In 2023 you can head down to your cinema and watch the latest attempt at a Philip Marlowe movie. This time around we have academy award winners working on and off the screen. So weird this exists.

Nice review! I watched several and yours is the best and most helpful for what to expect. 👍
That's a pretty good review. As to your question why a lot of young people went to see this one I might be able to add an ingredient to the puzzle. I'm 29 and I might fit into your young audience category. I never was really into film noire but the trailer got me hooked in. It felt like something really different compared to most other stuff coming out in theaters. I like that it's not a purely action movie, as in spectacle over substance. And this past decade or so I feel a fatigue from watching super hero and sci fi movies. If there were a lot of good fantasy/Sci fi movies out then I might not have considered looking at Marlowe. But I felt bored and wanted something different. I like the idea of a detective movie where the audience have to do their own thinking, with some action sprinkled in. And somethings I really like about this movie is the cinematography, set design and the cars. It's odd to say that it's refreshing to watch film where there's not a bunch of cgi filling up the screen. Well done cinematography is beautiful and enjoyable to look at. More enjoyable I feel than cgi, even if that is done good as well. I would be interested in watching more film noire I think so I'll keep a lookout if any more are made.
"Forget it, Marlowe, it's Chinatown." The 1930s style (art direction) was great, but this had too many Irish/English actors pretending to be Americans -- and a story that desperately wanted to be the next Chinatown but lacked that essential magic ingredient.
god it was slow and he phoned it in
I have seen all Philiup Marlow movies and will always welcome a new one, but this Jordan "Marlowe" didn't have the feeling nor the look of noir, and lacked of the bad-ass hard boiled sarcastic boy-scout personality of Marlowe. BTW, Alan Ladd never was in a Philip Marlowe movie but he was the main character in "The Blue Dahlia," written by Raymond Chandler, author of the Marlowe stories.
It isn't China Town. It wasn't bad. I don't get why they cast actors way over Marlowe's age.
$150 million on locations, $50 million on actors, $50 million on special effects....
$9 on writing...
