I am replacing my old wood burning fireplace with a fake electric one. I spent at least an hour online to search for should I and how to seal off the old chimney. This is the best answer I got! Your explanation is spot-on and logical. Thank you so much!
I don't know how I ended up here, but you really know your stuff! great explanation about water, I have a piano and have to humidify, and now I understand where all the water is going. great videos!
With regards to an unused brick chimney would it be of benefit to add an exterior vent through the brick at the base of the chimney? With the desired effect of creating airflow to reduce moisture inside the chimney?
We had our chimney removed below the roof due to leaks. What is the best way to cap it off in the attic. Can I use a blanket to cover the hole with, so the cold and humidity that comes into the house from our chimney. We lived in SC. Our chimney is between to indoor walls, not on an outside wall. Total brick fireplace.
I'm in Minnesota, and totally agree with your explanation. My old house has separated fireplace and boiler flues in a single chimney. I've gone with mod-con side venting so would like to allow for the limited permeable cap at the top of the chimney such as the c-cap units common in the UK. Of course, this doesn't exist in the U.S. (at least not in MN) where we seem to engineer modifications as expensively as possible, yet are certain to fail a decade or two down the road. All the "experts" here recommend a full concrete fill in. Frustrating situation.
im in the same situation. so what did you do - seal the fireplace at the bottom and then put a permable cap at the top? how did you close out the bottom? what materials did you use?
This is going to be funny but I’m in miami Florida and I bought a house that has a brick chimney and was closed up on top and at the bottom. Now my house has a very bad smell specially in the summer due to not having ventilation. Would you recommend opening the top of the bottom?
according to what he says the top. if you open the bottom the smell will come in. cap and seal bottom, keep top open to allow air to escape. i would also insulate the bottom so u dont get condensation

I gotta do that to. I have a heatpump so i dont need the stove.
Do chimneys start 2 fall apart once you stop using them?
That is clever, just saw a workman cap one off to stop draught. He will run into problems up ahead.

Do thimble chimney plugs work properly? Particularly for 1" insulated 8 " pipe. In house block off. Total novice. Thank you.
