The expression on MTM's face and she comprehends the irony of their situation is classic Laurie Petrie - no one could drop her mouth in shock like that.
“Salk, how did you get beer and eggs in your hair?… I was attacked by a band of bootleg chickens.” Might be my favorite joke on the show 😂😂😂 I love both the sarcasm and the image of a bunch of drunken chickens on a rampage 😂
12:17 Delivery Man: "I thought you were in the Mafia." I wonder how many young folks would understand that reference today? Being Italian and Sicilian, I've heard a great deal about La Cosa Nostra, the Mafia; (Fia Mia), which used to be called La Mano Nera, or in English, The Black Hand. There were also the infamous Sicilian Mafia trials of the early 1960s. So, the delivery man's comment would have been easily understood in the mid-1960s.
To be honest, I didn't find this episode racist or anything like that. Actually, what Rob said at the end was very thoughtful and nice! Another great episode :D
Yeah it’s one of the few shows that handles the “blackening skin” jn a far more respectful light It’s not on their face, they don’t use minstrel tropes, it’s not just there for shock value and it’s never there for a laugh like a lot of other shows that have episodes like this but with “blackface bad” as a cover up lesson. It’s weirdly nice how it came out of the 60s which was very divided on diversity. It’s nice to know there were real people back the using tv for good and to teach a lesson
The 60's was a decade of change, and yes I was there. Too many people just looking to pick apart the past. Seeing Dick Vandyke and Mary Tyler Moore was indeed fun to watch way back when this show originally came on air.
I don't know if it was common in the 60s anymore but there are many old shows (thinking about Tom and Jerry as example) where they would have used this opportunity to make racist jokes, this show didn't but used it to talk about equality instead.
Dick Van Dyke said in his book that their chemistry was so good that when he was in public with his wife, people would get mad because they thought he was cheating on Mary
That was "cloud seeding" ding -dong. You know to artificially make rain ? If you play this episode backwards you will surely find more hidden messages.
@@deerejohn7209 Yes I am aware of what cloud seeding is. its just sad, we all really knew it was going on just not the exact process, like the deadly chemicals. They knew and knew what it would do to us. There are a lot more things they know and have especially technologically advanced we have never seen. We get the 30 year ago version of everything.
@@AnjelaWestern: I do apologize. Thought you were making a blm statement. And I will surely get struck down for even implying that. Anywho, I was around in the 70's for the global cooling scare so have to take all the hype with a grain of salt. Many decades of End of the World. Sorry.
Ya know, Ritchie is the "densest" child I've ever seen.... on TV and in real life. This IS"T the the first episode where I wanted to clobber him one. I can't BELIEVE he didn't tell his father about the dye KNOWING what it did to his mother I couldn't STAND him!
There is nothing racist about this episode. In fact Karen if you had bothered to listen to Dick Van Dyke's speech at the end it is quite the opposite. Seems to me you're the type of person that looks for divisions has no understanding of nuance or worse yet willful ignorance of it all in a vain attempt to make yourself feel more important
This actually handles this in a way some poc have said is very subversive and uses the trope of “blackened skin” in a way that’s not offensive and pretty forward for the time. And yeah that sentiment isn’t said to everyone I’m sure some people are uncomfortable by the episode and that’s valid I just like how they very much taught a lesson well here
In the darkness of 2023, it's refreshing to watch simple television
Yes, indeed! No heavy handed messages, just wholesome fun.
If you look for the light you’ll find it❤
Your so right
Yes, agree
Exactly where my heart is❤
The writers of this show were absolutely brilliant and the actors knew just how to deliver their lines.
Very refreshing. I’ve watching these great episodes, and as an African American, I’ve been positively impacted and impressed with this show!
“been watching “

I'd love to know your age. Also, is this the first time you are watching these episodes?
Have you seen the one where they bring Richie home from the hospital?

Breaking Barriers. Great episode for the times back then and now.
Gotta love Ann Morgan Guilbert as Millie Helper. She always made every episode she was in, so much funnier.
I liked Robs speach that he made from the embarrassing situation.

Excellent insightful message.
Ahead of its time in a marvelous way. Miraculous to think it was aired prime time, Major network, Hallelujah!
I Love this show, I watch it every night, Love Robs brother too 😂
This is DEFIANTLY one of my fave epis. Why ???? Cuz i work for Tony Tutone.
9:58 I love this episode--as I do most of them--but when Rob comes out of the kitchen with dyed hands, I noticed his ring is perfectly clean.
Laura's too.
Metal doesn't often take dye
You've never used dye, have you? Dye won't penetrate metal.
@@l.5832That is correct. Gemstones, gold and silver cannot be dyed in the same way as organic materials.
One of the best

Well I don't consider myself a "young folk". I was born 50 years ago, but I didn't get the mafia reference. Thanks for the explanation.💜

My 25 year old son knows who/what the Mafia is.

✨️Great Episode✨️
The Black Hand was an early name for the Mafia.
11:16 Oh the look on her face!🤣
Personally, I thought the white gloves made both outfits look VERY classy.
So did I. My Mother wore gloves to Church or out to dinner.. It was popular in the 60's. She always looked so elegant in them. Had all colors.

Seeing "secret codes" where there are none.

I Actual thought these two were a married couple in real life turns out they weren't the chemistry between them was excellent
Dick Van Dyke said in his book that their chemistry was so good that when he was in public with his wife, people would get mad because they thought he was cheating on Mary

The child actor who played Ritchie is a great and gifted kid! I think he's natural born ..
