    This channel does bourbon right! No annoying intro music, no long unnecessary B-rolls (you know who you are), no smart ass immature banter. This is my favorite channel on the whiskey tube!

    First, you two are each great, but magical together. Trenton gets ribbed a lot, especially his tasting notes. Consider this however; they say the generation that popularized the Charcuterie tray Is the generation that grew up eating Lunchables! The kid probably represents the future of Bourbon critics! Whether it's Sweet tarts, breakfast cereal or fruit roll ups... people are going to describe flavors they know. I have huge respect for his palette. Sure, I understand Curt's tasting notes much better, but I never discount Trenton! Another excellent video.

    Thanks for doing the Michter's lineup. I haven't been down this road yet. As you said about the first one, the starting point is about $20 higher than other bourbons at it's level. They're usually harder to find in my area, so all of those factors have held me back. Whenever I get around to Michter's I'll revisit this video. Thanks!

    Always thought that Michters was a little overrated and overpriced for what it is on the core products. Simply better products out there for $50 in my opinion.
    Really tough to find the Toasted products and the 10 yr I've seen, but around $300 retail, so nope!
    Bommbergers and Schenks are extremely rare and relatively unknown around here so ????.
    Great review 👏
    I, like Trenton, had always passed on the American Whiskey, but finally grabbed one and was pleasantly surprised.

    I love these types of videos, but really all of your content. I'm pretty new to whiskey. I used to occasionally only have a scotch here and there with a cigar but never really took the time to appreciate it or the variety available. But the last two months I've been really diving into whiskey. I've gotten around to about 30 or so different ones and your videos have really helped me get an idea of what I'm walking into with some of them. Or alternatively I'll seek one out because of your feedback on it. I really appreciate it because the choices felt overwhelming and I needed a point of reference to get started. I also live fairly close to you guys so I have a good shot of finding the kind of products you find there. So thank you to the entire SLB crew. The American Whiskey has been a favourite of mine for years. (Hard to find in Canada and $93 Canadian Dollars with all of our liquor taxes). It's almost like a blend of Bourbon and Redbreast 12 or Greenspot Irish whiskey with the vanilla, caramel and shortbread notes.

    Tried the rye years ago and thought it was good. When I finally saw the bourbon locally I was excited to try but felt let down at first. Having said that, by the end of the bottle I was thoroughly won over. Little pricey but I think it is very accessible and smooth. I'd compare it to Eagle Rare but a little bit better, albeit at a higher price point.

    Michter’s Straight Bourbon is my all-time favorite daily drinker. I was in a liquor store a few years ago looking at all the Bourbons and a Woman also shopping told me to buy Michter’s because it's the best Bourbon. Boy was she right. Now I do the same and recommend Michter’s above all others as a daily sipper.

    A lot of people speculate that they source from Brown-Forman (including Fred Minnick revealing it in his book). That would explain the banana bread that Trenton got on the sour mash. I don't get it often on Micther's products, but it's there sometimes. It's "usually" there on Brown-Forman.

    I love the Sour Mash the most of the available ones. I get a decent amount of Cinnamon from it too. The bourbon is too bitter for me, especially for the price. I've never had the American Whiskey, because of the low proof, but now want to try it.

    • @slbdrinks
      @slbdrinks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you might like that one considering your palate info. Completely agree on the bourbon.

  • @scoobtoober2975

    Edit: 5 min later, just side by sided them. Mouthfeel oily coating, aroma pops (spice, damp earthy wood, char, vanilla) complex. Ritten house is floral, light spice, light vanilla, no wood. It absolutely slaps. Blind some ryes again. Obtainable ones. I'd get michters after this bottle. And this is the first pour. $42 a bottle and rittenhouse is $26.
    ===Just having the first one single barrel, it is luxurious in feel. Compared to rittenhouse, it wins. Finish is a bit bitter, flavors are huge, spice, wood dampness, vanilla carmel. Overall nice.

    Interesting to compare notes on the small batch, sipping on it tonight and was thinking xmas toffee banana on the nose, like a spicier Jack Daniels Bonded, and definitely astringent on that back palette.
    Solid whiskey but not for the $120 Australian dollarydoos we pay for it.

  • @bob___

    To me, the key thing about Michter's is that it has a barrel entry proof of 103 (51.5% abv), which seems like it is lower than even Pappy Van Winkle. So Michter's has less water added to it at bottling time, even though it's not a high proof bourbon. Even if you don't like Michter's (though most people do?), it's honest.

  • @greasyghost
    @greasyghost ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I sure wish I could get these AT Michters for those prices! These "$100 bottles" run you around $185 or so, with the mandatory regular rye or bourbon to go with. And those for $40? They charge $55 at Michters, which includes the mandatory gift bag. Around Louisville they run about $50 even w special bottles nowhere to be found.

  • @Shootsmith
    @Shootsmith ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I bought the Michter's regular Bourbon & Rye and I didn't like either on fresh crack neck pour. Young, bitter, astringent. However I came back to them later and they seem to get better after they breathe. Been hesitant to spend the big bucks on the special editions though.

    Many, many years ago when Michters was in Pennsylvania. Not far from where I live. I had visited the distillery. I had bought a bottle on the way out the door. It has been so many years ago tha at I can't remember what the proof was or if it had a particular name. As I recall it was not all that expensive. But, I thought it was the best whiskey I had ever tasted. Sadly, Michters had diappeared from Pennsylvania to who knows where. I have seen on shelves now and it is more than I wish to spend.

    Is Michters worth the money? Nope. Not in my opinion. For a beginner, I would tell them to pick up an EW 1783. It’s only $20 and it’s tasty while still being relatively low proof. To me, Michters is a brand that rides on “name value” more so than the juice that’s in the bottle. Do they have a nice variety of good products? Yes,they do. Are they overpriced? You bet they are.

      You may never be able to and it's not your fault. Pallettes are all different. I started with lower alcohol beverages, learning about beer then wine and that's easier to get the different hints out of, whiskey is a lot more challenging. You might try some more mellow and distinctive whiskies like a Woodford Double Oaked, Buffalo Trace or even a peated scotch so you can experience that smokiness. You just have to keep tasting and be patient with yourself.

    So hard to find any Michter's offerings beyond the 4 standard- Sour Mash, Rye, Bourbon and American Whiskey. Almost allocated level of scarcity

    Nice review - I have been a fan of the sour mash for a couple of years - will need to try the American Whiskey

    I was excited when I picked up a bottle of the US-1 but I had a very similar (maybe even worse) reaction to you guys. Absolutely hated it, was really upset. I didn’t touch the bottle for 3-4 months and poured a glass and all the things I hated were gone and I really loved the bottle. Might be worth trying, curious to see if others have a similar experience as me

    Been a fan of the "American" for a long time. In all honesty... never tried the others! Can be hard to find in my area, so I usually grab 2 or 3 when I do see it.

    Bomberger's also uses chinquapin oak rather than american white oak for the casks.

    10:18 today I bought a bottle of the Mitchers American whiskey and it was $49.99 is that a fair price for this whiskey in 2024?

    I really like your videos. The two of you together are great. Quick question: Does the American Whiskey have the banana note you were picking up on the others. Only asking because I can't stand banana smell or taste and don't want to spend money on something I won't drink.

    Why don't they do their limited-release ones at higher proof? I understand the "cheaper" ($45-50 ain't cheap to some) bottles for introductory, but I feel like with limited releases they should be targeting more of the whiskey enthusiasts and releasing them higher proof to amp up the flavors!

    When wild turkey 101 is $25 a bottle, is any high dollar bourbon worth the big bucks? That’s the real question 😁

  • @DeMan-1032

    Overrated??? Overpriced??? No freakin way!!! The American US1 is one of theee best bottles under $50.00 out there! Absolutely one of the best lines of Bourbon and Whiskey out there. Solid balanced full flavor great neat or fabulous in a cocktail... Hell yeah I wish it was twenty bucks just like I wish a prime rib eye was twenty bucks. I will agree on the toasted price but the American, Bourbon, Straight Rye and Sour Mash for the money are hard to beat.. I do have the 10 year which $tung a little but after the second sip I thought about all the crap I have overspent on and felt [pretty goood about this purchase..
