    One thing that gets overlooked when talking about Tatum, Brown and Smart is that outside of Steph/Klay/Draymond there isn't a group of 2 or 3 teammates that have been together as long as these guys. This is their 6th season together and in a league where players are constantly moving their longevity together gives them an advantage. Kind of reminds me how in college we see Senior lead teams take out teams full of talented freshmen.

For offensive rating they have 4 of the top 6, for net rating they have 3 of the top 5 including first and second in the league, and 3/10 for efg%. And it’s not just the same guys in all those stats, every rotational player besides luke kornet appears in at least one of those stats top 10. That might make you think Luke kornet isn’t a good player but he’s coming off the bench averaging a fg% of 71% and a block in 14 minutes per game it’s just not enough for him to qualify but he would be 4th in the league for efg%.

    I think one of the most important reasons why Celtics are as good as they are right now and it kind of is a hidden reason nobody talks about as much is how much Marcus Smart has improved as a playmaker and shot maker(especially playmaking). I remember when the Celtics said they moved him to the 2 guard position because he didn't like the responsibility of facilitating the offense and playmaking for the Celtics. He preferred to be a 3nD player at the 2 guard position. When Jaylen Brown emerged and when Kyrie came, he had to come off the bench as the energizer bunny and even though he did play well in that role, you could tell at times he wasn't as good as he thought he should have been in that role. I think Brad Stevens had a little to do with the elevation of his game, but Ime Udoka most definitely had an impact on his improvement. Once Marcus Smart was inserted back into the starting lineup role as the PG because they knew that they needed him for his defense as well as floor spacing shooting abilities, he knew that he wouldn't fit properly playing in the backcourt with the team's two star wings in Tatum and Brown. That was only because Tatum and Brown didn't know how to get other players involved in the offense which is why they struggled the first half of that season they had that championship chasing run. He was the only one that was playmaking for everyone else and when Tatum and Brown got the ball, they would go iso/my turn your turn costing them a lot of their games. When Marcus Smart called them out during the post game interview, the energy just shifted and Tatum and Brown became less selfish and him being heart and soul of that team, he was able to get those two on board. Once they got on board, his level of play shot up tremendously, and then you start to see him making crazy good magical playmaking passes racking up the assists along with scoring better on the offensive end because of his improved handling of the ball. He means so much to that team and he deserves way more credit than what he is given. I love how JT and JB compliment each other, but Marcus Smart compliments them even more. Gotta give that man his flowers 🌷💚🌷💚🌷💚🌷💚.

      So true, they played the pelicans not too long ago and in that game they went up 20 right away, let the pelicans back into the game, went up 20 again, then let it get down to single digits right for the start of the 4th, then went up 20 again and then the bench let the score get to single digits by the end of the game. But as of late it seems they are closing out games at a much more consistent level once they get up which is good to see, when they went up on the suns they just didn’t relent at all and once it got to 40 it stayed at 40 for the rest of the game.

    Not having two big men in there all the time is definitely helping Tatum, Brown, and their overall spacing. Tatum has such a greater advantage at the 4 with a wide open driving lane than he does at the 3. I'm actually worried they lose some of this magic with Robert Williams back. People talk about how their defense hasn't been as good without Williams, but it's still been 5th in the NBA over the last 15 games. That's plenty good. And the benefits of going 5-out on offense at all time outweigh any defensive loss, in my opinion.

    The biggest key is that Marcus Smart is attempting less shots on average. Mazulla seems to have the common sense of actually scheming offense around the best offensive players. The previous coaches relied too much on defense creating offense and that’s why you would often see horrible stretches of offense and inability to close games under Brad and Ime (albeit only one year).

      Smart, Brown, Tatum, Grant, Rob, Horford, White, Pritchard, Hauser and Kornet were all with the team last season. The entire coaching staff was also with the team, Udoka and Hardy are gone but the rest stayed the same with changed roles. The only new players that get regular minutes are Griffin and Brogdon.

Magic got some young talent tho n they should be able to snag at least one more lottery pick before they start to hit their stride

    The best thing to happen to the Celtics was to part ways with Kyrie. You seen the emergence of Marcus Smart. And you Taum & Brown really become "MJ/Pipp," "Shaq/Kobe," "Stock/Malone." Addition of Brogdon, Williams coming back.. Nobody stopping the Celtics.

  •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Celtics have the number 2 defensive rating on the road already. They had so many blowouts at home, that their rating does not really show how well their defense was when it mattered.

    I wish people would quit saying their defense has dropped off. It was bad to start the season. It's been very good for most of the year. If we look at the last 15 games, it's 5th in the league. And I'm sure you recorded this pod a while back but that "15th on the season overall" stat is no longer even true. It's up to 9th overall.

    literally every regular guy on the Celtics, can shoot except for ROB. Even Kornet is decent, his free throw shooting way better then rob. TBH the offense going to go down once rob is back. Man really needs to focus on his free throw shooting, and attempt some threes, and he will be an elite center.

Trust the movement of man and ball even if there's a breakdown as creative players will find space and time to find a finishing player.

    • @lepidoptery
      @lepidoptery 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, at some point, if they keep this core, they will become significantly more expensive. they kind of got lucky because tatum didn't make all-nba sooner, so he's only the normal 25% max, not the 30% baby supermax guys like luka and trae have. brown is also not on any sort of max at all, and obviously everyone else is cheaper. barely anyone will hit FA in 2023, but in 2024 jaylen brown is UFA, and in 2025 the only core guys they have under contract are robert williams and marcus smart (tatum has a player's option, he probably won't take it). so part of it just depends on how much they're willing to spend.

    Not sure if you will see this JJ but for everybody else that does. Do you guys think the Celtics have a Top 5 player in the league? I remember hearing or seeing somewhere that the teams that win the finals for the most part have to have a top 5 player in the league. History does show this as well . last year with curry, 2021 Giannis ,2020 bron/ad , 2019 kawhii.
    So I’m just curious as to if Tatum is a top 5 player in the league and if not does that diminish their chances of winning it all?

    • @markmelillo5699
      @markmelillo5699 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      he is the leading candidate for the mvp so yeah id say he is in the top 5. he gives you an efficient 30 a game with close to double digit rebounds almost 5 assists a game and he most likely makes an all nba defensive team. brown is also arguably a top 10-15 player right now as well

    • @diameadozen
      @diameadozen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Tatum is a top five he's probably not one or two but definitely top five and they have a top twenty or twenty five in jaylen Brown and top five defensive player on the team they also probably have the best six man to come off the bench and a top five shot blocker/rim protector on the team and he hasn't even played yet.
