I just discovered this video. Thank you so much for having this here. I played viola in the orchestra. So fun to see this again. Haven't seen in it in years. I was looking for a recording of Carnival of the Animals to share with my piano student who is learning an arrangement of The Swan.
My music teacher used to show us this in the mid 2000s until we were considered middle school aged. She had us take a quiz based on the songs and matching them to the animal.
No way I can avoid sharing this with my parents. They loved Gary Burghoff's work as Radar O'Reilly on MASH, and they love this music anyway, so this will be a wonderful treat for them.
Love the little jokes like that, like quoting Mozart and Rossini in “Fossils”. After listening to The Tortoise, I often load the piece in Audacity and speed it up so my students can clearly hear the Can Can. Always good for a chuckle or two when they get the joke.

The audio is beautifully done--- recording in open air is hellish. EDIT Is it possible this was all recorded in a studio with green screens, and reenacted/synched during the open air sections? It is almost impossible to capture clarity and reverberation like this outdoors. Either way, it's a clever and engaging video. Congrats to all involved!

Anyone else ever slightly bothered that Ogden Nash didn’t realize that there are no brass instruments in this collection when he wrote the Finale poem? I guess it makes for a good teachable moment.
When I was a kid my father had an LP of this with Noel Coward doing the narration of the Ogden Nash poems. I believe it may have been the first recording combining the poems with Saint-Saen's music. Anyway, no real offense to Gary Burghoff, but Coward was a much better narrator of these poems. For one thing he had a deeper, more melodious voice.
Oh, I can just imagine Coward reading this. Must have been great! But if this performance doesn't do it for you, you'll definitely want to steer clear of the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck rendition. ;-)
Who "bleeped" the poem by Ogden Nash in the "Wild Asses" movement??? Don't the folks on TH-cam know that an Ass is a Wild Donkey? nothing profane about that unless you use it toward someone, I suppose they bleep the word "Bitch" which is the formal word for a female dog, The male is technically called a "Dog". The English language folks!!
