Mike & his crew turned a house into a home. And look at Anna's face at the end. In the beginning, you could see the stress in her face and at the end it was gone!
The husband loves the house in spite of the required substantial repairs. He would have had to get the price lowered by maybe at least a hundred thousand dollars to pay for the steps, rewiring, plumbing, rebuilding the basement and part of the roof. The seller probably would have waited for another family to scam instead. If a seller is that deceptive with an obviously crooked home inspector, it’s better to walk away. Such a disastrous home could have destroyed this family. They were blessed to be rescued by Holmes from a bad purchase and to have a really nice house in the end.
I would be in court with a lawyer suing the seller, the inspector, and the real estate agent for collusion, and many other life-threatening dangers that could have killed this family in so many ways. Mike has testified in court before. This could get them an almost free house after damages are paid out.

In spite of everything that is so WRONG in that house, I LOVE those Kitchen Cabinets ! I wish I had some like those in my Kitchen ! They are Beautiful !!
It was a good thing that Mike noticed a lot of things do not make sense such as front porch stairs, basement layout, roof, etc. The previous inspector ignored the dangerous stuff and should’ve been fired for putting the family in harm way. Mike, Damon and the crews worked together to make everything right and safety.

Here they hide behind all kinds of rules. and that makes me very angry sometimes. When I see how people are deliberately being tricked and charged with expenses, it's terrible.
I could not help but notice that when the blueboard was going back on there was a lot of flex in the joists. That means the trusses were not supported correctly. No railings on the stairs down to the basement are against code.

When I bought in 1996 , the inspector missed so much that I saw , biggest miss was support beams cut to run forced air heat in crawl space. Replaced those in first reno when putting a basement under house .
Surprised no Frank in this episode, would have loved to see his reaction to all the electrical issues. No handrail on the stairs to the basement though.

Another poor home owner who got the home inspector by realtor. It should be obvious that if the person who is selling you something also refers to someone for an inspection, think is there a conflict of interest between you and the guy who wants your money ASAP 😢
Why do home inspectors keep getting away with woefully wrong reports without any comeback on them, at the very least they should have been put on a list of inspector that needed more training so that they catch the big problems that leave the homebuyer with thousands of dollars of work just to make it save to be in that house

THIS is what professional work look like. There is an enormous difference between amateur and professional. When you don't have scammers that just want your money, and you have actual professionals on site, this is what work looks like on a professional level. ALWAYS make sure the company has permits & registered and every worker is licensed. If you are given a sob story about permits, RUN as fast as you can & stay away from amateurs.

This may be one of the few episodes where the garage didn't get gutted and spray foamed. That's because it didn't have bedrooms above it. The plumbing and electrical were really, really bad. They're lucky it didn't catch fire.
Having lived in a rental house where the landlord decided to badly DIY the entry steps, I encourage you, any time you see steps like this when house hunting, RUN AWAY! We saw so many corners cut by him in home maintenance and repairs, along with major issues being ignored (like the stack being partially blocked because someone had poured paint down the utility sink). If there is anything concerning or not done properly where you can see it, there will almost certainly be much more where you can't see it.
Electrical panel cannot be hidden, like in a kitchen cabinet, but a decorative cover is probably ok as you can see where the electrical panel is and it is easy to get to.
This is the thing ur going into a 30 yr + aged house so ur going to always find things that doesn't pass code. Any good contractor can go into a older home and find all kinds of things wrong

What do you do when dealing with landlords that just don't care about the condition of there buildings only the money & the government refuses to do a thing about it like enforcing the law on housing conditions, that's been a problem for so long & it's far from going away, i do what i can to help people fight against corrupt landlords but there is only so much i can do. I have seen apartments with mold & mildew, unsafe structures still being rented out, multiple unit buildings with no vapor barrier between floors, ect.
How do I get on one of these lol I bought a house with money I made overseas in Iraq and lets just say electric trips if I turn on the microwave with any other thing in the house on. Roof is leaking, electrical wires are pulling siding off of the house, outdoor furnace turned out to have a warped fire box and now I find out pipes under furnace going to house are leaking water so in other words furnace is garbage, windows are poorly placed wind the wind blows my curtains blow. And the flooring is terrible lastly when it rains the water seeps through my walls..... So would love some advice on how to proceed and before you say sell I am kinda stuck because I am into house for almost 80k so at current situation I would be lucky to get 15-20 out of it so me losing 60k really would be terrible. The VA won't help and I have reached out to veterans organizations that help veterans but no help yet so me and my 4 and 10 year old daughter are preparing for a winter with eden pure heaters.... So 700 dollar a month electric bills but I am a disabled vet and have limited mobility...
WHY do they mount the Electrical Panels '' Horizontal '' like that in Canada instead of Vertical like we do in the U.S.? 56 years in the Trade as a Licensed Journeyman Electrician in the U.S. and I have seen that any where in the U.S.!
they do it both ways in various episodes, don't know the specifics myself but it wasn't against build code (they wouldn't do it if it was) and all i can think of is that they had the wall space and it's probably a bit more convenient for the shorter electricians of the world
Canadian panels have a separate compartment for the service entrance conductors and main breaker. Branch circuits can't go through that so it can be easier to install horizontal.

People put extremely way to much faith in a home inspection. In the states mostly it’s a weekend online course to get a home inspector ‘license/cert’. You realize these people are not licensed in any trade or required to be? It’s basically a gig job, most inspections cost ( in my area) around 400-600$. Would you trust a 500$ with your financial livelihood if you knew absolutely nothing?
I am so angry for this family. I can not believe that people are so awful and defraud others like they did. Its criminal! How is this not a crime, they could have killed any one in that family
Remediating the mold then ripping off the plywood is unnecessary. No professional outside of TV would do that. For instance at my home they had to replace over 20 sheets of plywood due to mold.... every single roofing quote we got said the roofers would just throw on n95 masks, some coveralls, and rip the sheets all off. Sure enough the company we went with did just that. No risk to the guys. Anyone who didn't have PPE stood on the ground away from the action, and they even had us crank up our air cleaners in the house just for our safety. Plus scraping the mold with wire brushes in an enclosed attic? All that'll do is spread the spores.
I wondered what happened to all those houses in the development that Mike endorsed which ended up being demolished for being so horribly built. All those years of building a reputation as being an "honest builder" only to be exposed as being a fraud!! what a shame!!
No matter what the home inspector will never be held accountable for simple fact your paying im for his opinion u can’t charge someone for the opinion there should have to been in construction for some may years before even able get to be one
A real estate agent should never be allowed to recommend a home inspector, as that inspectors future, with that agent, depends on him giving a favorable report, in order to benefit the agent.

Been an inspector for 12 years. I work for the client. If the agent doesn't like what I find, I probably don't want their referrals anyway.

While I have little idea of cost in Canada, in Australia this would cost a minimum of $200K. Very labour intensive.

For the most part, nobody knows about deception until after the fact. I do believe if the buyer knew, he would indeed walk away. I know I would.

It is acceptable to use 3/8 at 24" on centre if edges are supported.

No matter what the home inspector will never be held accountable for simple fact your paying im for his opinion u can’t charge someone for the opinion there should have to been in construction for some may years before even able get to be one
A real estate agent should never be allowed to recommend a home inspector, as that inspectors future, with that agent, depends on him giving a favorable report, in order to benefit the agent.
