"Located a short drive north of Denver, Fort Collins is a vibrant town full of local eateries, pubs, boutiques, and home to Colorado State University. With 300 days of sunshine, snow-capped mountains, idyllic lakes, and clear-running rivers, it is hard to deny that people like to get outdoors here all year round." - visitfortcolli...
    In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew conducts an informal, and likely disorganized tour of the fine city of Fort Collins, Colorado. There is so much to see and do in town and beyond, visiting yourself will guarantee the best possible experience!
    Fort Collins:
    "Fort Collins is a city in northern Colorado. Its Old Town historic district has 1800s houses, a vintage trolley, specialty shops and restaurants. The Fort Collins Museum of Discovery features interactive science, history and nature exhibits, plus a digital dome theater. West of the city, trails criss-cross Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, known for the peak's distinctive Horsetooth Rock formation and Horsetooth Falls."
    More about Fort Collins, Colorado, courtesy of Wikipedia:
    "Fort Collins was founded as a military outpost of the United States Army in 1864. It succeeded a previous encampment, known as Camp Collins, on the Cache la Poudre River, near what is known today as Laporte. Camp Collins was erected during the Indian wars of the mid-1860s to protect the Overland mail route that had been recently relocated through the region. Travelers crossing the county on the Overland Trail would camp there, but a flood destroyed the camp in June 1864. Afterward, the commander of the fort wrote to the commandant of Fort Laramie in southeast Wyoming, Colonel William O. Collins, suggesting that a site several miles farther down the river would make a good location for the fort. The post was manned originally by two companies of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and never had walls."
    "Settlers began arriving in the vicinity of the fort nearly immediately. The fort was decommissioned in 1867. The original fort site is now adjacent to the present historic "Old Town" portion of the city. The first school and church opened in 1866, and the town was platted in 1867. The civilian population of Fort Collins, led by local businessman Joseph Mason, led an effort to relocate the county seat to Fort Collins from LaPorte, and they were successful in 1868."
    "The city's first population boom came in 1872, with the establishment of an agricultural colony. Hundreds of settlers arrived, developing lots just south of the original Old Town. Tension between new settlers and earlier inhabitants led to political divisions in the new town, which was incorporated in 1873. Although the Colorado Agricultural College was founded in 1870, the first classes were held in 1879." Read more about Fort Collins - en.wikipedia.o...

    2:52 Bicyclists are allowed to ride through stop signs in Colorado as of April 13th, 2022. They signed in the "Idaho stop" into law (officially known as the "Colorado Safety Stop"), which allows a bicycle to not need to come to a complete stop, assuming it's clear to go.
    It isn't just for convenience, but actually saves lives because bicyclists spend less time in intersections because of not needing to start slowly from a stopped position.

    I grew up in FC in the 50s and 60s and graduated from Poudre High School. I recognized many of the buildings and Mountain Ave which had the grass divider and old tracks. I was a great place to be as a kid. I used to ride my bike up Poudre Canyon and also Big Thompson Cyn. Looks like a really busy place now.

    That's one reason I like the 2x , I can gear down low and enjoy a cruise threw towns and historical districts. Great tour Jom.

    Hi Jom, I live in Fort Collins and was riding around in the same area as you that weekend! We got some intense short burst rain Sunday. Darn, I wish I would've ran into you! Great stuff as always.

    Awesome Jom! Fort Collins is on my bucket ride list! You should think about doing a video on best small towns for biking.

    Rail transport in this country is still operating from days gone by. A mode ripe for change. Nice work here JOM. Will you be out in SteamBoat for the SBT Gravel event on the 8/14?

    Poudre is inexplicably pronounced "Poo - Ter"

      @charliedillon1400 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's very explicable. It's French for "powder". Cache la Poudre means "powder stash". as in a place where fur traders stashed their gun powder back in the day.

    Fort turned into bike hell the last 20 years. It's a little pathetic at this point.
    What's he doing in fc for a Boulder only event. Get on 282 & look for the flat's
