Capped chimneys must still allow for some ventilation otherwise the condensation has no place to go and causes damage/decay. Adding insulation to catch the condensation drips just means the insulation will become moldy.
Yeah, he's fucked
yep, i found this out did exact same thing pulled out soaked insulation and put regular mesh cap back on. inside walls got wet next to chimney and moldy
did exactly the same thing but my chimney was on outside of house and even with waterproofing sprayed on bricks whole chimney got soaking wet from rain getting in bricks and having no place to evaporate. moldy on walls against chimney.
seems like then if theres any condensation in the chimney it will be stuck there forever
Where would the condensation come from? Not saying there wouldn't be just dunno where it would come from. If chimney open, rain can get down.
Masonry chimneys draw moisture in, brick and mortar joints are porous
@@mryan4452 i did this everything got moldy water soaks through brick and cement then can't get out better to close chimney at bottom and put a ventilated cap on top
@@ranger178 thanks for letting me know good to hear from someone that actually did it. Won't put a sealed cap on mine so.
how about you add concrete on top of the metal sheet and use primer and pint and then add 100% Silicone Tropi-Cool White Roof material on top of all?
Thank you for this, it gave me some great help, I did the same to seal my two flues on an unused fire place.
How much do these pieces of sheet metal typically cost like if you went to Lowe's or Home depot? I have an unused chimney that goes down into my master bedroom but it's been boarded off. But because one of the sides is opened there's actually two openings to the chimney but one side is sealed off which looks like with cement and then the other side is opened but I constantly get whistling noises coming down into my chimney from the wind while im laying in bed I can hear it.
I mean if they're not too expensive or if there's some other like plastic there's something else I can get that may be cheaper in price that would do the job.
I thought maybe getting a piece of wood and putting over it and then put a cinder block on top I don't know if it would be possible for the cinder block to fall off. You would think it would stay.
Hi. I got a mobile home and it has a wood stove which looks sealed. Previous owner does not have info. Is this common on mobile homes. If so, why they are not in use? Thank you
How do you prevent the insulation from sliding down the hole!
I am cutting my chimney lower and capping it off could i use patio stones?
Hello,
After you cap off with the metal sheet, can you cover the whole thing with concrete and then pain it?
i did this and it turned out terrible made walls next to chimney moldy water soaks through concrete and brick gets in chimney and cant evaporate out very well needs a ventilated cap close the chimney at bottom.

I did add concrete on top of the metal sheet and use primer and pint and then add 100% Silicone Tropi-Cool White Roof material on top of all, it works good so far.
should I close off the bottom of the flue as well?
what did u end up doing?
@@mattysco my chimney is all outside and the inside fireplace was condemened. I put a cap on top and insulation + vapor barrier at the bottom. haven't had a problem but im afraid of futur water infiltration through the brick of the chimney
There's no way that holds here where I live. One hurricane and that thing would be gone.
Raccoons are gonna pry that off to a nice warm bed of insulation...
lmao
