This was his first ever defeat and he then resolved to fully dedicate himself to nothing other than defeating Gazef. But losing to Shalltear destroyed his spirit when he came to the realization that no training could ever allow a human to get anywhere _near_ her level. The strength he had been seeking was completely out of reach because he knows that a mortal simply can never be that strong.

The magic caster also had a world class item. These are significant odds stacked against her while she had to take action in such a short time. Shalltear wasn't careless, she was just unlucky to encounter Black Scripture at such a time.

What happened was that they used one of they really strong items (World item) on her that can mind control and since it was a world item even she was affected. But right when that happened she happened to kill the controller of the spell so basically she has no master.

Thats why shaltear doesn't move and only retaliates after she is attacked. The old lady assumes such a strong creature is a targeted attack instead of a random mob since they just recently lost the whole sunlight scripture(the angel summoner army). They assume a shadow organisation was picking them off. This way, whoever commanded shaltear will be ambushed by shaltear instead if they try to retrieve her. She wanted to come back with an army but died from her injuries before she could. Shaltear will definitely wipe all of them out if no command was given and the "Downfall of king and country" would be right there next to her on the ground but since the slane group managed to retreat, a command must have successfully been given to restrain her actions.
