but stick with me😂 ABBA songs are very similar to Steven Spielberg movies. They give the impression of being simple, light hearted fun, but there's always more going on than you consciously realise. SOS is pop perfection - but I can't explain exactly why. Same as Spielberg's Jaws. They're both examples of an artform crafted to the pinnacle. They could be done differently, but they couldn't be done any better.
I totally see that analogy! There's depth even when it feels light and fun. I've definitely picked up on that with the ABBA material I've already gone through.
Hey there! So I did shoot this video several months ago, and indeed, folks helped me understand how her name is pronounced a while back. So as the videos progress, you'll see I eventually learn how to say it (somewhat) correctly. Cheers!
@@mattsnider2667hey! I'm a new subscriber from the UK so it'll take me a while to get through your uploads but I enjoy your content very much. And such a cute (and very sleepy) cat you have!
A total sonic masterpiece.Agnetha's Swedish solo version is also great.Fantastic composition and delivery.
Oh nice! Friend of the channel Adam has made her material available to me too, so I think we'll be able to react to that eventually too.

I agree with these point
S.O.S. in swedish by Agnetha as solo singer in her own album of 1975 is equal of beautiful as the original "S.O.S." by ABBA
I think that the solo verses are more deep and painful in swedish, but the chorus is much power in english
anyway, S.O.S. is a Masterpiece
in english and swedish
by ABBA and by Agnetha Fältskog
hello Matt, so nice to see you with another reaction to ABBA songs
I've been waiting for You (it's a little joke, because these phrase is a tittle of another ABBA song in these álbum)
specialy because these is my favourite ABBA song of all times, 'The Masterpiece' for excellence between more ABBA masterpieces
"S.O.S." (1975) has a story
It was one of Their first recordings after the greatest success of "Waterloo" in Eurovisión, just four months later, in August 1974
But it waited almost a year for its release, in June 1975 at Sweden, September 1975 at UK and US
(the next singles after Waterloo was, in these order:
Ring Ring (re-entry), So long (at 1974), and "I do I do I do I do I do",
and finally "S.O.S."
when " "S.O.S." have your chance to be a single, it picks at #6 in U.K. and #15 in U.S. being Their second hit in both countries at the same time, and six #1 (including Germany Australia) and more Top 10 in several countries of all continents
and after these, ABBA had 18 Top 10 consecutives in UK between 1975/1982, for example:
Mamma Mía, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Take a chance con me, Chiquitita, The winner takes it all, Super trouper etc
"S.O.S." in less than 200 seconds is a gem, a Masterpiece!
The transitions from the dramatic opening (a dingy piano and a cracking voice of the blonde singerAgnetha) to a powerful rock beat with catchy pop chorus in the middle are brilliant
ABBA marked an era in many ways One was the musical leadership of its beautiful and lofty female vocalists as the center of attention
Another was the use of contrasts, such as sad lyrics with catchy melodies and harmonies
And their recording tecnique "wall of sound" gives ABBA more powerfull
ABBA, as in its time BEATLES, left an unforgettable mark on several generations
It is good music that lasts and stays alive and well
I return to S.O.S.
it's curiosly that the tittle 'helps' ABBA to re-entry in worldwide charts
and much more:
is the song that gives ABBA their identity as a pop group
(in own words of Björn & Benny)
another curiosly
These is the doble palindrome:
a palindrome song (S.O.S.)
by a palindrome group (ABBA)
and the same song is like a Palindrome, with the same tune at the begin an at the end
Thank you very much for your reaction; I hope to see you soon in next ABBA songs
My best regards to You from
Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷

Fantastic lead vocal by Agnetha, the sonic explosion of the chorus and keyboards made this one of their best.

New changes in the updated statistics of the ABBA playlist

And we appreciate your fantastic work and constant dedication
Cheers for You, dear Matt
My Favourite Abba Song and favourite 70's Band Agnetha was my on my wall poster in my bedroom lol.
ABBA sang this on the fifth episode of Saturday Night Live back in 1975, and it's been said that it helped get 'SOS' to #15 on the Billboard charts.
A channel with plenty of ABBA and Kate Bush. Happy days!
And Duran!
You would never know that English isn't their first language. ❤
It is remarkable how natural their English sounds!
gorgeous and heartbreaking at the same time. An internal battle sung so beautifully.

of the piano keyboard, with its introductory and final solos and its fantastic bridges,
of the solos of the blonde singer Agnetha transmitting the anguish of the lyrics with her voice full of melancholy
of their faces distorted by special mirrors
of Them looking up, as if ABBA were at the bottom of a well asking for that S.O.S.
and one more detail; these is the first official ABBA video who focus specialy in one of their members
(the blonde singer Agnetha in these case)
P.S.: I'm in love with Agnetha from my younger ages (I'm 65 now, and She is in her 72)
although I think that Frida is more beautiful
Go away Eduardo!! Do you do nothing else in your life apart from posting long winded comments on every single ABBA reaction video on TH-cam????
The song I fell in love with Agnetha 😂
Haha, I completely understand!
Pete Townshend of The Who has said that SOS by ABBA is, perhaps, the best pop song ever written. Do you agree or disagree?
Agnetha sang lead here. She's soprano and Ani-Frid is mezzo soprano. The previous track, Tropical Loveland is lead by Ani-Frid. You can easily distinguish their solo voices but when they sing together, it's something else!
Today March 17 marks one month (and short, only 28 days, haha) of this reaction
S.O.S. It is the song with the most views on your ABBA playlist
followed by your first Ring Ring reaction
and the newest of
I've been waiting for you, Fernando
making a Top10 of the ones with the most views so far:
1) 829 S.O.S.
2) 751 Ring Ring
3) 598 I've been waiting for you
4) 568 Fernando
5) 557 Dance (while the music still goes on)
6) 539 Mamma Mia
7) 536 When I kissed the teacher
8) 510 Hey hey Helen
9) 500 Honey honey
10) 481 Hasta mañana
of course everything is dynamic, it's just a photo from today and now, let me see the 38 songs on your ABBA playlist, but it serves to see how we ABBA fans participate in your channel
and a more general fact
this video to "S.O.S." from ABBA was the one with the most views of your musical reactions in the last month
and it's already #16 among all your musical reactions
just beating Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights, which is three months older
I have seen that A-Ha is the one with the highest views of your musical reactions, but ABBA is already occupying an important space among all of them
again, it's just data, but good data, and I like to look at this data hahaha
and a more personal one, towards you
I love your work, your professionalism, your musical openness,
your respect for the diversity of rhythms and artists,
And specifically, I really enjoy this path of yours of following ABBA's journey from its genesis, until you reach its final stop with their historic comeback album Voyage.
I congratulate you for this third of the way
and I wish you the best for what is to come
best regards from

South America
Hope you can react to the occasional video of ABBA.
👍
That is indeed Agnetha. She's a soprano, while Frida is a mezzo-soprano. Together with Mamma Mia this is the style that would prove to be very successful. Either both women harmonize throughout the song, or one of them takes the lead and the other joins in the chorus. Although these are the 'big' songs, my favorite album track is yet to come...
In many ways their finest song although Dancing Queen most likely is THE ultimate pop song ever.
The next is an 'interesting' track then it's all good to great from Abba forever. Imo.
yeah,i like the funky jazzy air in 'Man in the middle'.Also a very good production and of a quite detailful instrumentation.Maybe not a fab tune compared to the other ones in the album but a great production for a deep cut/album filler.
Oh NO. While I hadn't heard this in a long time and liked it as a kid, it triggered what came later in 1988 and I can't get THIS out of my head.

Yes .. There is an American Bandstand performance on youtube of this song
( lip synching but good anyway )
Strange analogy warning, but stick with me😂 ABBA songs are very similar to Steven Spielberg movies. They give the impression of being simple, light hearted fun, but there's always more going on than you consciously realise. SOS is pop perfection - but I can't explain exactly why. Same as Spielberg's Jaws. They're both examples of an artform crafted to the pinnacle. They could be done differently, but they couldn't be done any better.
I totally see that analogy! There's depth even when it feels light and fun. I've definitely picked up on that with the ABBA material I've already gone through.
Btw, with Agnetha's name is not a 'tha' at the end, more a 'ta'. Give it a try.
